Personal Description:

Personal Description:
I am a friendly and approachable tutor with a huge amount of enthusiasm in the subjects I teach. I was awarded a Scholarship to a competitive independent before working towards a Masters in Biochemistry at Oxford University.

I have since worked as a Pharmaceuticals Business Analyst, as a High Yield Chemicals Industry Analyst in Investment Banking and as an Air Traffic Controller. In each case the knowledge and skills from my education have been critical. I would now like to gain the satisfaction of helping others do well in these subjects and attain their potential.

Teaching Experience:

In my industries it is critical to continue learning and passing exams, and in every role, I have always had to pass on my knowledge and understanding to others, which has been incredibly gratifying. More recently, I have enjoyed tutoring maths and other subjects to pupils locally, often to help them gain entrance to competitive schools. I also enjoy spending time teaching my son and my nieces.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should always be interesting to the pupil - inspirational even - and that the onus is on the teacher to make this the case. Learning is about being curious and asking questions; in fact I believe pupils should not be scared to ask any question, which means that learning should feel relaxed rather than formal.

Subjects should not be seen as complex but rather layers of straight forward principals that build on what the pupil already knows in an intuitive fashion. In this way, a good teacher allows understanding to grow naturally and not feel like a challenge.

SAXOPHONE-I am an experienced saxophonist. Currently I play both alto and baritone saxophone. I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free, but now that i have gained enough experience, not just as a teacher but at a very high level in bands too, I am starting to tutor. I teach many different styles, have it be jazz, pop or classical. I offer tuition for students of all ages. SAXOPHONE- I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free to gain some experience in teaching. I also play at a high level in the Hillingdon Music Service concert band and Sax Group, as well as in multiple Jazz and Big Bands.I have been on tour to France with the Music Service as well and have played for weddings too. I now have a good level of experience in both playing and teaching.

MATHS- I have been teaching GCSE and lower level maths for a few years now. I was part of a team who a few years ago went to the UK maths challenge representing my region of London. I enjoy teaching maths and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very useful.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that bringing out the passion in the student is what counts, so for music the genre they enjoy most and helping them fall in love with music that way. With maths i believe having a strategic plan of getting a topic or part of maths that the student is struggling with and keeping at it and doing questions and going through the solutions with them until they understand. I understand that many people struggle with maths or may not like it but i find that someone younger (such as myself) teaching them makes it a lot easier on them. Another good way i find with maths is going through questions and helping them understand how to get to the answer rather than just giving the answer and moving on with a simple tick or cross.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe there are a number of key principles to tutoring.
1) RAPPORT - each tutee is different and it is important not to have a set formula when working with each student, or even for each class. In my opinion, there should be an emphasis on identifying the needs of the student and working towards these goals.
2) TARGETS - what are we working towards, how we can get there and isolating areas for improvement.
3) PRACTICE - regular testing, from past papers to 4) GENERAL EXAM TECHNIQUE.

I studied Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. After 2 years however, I decided to switch to studying Biological Sciences locally at Salford University. I graduated this year with a First Class Honours in Biological Sciences (BSc Hons) ranking in the top 2% of our class.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:

My approach in teaching varies according to the young person I am tutoring. I believe in an individual support programme which is catered around the needs of the individual.

All children and young people learn in different ways, some preferring practise, others preferring more practical demonstrations. Much of my tutoring will be through encouraging the child to think about the subject from different perspectives. Whilst teaching cannot avoid scenario's where children will have to listen - I try to ensure that activities are selected which carefully match the needs of the tutee.

I believe the best results are achieved when you know the child and their interests; once this professional relationship has been established, future sessions can be planned for considering the child or young persons interests.

For example, one of the children I tutor needed support in his writing, his parents were concerned with his understanding of different texts (fiction, non-fiction, reports etc). It is common for boys to be unenthused by writing so I found out that his passion was in sports and football (surprise surprise!) It wasn't long before this young lad was looking through information texts about football and reading newspaper articles about his favourite football team. This provided the perfect opportunity to discuss which components of the text provided what information; this was then linked to the features of reports, recounts, information texts etc.

I am a visiting scholar at Glasgow University at the moment. Originally, I am from Leipzig, Germany, where I completed my diploma in Sociology (equivalent to a Master's degree) with Economics as a minor in 2012. I consider myself a friendly, easy-going and emphatic person. Much of my life is about finding the right balance - especially between mental challenges on the one side, including uni and tutoring, and physical-practical challenges on the other, such as maintaining my bike, hiking and organising a Glaswegian floorball team.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English since 2010 at a German private tutoring institution in Leipzig (a reference for this can be given upon request). I tutored children aged 10-18 and also adults in English. Combined with my knowledge of German as a native speaker, I feel confident that I can provide essential support in building up a 'practical sense' or feel for the German language.

I have furthermore tutored a reading group and I have been a research assistant for Sociology during my time in Leipzig. Thematically, I consider myself an expert on the sociology of science and sociological theory. If you have theoretical essays to write about Marx, Weber or Bourdieu, I can definitely provide competent and quick help. Right now, I am a research assistant at the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) at the University of Glasgow.

Tutoring Approach:

Obviously, the starting point for learning any language is Grammar. I consider Grammar very important in its own right. However, it should just be a means, the key if you will, to a well-written and well-spoken foreign language. My approach to language treats grammar as a means to acquire German pactically.

What I try to do in my tutoring is to connect the interests of the tutee (general interests, hobbies, books or events that catch the tutees attention) as much as possible with the topic at hand. This is to facilitate the learning process and make it pleasant as possible. I know that many tutees do not wish to go to yet 'another teacher' or to 'another kind of school' after their actual school time, so I try my best to create a relaxed learning atmosphere. I furthermore try actively to search and give 'real-world' examples for grammar or text composition rules, for example from German newspapers, TV shows or books.

For me, this 'soft' approach to tutoring (albeit with a very strict core intention) is the best way to simulateously raise the grade level and the level of interest of a tutee in a language. One further point to add to that picture would be that I normally try to avoid frontal tutoring. It usually is much more engaging and exciting (and especially in terms of foreign languages which have to be spoken regularly) both everyone involved when there is an intense dialogue and extensive speaking involved, especially when it comes to reasoning and interpretations.

I know that the fit between a tutee and a tutor is of vital success to the tutoring process and that not everything can be derived from this description in advance. Thats why I give everybody interested a try-out hour of tutoring (that means all that has to be paid are the fees for UK tutors for 1 hr of my usual rate). This is mainly for you to get an impression of me and for myself to gather intial information about your level of German and determining your tutoring needs. You can decide after that hour whether you want to have me as your tutor.
