Personal Description:
I am an experienced and successful assistant examiner for a major exam board for A Level French and have marked German and French GCSE in the past. I am an experienced, enthusiastic and friendly tutor, with a high success rate with GCSE and A level students of French and German. I love what I do, particularly helping to build student confidence and helping them achieve their best, in a fun and supportive way.
More recently I have been teaching English as a Foreign Language to Russian, German and French students. I love teaching my native language and helping students to gain confidence in it.
PGCE - University of Newcastle Upon Tyne 1998 (Secondary Teaching Qualification)
I am a fully qualified teacher of Languages and English as a foreign language, with 18 years' experience of teaching all levels.
My work as an assistant examiner for a major exam board, has given me an excellent insight into what is required by the exam in order to gain a good pass.
I love languages, teaching, music and travel.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught and supported students at all levels and for different purpose: GCSE, A Level, Holiday French and German, Primary French and German.
I have been an assistant examiner for a major exam board for A level French speaking, listening, reading and writing for the past 8 years, so can help to support students for exams and help them to become very familiar with the techniques and knowledge required to gain a good pass.
I have a 100% success rate with students. Last year, all 3 GCSE students gained A* and A (French and German) and my 3 A Level students gained A (French), and 2 C's (from a grade E/U in German).
I have taught online for Learndirect/myself, am computer literate, and have had success with students learning long distance via Skype.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a fun and enthusiastic approach to teaching and I am able to guarantee success at all levels. I have lots of success with all levels, and have been successful due to a variety of techniques, knowledge of exam papers/common difficulties when learning a language and teaching experience.
I am able to get the best out of students, by identifying their learning needs and styles.
Adult learners: I have a very successful and unique approach, which allows adults to understand how a language is constructed and which allows them to grasp the basics of a language and then 'play' with the language by adding new vocabulary and phrases. You will feel confident wiih the pronunciation of the language from the beginning, which is essential to make progress quickly and effectively.
What my previous students have said:
E - July 2012 - Intermediate Adult: I needed a quick few lessons to help me pass a resit at University, I realised this was a pressure on Sarah to help me pass but I had learnt more with Sarah in a total of 6 hours than I had in a whole year. I would highly recommend Sarah to anybody, Thank you Sarah for your help, you helped me pass with flying colours! E.
R - May 2012 - GCSE last minute help online - My daughter says " Sarah is really friendly and helpful and she gave me lots of techniques I can use to revise". Sarah has been brilliant at giving a late boost just before the exams, which was exactly what we wanted. We found her incredibly helpful and responsive and are sure she has been a major part of boosting my daughter's confidence - her grades as reported by school have gone up two levels in the last two months and Sarah has been a definite part of this
S - July 2011-May 2012 - Adult Casual - After having lessons for a few months now I can say that Sarah is a very effective teacher and has the ability to explain things in a simple and easy to understand way. I feel I have made significant progress in my learning and would not hesitate to recommend Sarah to anybody wishing to learn french.

Personal Description:
I 've been teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for the past 6 years, both as a Homestay Host and one-to-one lessons for individuals needing additional help in understanding the English that we speak I incorporate cultural awareness in my lessons and particularly enjoy helping with pronunciation and intonation. I believe how you say something is as important as what you say. You won't just be learning Grammar and the curriculum we follow will be set by your needs. I hold a B.Sc. in Education from Temple University, Phila, Pa USA and have been a UK resident for over 30 years. I also hold a Trinity College London (CertTESOL) diploma from Universal Language Training, Woking. Previously, I have worked for large multi-national companies (American Express, Owners Abroad ) and was an International Training Manager for Continental Airlines (now United Airlines) where I taught airline system management to classes of multi-national adults. I particularly enjoy one-to-one teaching whether in person or online(SKYPE), as the effort and energy involved produces real results in a relatively short time. I'm a 'people person' and enjoy sharing my knowledge of the English language and customs and making it fun to boot!
Teaching Experience:

Acorn English Homestay, Host tutoring in my own home. General and Business English, all levels. Currently self-employed with them.

Language Trainers/Listen & Learn, One-to-One Language training services to Business clients in their office or home All levels both General and Business English. Currently employed by them on a freelance basis.
EFLsoutheast - self-employed tutor teaching both General and Business English.
Embassy CES Language School, Brighton EFL Teacher for summer school programme for 3 seasons (2010-2013 inc) taught Pre-Int and Intermediate levels.
ISIS Education Ltd EFL Teacher - 2 week English/Mexican Olympics, Ardingly College, West Sussex.
Tutoring Approach:
One-to-One tutoring gives a real insight into both the English language that we speak and English culture. It is tailored specifically to the individual needs of the student rather than follow any particular textbook. We are free to concentrate on those areas where you may need the most help. Being able to spend time on pronunciation, stress and intonation are areas where one-to-one teaching really comes into its own as well as learning about the English that is actually spoken. Learning/perfecting a new language does not need to be a painful process. A professional, friendly approach in comfortable surroundings is what one-to-one teaching is all about!

I work as an Associate Lecturer on the BA Painting Programme at Camberwell College of Arts (University of the Arts London), as a mentor on the Turps Painting Programme and was invited to be a Visiting Artist at Goldsmiths for 2023, and again for 2024. I also teach writing for a wide variety of audiences. I have experience writing reviews of exhibitions for Mousse magazine and an in conversation series with key artistic figures, including Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey, Markus Lüpertz, Leidy Churchman and Chris Martin. I have a real passion for teaching and I love seeing my students develop. I am very happy to provide reviews from previous and current students upon request!

Personal Description:
I am a graduate of University of Southampton and Queen Mary University of London. I recieved a BSc in Biomedical Science and an MSc in Forensic Medical Science at both of these universities (respectively). Since graduation, I have been volunteering to work with a few GCSE students, focusing on improving their grades and understanding of Maths and Biology. I am most passionate about biology, particularly human biology, physiology, and anatomy and this is where my strengths lie within biology. In my own experience, letting students inform me of their preferred learning style and adjusting accordingly has been the most effective approach to learning. I am always happy to provide extra resources and practice questions based on the topic we have studied. I am a big advocate for education and I believe that no matter your background, you should have equal access and opportunities for learning.
Teaching Experience:
I have tutored 5 students so far ranging from year 4 to year 11 in Maths and Biology.
Tutoring Approach:
I enjoy getting to know my tutee and understanding their learning style. That way, I can plan lessons based on how they like to learn for our sessions to be as effective as possible. I have a very patient and adaptable approach - I can go over concepts multiple times with lots of practice questions to ensure a full understanding of the topic. I like to go at the pace of the tutee - so no rushing! I care about the learning of my students. I also enjoy providing extra resources and websites for tutees to access in their own time, to further push them.

Personal Description:
I am a self-taught guitarist of over 20 years and am technically proficient to an advanced level, there are very few guitar techniques that I'm unfamiliar with and I am continually learning more. I've performed in a variety of venues/situations, whether as a solo performer, in a band or as part of the accompaniment for musicals, each of which require different approaches and disciplines. I've also done plenty of recorded performances which also requires a host of different skills.
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching guitar for over 10 years on an ad hoc basis with private students. I also currently work at Coleg Y Cymoedd, teaching live performance and music rehearsal skills for the last 2 years. I have helped students of all ages over the years go from complete beginners to accomplished players, as well as taking intermediate players and help them to learn more advanced techniques.
Tutoring Approach:
My teaching method involves the same method by which I teach myself - focused practice and repetition. A lot of people try to run before they can walk, spending a couple of days learning chords then trying to play complicated lead parts. What you will work on with me, is having a solid foundation on which to build. We will work together to make sure that when you learn techniques, you learn them the right way first time. We'll do things slowly and smoothly, because slow and smooth equals fast in the long run.
Fundamentally though, we will go at your pace. Everyone learns different skills at different speeds, so there is no pressure to learn anything in a particular time frame, the key is for there to be progress little by little. Equally we will tailor lessons to your wants/needs as much as possible and so you're learning the type of guitar playing that most appeals to you.
A lot of tutors take an approach of getting you to go through guitar grades and whilst that is something we can look into if it appeals to you, I personally have never found grades to be worth anything and certainly not an accurate measurement of someone's ability/talent, so with that in mind, going through grades is not something I will be pushing you to do.
I advise for the first lesson (which is free) to be 1 hour so we can get to know each other and put together a bit of a plan for you. After that I recommend lessons be 30 minutes per lesson per week, as the main goal of lessons is for you to show me what you've practiced in the previous week and for me to then advise you on what can be improved etc., or if it's time for you to start working on something else. In my experience 30 minutes is more than sufficient to achieve this but if you feel you'd like more tuition then of course we can explore that.
Please note the rate shown is an hourly rate. 30 minute lessons will be £15 in person or £12.50 online.
