I am 69 years old and retired from full time teaching in August 2014 after a teaching career of some 23 years. Since retiring I have done some part time teaching and private tuition. During the course of the last three years I have tutored some 30 students and have many written testimonials from parents regarding my tuition, you are welcome to contact current students to check the progress their child has made with my help. I am married with 3 children and live in the Chorley area. I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1979 with a degree in Construction Management and spent the first 12 years of my working life in the construction industry. I began teaching at Stockport College in 1991 and gained a P.G.C.E. in Secondary Maths shortly afterwards, I started at Oldham Sixth Form College in May 2003.

I have taught a broad range of maths courses during that time and was course leader for level 2 maths at O.S.F.C. for 8 years before retirement. I have taught G.C.S.E maths for many years and have considerable experience teaching C1, C2 C3, C4 S1, S2 and D1 as part of A' level mathematics. I am familiar with both the Edexcel and AQA GCSE and A level specifications.

I have 10 years experience of teaching and tutoring at all levels up to university (lecturer for 5 years) and have all 5 star feedback. My tutees get great results (93% As and A*s this year) and most importantly, show outstanding improvements in both understanding and confidence.

I am really passionate about science and teaching: during my academic career, I have been fortunate enough to have plenty of opportunities to combine the two at a variety of levels. I come from a very large family and have been involved in work with children from a young age - from riding instructor to homework 'buddy' and in the last 10 years tutoring and teaching. The foundation of my approach is to building confidence and enthusiasm in my pupils. I use a combination of exam questions and structured sessions. After studying a Masters degree in Mathematics at Durham University, I worked in London in High Net Worth Tax for a big four firm and my current role is within University admissions. I received A* and A grades for all modules in my high school and maintained these grades at A-level.

I am very experienced in teaching having coached volleyball for the past 6 years. Working with children from ages 10 all the way up to members of the university team. Tutored online for 4 years and tutored with Explore Learning for 1 year in person and online both. I tutored GCSE to a level maths and Physics.

Tutoring Approach:
Initial lesson for mathematics involves an assessment - this can be through a past exam paper. This allows me to determine what level the student is working at currently and also what topics need to be focused on more than others. From this I pick a topic to base the next lesson on. The lesson compromises of exam questions and taught material.

For physics I ask the student which exam board they are studying and which topic to focus on for the first session. I then plan a lesson on the topic by doing a question-answer session (It will be like recapping then topic with the student through questions used to prompt their memory). Normally questions are in flash card form. Then for the second half of the session I do exam questions from the exam board the student told me. These are topic based so each lesson will have questions focused on what was covered on the day. I send the notes from the lessons to the student as pdf files too. I write reports after I complete a lesson so parents know what the lesson covered and what to expect for upcoming sessions too. The more fluent a student becomes in answering questions- that shows progress is being made.
