Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Ian: I am originally from Northern Ireland and have studied French and Spanish at university. I have also spent a year in Dijon and in Madrid, teaching English to French and Spanish students respectively. I am married and am 27 years old. |
Teaching Experience: I was awarded a Merit in my PGDE Secondary Teaching Qualification at Jordanhill Campus, Strathclyde University, and have now been teaching for 2 years. I currently teach French and Spanish to Higher level. Being from Northern Ireland, I am now familiar with both the Scottish and the English (GCSE & A level) education systems. |
Tutoring Approach: The best way to get the best out of a pupil is by taking the time to make the languages accessible to them and by making it fun. Through these methods, the pupil can effortlessly grasp what is required to get them through the exams, whilst at the same time, be more aware of the purpose of a foreign language in the real world. |

| About Christopher: Hi, I am a recent graduate from Oxford University in French and German with a passion for both languages, who wants to help anyone develop anyone wishing to improve. |
Teaching Experience: I have given private tuition before on a word of mouth basis and during my year abroad placement at university I taught English to primary school pupils in Switzerland. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to find out how each student learns best and what their strengths and weaknesses are, before drawing up a learning plan. For example to address difficulties in grammar I would draw upon structured excercises to build confidence, alongside conversational work to enable grammar to be used well in practice. I am also happy to look at essay writing skills, translation skills, literary analysis etc... |

| About Bryan: Hi, I recently finished a PhD in Cardiff University in biology and chemistry. I currently work at Techniquest in Cardiff bay, where I give planterium and science theatre shows as well as work with school kids. Although this job is lots of fun I could use some extra income and thought I might be good at tutoring. |
Teaching Experience: I have acted as a teaching assistant in Cardiff University to undergraduate students. I have been working as a science communicator at Techniquest. In this job I have taught students of all ages in the teaching laboratory and in the planetarium. |
Tutoring Approach: Well, I haven't done any yet. But my approach to science communication has been to make science fun, accessible and easy to understand. Due to my inexperience with private tuition I am happy to negotiate price especially for the first lesson. I would rather run longer sessions (1.5-2hrs) and can teach small groups at a reduced rate for each student. |

Tutoring Approach: I take time to assess the pupils level, by informal interview and gradually working through different problems with increasing difficulty levels. Most importantly, I make sure the learning experience is not stressful for the student. The pupil/guardian has an important role in determining what will be covered, and when he is ready to move to the following topic. The most important aim is the satisfaction and confidence gained from having understood the topics of the day. I make sure the student has a high success rates on the mathematical problems he must tackle, bt extending the level of difficulty within the reach of his capacities, and offering guidance in thinking and problem solving. I believe in the importance of the nature and timing of the feedback I give back to the student. Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Emily: I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies. Since then, I have been living in London working as tutor and also as a box office assistant for the English National Opera. In 2006 I started a degree in costume Design at Wimbledon College of Art, due to graduate in 2009. I am a passionate lover of the arts in all forms, but particularly drama and literature. For the past three years I have been involved with a London based arts collective What They Could Do They Did , helping to organise events in London and Edinburgh. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as private tutor for three years, working with a range of ages and subjects. I specialise in english and drama but have also taught maths, science, history and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools. I also have experience working with children's drama groups and am currently working with the Lewisham Youth Theatre. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage the pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning! |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Roman: I am a full time student at Heriot-Watt University, currently in my second year of an MPhys course. I'm always up for a challenge, and strive to reach goals. I am fairly young, in the sense that I am an undergraduate (but that only means I have a fresher knowledge of the A-level/GSCE syllabi!). I have a reputation of being very clear-minded. |
Teaching Experience: I have no qualifications as such, but have privately taught GCSE Chemistry and Physics on several occasions. And all my tutees came out with A* in those 2 subjects! I am occasionally called upon by my friend to help with A-level chemistry, since alot of it is needed in the Biochemistry sections of his Biology course at University. |
Tutoring Approach: Simplicity! Visualizing a question is very important, so diagrams and pictures always help. The way to tackle any exam is to sit down with the syllabus statement, pick out the difficult sections/things yet to learn, and compose a set of illustrated notes. Meanwhile, look over past papers to get to grips with the way problems are presented and answered. As basic and laborious as they are, flash cards work wonders. |

View Richie's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Richie: I am a 30 year old academic sociologist with a PhD in social science. Having taught in universities in recent years, I am currently taking a year out of academic employment to pursue other projects and to focus on completing a book based on my research. I am therefore very keen to work as a tutor for sociology students during this year. As a person I am friendly, approachable and quite down to earth. It has not been such a long time since I was a student myself and I remember that at times it can be a steep learning curve. I am passionate about sociology and I very much enjoy teaching it - I aim to make it equally enjoyable for my students as well. |
Teaching Experience: I have three years direct experience of teaching sociology: For two years I was a course tutor for undergraduate students, firstly at the University of Salford and then at the University of Manchester. These roles involved teaching sociology in small interactive groups through critical discussion and analysis of key readings, concepts, themes and perspectives. I then worked as a lecturer in sociology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. There I was responsible for preparing and delivering lectures to large groups of undergraduates and postgraduates, for the supervision of individual student research projects, and also for small group tutorial teaching. In these roles I have gained experience of teaching students at different educational levels, from first year students in Aberdeen (who in the Scottish educational system are roughly equivalent to final year A-Level students in England), to second and third years, as well as postgraduate masters and research students. I have also taught students from very diverse backgrounds, including UK, EU, and non-EU students from all over the world, from Asia to the US. This experience has attuned me to the particular requirements of sociology students whose first language is not English. In addition I have enjoyed tutoring a number of mature students, with whom I have had some of my most rewarding teaching experiences. In terms of topics covered, I have taught right across the sociological spectrum, from the sociology of housework to globalisation. I have particular expertise in sociological theory (classical and modern), philosophy of social science, research methods and methodologies, work and organisations, social class and social structure, historical sociology, and science, technology and society. These are my personal research interests and include some of the areas in which I have published articles, but I am very able and very happy to tutor in a wide range of sociological topics. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a flexible approach to tutoring in which I am guided by the needs of the student. This could mean for example giving very detailed feedback and suggestions on particular essays or pieces of coursework to ensure that a student attains the highest grade they can achieve, or it could mean providing more general support to a student throughout the duration of a course by explaining and clarifying key perspectives, concepts and arguments. I can also help students to prepare for examinations by supporting their revision of important or difficult topics and by suggesting the most effective strategies of exam preparation. I am happy to cater to students of all ability levels, from those who may be struggling with sociology and who wish to secure a pass mark, to those who already feel comfortable with the subject and want to take their achievement to the next level. I am particularly keen to provide online tutorial support, which in my experience can be very effective indeed, but I am also able to visit students' homes (or halls) if they prefer face-to-face tutoring. I believe that effective teaching and learning in sociology should combine a structured approach to the material with an emphasis upon independent critical thinking. Sociology as a discipline is defined above all by its willingness to question and analyse taken for granted features of social organisation, institutions, relationships and norms. Effective learning in sociology therefore requires not just mastery of the course materials but also the ability to 'think sociologically' by asking fundamental questions about why people live the way they do. In my approach to tutoring I seek to foster this independent critical thinking, which is the key to sustained academic success in sociology. |

View Katherine's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Katherine: I am a recent graduate of Edinburgh University, with a BSc. (Hons) in maths. I am a full time maths maths tutor. I am willing to travel to your home to teach, and have an enhanced disclosure. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a professional tutor for one year, having enjoyed working part time as a tutor previously. In the past two years, I have tutored over 20 students, and seen an improvement not only in their grades, but also in their confidence and enjoyment of the the subject. I have helped pupils with a predicted grade of a 5 realise a final grade 2 at Standard Grade, after just 5 months of tuition. I have also tutored at both Wallace College and Basil Paterson College, running Easter revision courses for groups of up to 8 students at a time, at Standard Grade and Higher level. While most of my private tutoring is in the students home, I have also tutored within the school setting at Castlebrae High School, and I spent a couple of weeks on a placement in a Primary School as part of my degree. |
Tutoring Approach: I tend to work towards the exam, unless this is not the main intent of the tutoring, I use a mixture of the students school textbooks with past papers, revision aids, and materials I have prepared myself. I like to begin by highlighting the weaker topics, improving knowledge of these, and then working on exam technique and exam style questions. When required I change this approach to suit the student, so if the sessions are more about improving confidence, I will spend more time on fewer topics, and try to make these as enjoyable as possible. |

Teaching Experience: Qualified music teacher, with emphasis on string teaching. I have particular experience with young children, although adults are also welcome. Pupils have performed magnificently at concerts! |
Tutoring Approach: Open to discussion as every learner is different |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Sarah: I'm a graduate who has spent three years living in France studying French language and culture. I am enthusiastic about my subject and enjoy passing on what I have learnt to other people. I'm easy to get on with and am an approachable person. |
Teaching Experience: I tutored French children whilst living in France, and worked for half a year in a French school working with young children. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to make the subject interesting for the student, not intimidating - by using music or conversation for example. I realise that speaking in a foreign language can be embarrassing for students, so I try to make them less self conscious. Although grammar is important, French is a living and evolving subject, something which makes it constantly intersting, and I think its important to reflect this in lessons. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Holly: I am a twenty-two year old graduate who originally moved to Liverpool to study at the university, but I love the city and now live here permanently. I currently work full time in an administration role but hope to forge a career working with young people over the coming months. I am cheerful and friendly with a love of meeting new people, and I have a range of hobbies and interests, including swimming, dancing, playing badminton, reading and writing, film, theatre, art and history. |
Teaching Experience: I am a young professional who has recently started working as a private tutor in my spare time, and I find it very enjoyable and rewarding. My current client is aged ten. In addition to this, I have had experience of working with children and young people of a range of ages through my voluntary role as a Young Leader in the Scouting association. I have also worked as a Play Leader for Lancaster City Council, running a summer play scheme for a group of sixty young people, and as a Student Advocate during my time at university, which involved working on government-funded projects with young people to explore their options for the future. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor I am very positive and encouraging, with a strong belief that learning should be as enjoyable as possible for the student. I believe that it is important to take time to gain an understanding of the students' personal interests, in order for the teaching to be tailored to their individual personalities. I am very creative in my lesson preparation and always patient, believing strongly in positive reinforcement and in inspiring an appreciation of the subject being taught. |
