During the last three decades I have worked with numerous students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. Developing the ability to solve different types of questions challenging you from different angles on the same topics, is what is challenged repeatedly in SQA exams which require efficient skills in problem solving. I am currently working across a multitude of schools in the North East of England for CER education resourcing. I have also worked as a science teacher for an outstanding rated academy, where I was personally graded outstanding as a teaching professional.

Throughout my career as a KS3/KS4 science teacher, I have taught and marked material for both AQA and EdExcel exam boards, which has given me an in depth knowledge of their expectations when it comes to GCSE exam preparations.

In recent years, I have also enjoyed teaching maths to key stage 3 across a variety of schools. As there are many mathematical principles which must also be applied to the sciences, teaching mathematics has helped me to develop teaching skills in both of these areas.

Tutoring Approach:
My initial goal whilst tutoring will be to assess a pupils abilities in each aspect of the subject, before moving on to anything specific. The logic behind this method of tutoring is to fill in any small gaps in basic subject knowledge so the students have a strong foundation with which to build on. From experience, this has always helped with pupil understanding and led to much better exam outcomes.

Later in the school year we will be able to work on application of knowledge which is essential for getting levels 7,8,9 in exams. I will introduce students to a variety of exam techniques so they will be able to choose the ones that lead to their best work.

While I may not have extensive formal teaching experience, I have had the rewarding opportunity to volunteer and assist students with their schoolwork. I've always enjoyed working one-on-one with students, providing personalized support and encouragement. In English, I focus on helping students refine their own writing style, teaching them to be clear and concise while also nurturing a genuine love for the subject. For Biology, I like to break down complex concepts into simple, foundational ideas that students can build upon. This way, they gain a deep understanding from the ground up, which strengthens their overall knowledge. I don't believe mistakes are a setback-they are a part of the learning process. I encourage students to learn from them, using each challenge as an opportunity to improve and grow.

Personal Description:
A second year medic at the University of Edinburgh. I graduated with 44/45 in the IB.

I did not get where I am today by myself. I had help - friends, family, and teachers. I know how much impact a teacher can have, and I just want to help where I can.

Prior to Uni, I spent 2 years in the Army developing ,training and leading frontline soldiers. I have seen people from all walks of life and am committed to developing and teaching my students as well.

Teaching Experience:
Prior to Uni, I tutored final year IB students for a year. Prior to that, I did not have any formal teaching assignments, only teaching friends or some of my soldiers when I was serving. Despite that, I have been coaching for most of my life. Since I was 15 I have been mentoring my juniors in my extra curriculars at school, so I am well versed when it comes to different methods of mentoring.

Tutoring Approach:
I enjoy getting to know my students beyond their academic needs; building a connection and seeing that they are supported in any way that I can.

I also believe in understanding rather than memorizing, so I teach my students skills that will help them approach problems logically instead of just memorizing the textbook.

I am flexible and can tailor lesson times specific to the student.

I like to explain a topic, if a student requires. I sometimes ask student to explain a topic as this helps a lot to learn. I practice questions as students need to improve their writing skills. I take tests weekly. I enjoy teaching and want my students to enjoy it too.
