I am a recently retired teacher with over 30 years combined experience in further education, independent and maintained secondary schools. I am now based in a beautiful part of Norfolk, where I paint, give private tuition and run an art club.
My own work is based on observations of mans' intervention in the landscape. I work in oils, water colour, digital photography and print.

My first foray into teaching was in further education as a visiting lecturer in graphic design and illustration. Having started my career as a graphic designer I had, by necessity, to broaden my experience and skills into other two and three-dimensional media in order to become a successful teacher. I have taught in the UK for over 10 years and have extensive experience in teaching Art at A-level and at GCSE. I see myself as a 2D specialist as I can do a number of different techniques and have an experimental approach to teaching Art. Every project is unique and I am constantly learning. Students will need to find a topic that inspires them and do some visual research on this and I would then help the students by teaching them a range of different techniques, learning how to draw in a number of media from pencil, chalk, oil pastel, pen and ink, biro and graphite and then teach them how to paint in gouache, acrylic, watercolour and use a mixed media approach. Textiles is also a medium I would offer students and basic construction techniques. Adobe photoshop skills is also important in developing photographic images as part of the development. Classically educated to Masters level and able to utilise different mediums and techniques to produce paintings, sculptures or models.
I specialise in oil on canvas and have a style described as a mixture of Monet and Constable.
I also possess my own DIY handmade roto casting machine for producing plaster and resin models.

Painting has always been my favourite medium. Still-life, landscapes, portraits, anything. However, I have an affinity towards boats, animals, wildlife, and nature in general.

Teaching Experience:
Following experience as a substitute teacher, I have gone on to provide in person tuition to children and adults for the past few years.

Tutoring Approach:
Classically trained, I work with the student to build the foundations needed to be a great artist. This includes a hands-on approach to strengthen weaknesses and guide the student towards their end goal.
The skills I can show you are:
• Drawing fundamentals such as colour, mixing techniques, layering methods.
• Using basic shapes to break down complex subjects into simple geometric forms.
• Emphasize proportions by using guidelines and measuring techniques to help maintain accuracy.
• Train observational skills by drawing from life to develop keen visual perception and develop control over form and texture.
• Practice contour drawing to focus on capturing the outlines to build hand-eye coordination.
• Introduce light and shadow to create depth and volume.
• Understand and use perspective to add atmosphere and feeling.

Personal Description:
I am a practicing nature inspired artist and illustrator and my art is in private collections around the World. I also have licensing representation and my artwork can be found on various items including greeting cards and jigsaw puzzles.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a tutor for adult education for over 15 years working for various organisations, as well as independently as a practicing teaching artist. I have an abundance of knowledge to share and can help students to realise their creative potential. I have experience of teaching groups of students as well as 1:1. I currently run online and in person workshops exploring painting practice.

Tutoring Approach:
I have a very down to earth approach and am patient and encouraging. I have helped many students start from scratch and develop their drawing and painting skills over time. My area of expertise is in painting, in particular oils, as well as knowledge in the application of a large range of other media including watercolour, gouache, dry media and mixed media etc. I can offer tailored learning for adult learners who are new to creating art or those who wish to improve and hone their skills.
