Teaching Experience:
I am an experienced teacher with a PGCE, who has taught privately one to one for a number of years. I have primarily taught English on a one to one basis for tutees who are preparing for their GCSE and "A" level examinations, but I am also experienced in helping tutees improve their literacy skills from a young age. I take a holistic approach to the teaching of history, ensuring that the student becomes engaged within a fuller understanding of the period being studied. I've found in the past that the best approach to tutoring is to be very positive and flexible. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.

A little about me: I'm Shaun, an 24 year-old originally from Dulwich. I'm just finishing my first year of a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bath, and I have a first-class MSci in Chemistry from the University of Bristol, where I also helped lead tutorials and peer-assisted study groups. After my undergraduate degree, I worked as a Specialist Junior Chemistry Demonstrator at the University of Oxford, where I gained my AFHEA accreditation (Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy). These roles gave me solid, formal teaching experience and also helped me learn how to support neurodivergent students in a calm, friendly, anxiety-reducing way that seems to work well.

Teaching Experience:
I have extensive experience teaching A-Level Chemistry, including supporting students who haven't taken A-Level Physics or Maths and therefore find the calculation-heavy topics tough. I've been tutoring privately for around 8 years, and a lot of that has focused on building confidence with moles, equilibria, rates, thermodynamics, redox, and the general maths side of the course.

For example, one of my recent tutees - who's just about to start a paramedicine degree - initially left every maths question blank. We worked on how to break questions down: how to read them properly, pick out key information, and what to do when you feel stuck. By the end, he was attempting these questions with confidence, which made a huge difference to his grade.

Tutoring Approach:
I usually teach via Zoom or Teams using an interactive online whiteboard so we can work through problems step-by-step. If you want, I can also prepare short presentations or typed notes for specific topics. Most students find online lessons just as effective as in-person, especially for structured calculation practice. And since I'll be entering a paper-writing phase soon, in-person sessions may become possible again later next year
