Michael - Islington tutor
Information About Michael:
Personal Description:
Mathematics and science have played a major role in my life since I left the kindergarten. Eventually I studied mathematics, physics, computing and logic in a five-year course at the University of Leipzig. After I finished my degree, I worked for seven years as a research assistant in theoretical chemistry at the department of mathematics of University of Leipzig, and eventually completed my PhD in this field.
When I moved to London I worked as post-doctoral research fellow in bioinformatics at Brunel University. I enjoy playing chess and belong to a London chess club. German is my native language and I sometimes translate articles from German to English.
Teaching Experience:
I am giving tutorials in maths and German for eight month, including tutorials for undergraduate maths students. Subjects include PDE, Group theory and real and complex analysis.
I have worked as a sessional tutor while I was at university in Leipzig, where I gave private tutorials in maths for university and secondary school students. I also worked for "Schlerhilfe" - a private school that has branches all over Germany - where I gave tutorials for small groups of pupils.
Tutoring Approach:
Logic and mathematics can be learned and practised like sports. Even if you don't believe you have natural talent, you can still learn maths. The best way to learn mathematics and physics is through exercises. In the tutorials I will introduce and explain the matter, discuss examples and give exercises for self-study in preparation for the next tutorial. In this way we can monitor progress and adapt the speed of teaching.
German tutorials will be focused on speaking and listening, but will strongly depend on the needs of the student. If wished, I will also put emphasis on reading and writing skills. I will use recommended textbooks as guidelines if there are no particular requirements.
While I have a general idea about how to teach, I will adopt it to individual needs and discuss my approach with the student. I am open and welcome feedback. This is a good way to find out what suits the student best and to tailor the tutorials to meet it.
