Personal Description:
I am a recently retired teacher with over 30 years combined experience in further education, independent and maintained secondary schools. I am now based in a beautiful part of Norfolk, where I paint, give private tuition and run an art club.
My own work is based on observations of mans' intervention in the landscape. I work in oils, water colour, digital photography and print.
My interests in art and design are many and varied, and include, in no particular order, sculpture/ceramics (Moore, Gormley, Perry), photography (Cartier-Bresson and LaChapelle), graphic design (Brody, Bauhaus), and painting (Freud, Klimt, Giotto, Picasso).

Teaching Experience:
My first foray into teaching was in further education as a visiting lecturer in graphic design and illustration. Subsequently, I trained as a secondary school teacher and quickly became head of my first department in a boys grammar school. From there I moved into the independent sector, continuing to work successfully as head of department and head of faculty.
I have extensive experience as a senior regional moderator for GCSE examinations in art and design with a leading examinations board, being responsible for supervising the work of a team of visiting moderators in the south east of England, and for resolving disputes with schools. I do voluntary work for the National Trust, giving occasional talks to schools on symbolism in Tudor portraits.

Tutoring Approach:
Having started my career as a graphic designer I had, by necessity, to broaden my experience and skills into other two and three-dimensional media in order to become a successful teacher. My departments had outstanding results at GCSE and A-level, and many of my students went on to study at many of the principal art institutions, including Central St Martins, Chelsea, Glasgow, Edinburgh.
Teaching is about finding the unique personality of the individual and finding ways to encourage its expression. Allied to developing the imaginative and creative abilities is the need to create opportunities to build on existing technical skills and introduce new ones. The combination should be fun.

Teaching Experience:
I currently work in a secondary school in the Liverpool area and I have worked in the schools for the past 12 years teaching pupils in classes, small tuition groups and on a one to one basis.

Personal Description:
My aim is to help each student reach their potential through individually tailored lessons designed to make learning enjoyable. I have a strong belief that for people of all ages, learning can be fun, and if you relish the process, you are much more likely to learn something!

Every lesson includes the use of several workbooks, learning diagrams, reading books, learning games and rewards (for younger students) ranging from stickers to special prizes for the hardest workers!

I also believe that a hugely understated part of any teachers role is to give a student confidence, as when belief is established, the student's results tend to rapidly improve as well. Therefore my extremely enthusiastic approach to tutoring is vital in building a students confidence and skyrocketing upwards in levels.

There is nothing I enjoy more than seeing a student achieve what they set out to do, be it a particular grade they need to obtain or a skill they need to develop.

GCSE's

Jack's mock results were an E in English Language as well as a D in literature and he wanted to do Economics A level which required a B grade in his final GCSE. Jack had two hours of tuition per week from January to May. He enjoyed going (this surprised me as he hated English before the sessions) and had a new found likeness for literacy. He received a B in both language and literature and can now do A level economics. Jack related very well to David- this made learning easier for Jack and he obtained the grades he needed. His teachers at school noticed a marked improvement in his work when he was having tuition.

Oliver was falling behind in Math's and English. I am very happy to say that his confidence and his ability to retain what David teaches him has improved greatly. I have been playing guitar from the age of 14, firstly teaching myself and then learning from teachers such as Gypie Mayo (Dr Feelgood). I formed my first band at 15 and have been teaching, playing and song-writing in bands ever since, playing in venues such as Ronnie Scott's, Dingwalls, The Marquee, Chinnery's, 100 club, playing alongside artists such as Finley Quaye, Boy George and the Brand New Heavies. My band Sentivo was on Long Lost Brother Records (Jamiroquai, SIA) making recordings for producers such as Mickey Most, Joey Negro and Mark Knight. I studied Music/Guitar Theory at a college in London where I gained my Music Diploma. I am now currently teaching guitar part time at a college in Southend and teaching private and one to one guitar lessons whilst playing, singing and writing music & lyrics for my new band

I very much enjoy tutoring pupils on a one to one and in small group situations. I am currently Head of Department in ICT and Computing. My particular strengths lie in creating Websites, Flash, Programming, Python, Binary Code and Computer Science Theory to A Level. I am 57 years old and I recently took early retirement from IT Management where I was pricing major outsourcing contracts. I studied Maths at University to MSc level and first worked as a mathematician in industry before switching to IT. I have always enjoyed tutoring and teaching in my job and I plan to carry on with that into semi-retirement.

I believe there are certain basic skills that are essential to progress with mathematics. My approach is to address the basic skills and then follow up with practice and more practice. I have found in all my teaching experience that progress is enhanced if the tutee has fun. Self motivation is the most efficient way of progressing and enjoyment of the activity enhances motivation.

I am approachable and patient and try to spend time assessing the tutees individual needs and designing tasks and exercises to address those needs.

It is important to keep records of goals and achievements - I keep individual progress information in the form of agreed specific goals - not too formal but I think it really helps to see progress from the Tutee's point of view.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching since 2003 and since 2015 have specialised by teaching students to pass the IELTS test in which my pass rates are around 97% at Band 7, or higher.

My pass rates are very high as I am a former IELTS examiner for the writing and speaking components. I now use the experience and skills gained from that role to teach students how to pass the test quickly and with the best score possible.

Lots of practice using exam style questions which use a variety of accents. Emphasis is given to all four parts of the listening test in including conversations and following academic lectures.

WRITING
How to structure your task 1 report and task 2 essay. How to describe and analyse graphs, tables and charts. Understanding diagrams and maps. Writing letters and expressing ideas clearly. Checking and correcting your work.

READING
Techniques to save you time under pressure. How to scan a text for the information you need. Skills to help you answer True/False/NG and Yes/No/NG questions. Support to help you deal with the matching headings questions, short-answer, table completion and multiple choice questions.

SPEAKING
Lots of practice on all 3 parts of the speaking exam. How to structure a response. Articulation and pronunciation. Improving Lexical Resource.

All of the materials you will need are provided, hence there will be no need for you to purchase any additional course or textbooks. Band 9 answers are also supplied to you for all of the writing tasks.
