I am passionate about tutoring because I genuinely enjoy helping others learn, grow, and achieve their goals. Seeing a student gain confidence in a topic they once found challenging is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and breaking down complex concepts into simple, understandable steps, helping students develop both their understanding and confidence.

My lessons are supportive, engaging, and tailored to each student's individual needs and learning style. I encourage students to ask questions, think independently, and learn from their mistakes in a positive environment. Whether a student needs help building strong foundations or aiming for the highest grades, I am committed to providing the guidance and encouragement they need to succeed. My aim is to make lessons engaging, effective, and focused on helping each student reach their full potential.I focus on helping students develop a deep understanding of maths and science rather than simply memorising methods. This allows them to approach challenging problems adaptively and perform effectively under timed conditions.

Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Josh. I am a fully qualified NHS doctor and Imperial College London graduate, tutoring GCSE and A-level Biology and Chemistry alongside medical school applications. Since 2020 I have taught 43 students across more than 1,500 hours, and I am also a published researcher in cardiovascular medicine, with an interest in cardiovascular prevention.

I began tutoring while studying at Imperial and have taught continuously since. When I initially applied, through trial and error, I developed study systems for improving my understanding, helping me to achieve A*A*A*A* in my A levels and 96% in AQA Chemistry. I graduated MBBS in 2025, was awarded the President's Scholarship for outstanding scholarly activity, and achieved a total of 10 distinctions across medical school exam and a First Class intercalated degree in Endocrinology. I have just completed my first year working as a doctor in the NHS.

I have worked with:
- Students starting A-level sciences and finding the jump from GCSE steeper than expected
- Students who know the content but lose marks on application and extended-response questions
- Students preparing for the UCAT
- Applicants writing personal statements and preparing for MMI and panel interviews
- Applicants without family or school experience of the medical admissions process

The joy I get from teaching does not stop at the classroom. As a doctor, I explain and simplify complex information every day, whether that is helping a patient understand their diagnosis or working through a difficult concept with a medical student on the ward. The same skill underpins both: meeting someone where they are and helping them take the next step.

I also think it is important to be honest that I am still learning. Medicine is humbling in that way. There is always something new to read, a case that surprises you, or a question from a student that makes you rethink. My favourite teacher used to say that teaching teaches the teacher, and I have found that to be true every single time.

On the medical school side, I have been involved at every stage of the process, from reviewing personal statements to coaching students through MMI and panel interviews.

Beyond one-to-one tutoring, I have worked in medical education at a wider scale. I was one of the founding Quizlet medical advisors at Imperial, creating flashcard resources that remain widely used by students today. I led the third-year lecture series for Imperial's MedEd Society, and co-authored part of the Pathology Guide, a textbook resource for fifth-year students.

Tutoring Approach:
I focus on understanding over memorisation and on building the transferable thinking that holds up under exam pressure.

My sessions follow a consistent structure. I teach through questions rather than lectures, because I want to find exactly where a student's thinking breaks down before trying to fix it. Patching the wrong gap is wasted effort.

The first half of each session is spent in conversation against the specification: probing current understanding, identifying misconceptions, and filling in foundations properly.

The second half applies that knowledge under exam conditions, working through past paper questions together on an interactive whiteboard, so students are not absorbing information passively but learning to apply it in the way that actually earns marks.

Mark schemes are part of this. A great deal of A-level science is lost not to weak understanding but to answers that do not say the thing the examiner is waiting for, and that is teachable.

The goal is for students to leave each session not just better informed, but thinking more clearly and independently. I want the improvements to outlast the tutoring.
