Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Amalia: I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I came to England in December 2007 to join my husband whom I married in January 2008. Other than teaching I spend my time gardening and singing in a choir. |
Teaching Experience: Teacher training for primary, secondary and continuing education courses of study has made me familiar with the needs of students as well as with the educational system both at home and abroad (IGCSE preparation and Cambridge PET, FCE and CAE) As a teacher I also learnt to be patient and clear thinking. My teaching experience has brought me into contact with people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Teacher training for primary, secondary and continuing education courses of study has made me familiar with the needs of students and I learnt to be patient and clear thinking. I also took some teaching training courses such as New Trends and Teaching Young Learners (Embassy CES - Hastings) as part of my personal- and professional- plan of surpassing myself. |
Tutoring Approach: While I was doing my teacher training one of the subjects was Portuguese as a Foreign Language. I'd always thought Spanish and Portuguese were quite similar but little did I know it was going to be that hard. After a year of trying hard and with the help of our teacher I realize what a student must feel when faced with such a challenge. Teaching is what I am; it defines me as a person. I find it demanding but highly rewarding; I think that is why I've chosen this profession. |

View Nizam's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Nizam: I am a graduate from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. For my graduation I studied Accountancy, Mathematics and Economics as main or core subjects. Presently I am studying MBA from London School of Commerce (or LSC). I have work experience of one year. I worked for HSBC's Global Call Centre in India. I worked there in a department called Customer Credit Services. My job title was Customer Service Executive. It was a permanent job but I had to resign to pursue management studies. |
Teaching Experience: Although I do not have any professional Teaching experience but I did teach privately. My main strength lies in understanding a student's need and I believe as a teacher I should be able to find out that in order to help the pupil. I therefore believe in one-on-one tuition. In a class it is not possible to teach that way. I also believe that no one student is better than the other, it is some the technique that they need to apply in order to do well in an examination. As a teacher i believe i am the one who can teach a how to make learnings fun and not boring by giving him or her too much of homework. In maths especially, you can never solve all the problems and prepare for an examination. |
Tutoring Approach: As i have discussed above, i also feel good if i can pass on or impart with knowledge that i had gained. I like to see young student to learn, but not in a fashion where they don't enjoy what they are learning. I want to make sure that my student to enjoy as well as learn what he or she has to learn. |

View Jamie's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Jamie: I have recently graduated from the University of Dundee in English Literature (2:1) and I'm looking for some casual work whilst I secure a more stable career. I am a keen reader and I very much enjoy watching films and even the odd play. I am a friendly, outgoing person with a patient manner. I do not mind also providing a babysitting service whilst tutoring a student, be it the tutee or another child. |
Teaching Experience: Although I've not got any professional qualifications in teaching I am an educated, passionate and friendly person and I've also got a strong will to finish a project once I've started it. I'd be most diligent and exceptionally empathetic to any struggles the tutee might have with their studies; I struggled with a mild for of dyslexia in my primary years and then went on to do a degree in English! Safe to say that I can relate to a student's frustrations and have got my own ways of dealing with them. I've now taught two of my cousins (ages 6,9) in English, science and a small amount of maths. I've also taught my girlfriend and two of my friends how to drive (I've done an Institute of Advanced Motorists qualification and I'm cheaper than a proper instructor!). I was also involved with helping out in an a first year English class for those with learning difficulties whilst I was a prefect at high school. |
Tutoring Approach: When teaching someone I feel it is very important to understand the student's interests and abilities and then use those skills to approach the subject that they struggle with. For instance, someone who is excellent at History but poor at English might have an excellent memory for facts but a poor grasp of language. What I'd do in that situation is convert language into what it essentially is; a set of rules and facts, most likely with the aid of humorous and memorable phrases or other psychological triggers. With this technique, and this particular hypothetical student, I'd maneuver their useful abilities into a position that they were able to bootstrap their less proficient skills. |

| About John: Recently Graduated from the University of Nottingham with a First in Mathematics. I enjoy playing sport, music and socialising with friends. I'm currently temping at Eon to save up some money to go travelling! I have a full enhanced CRB disclosure from the Scout Association. |
Teaching Experience: I have little experience of teaching in the classroom but I help out at Scouts every Wednesday and I'm used to explaining and teaching them things. I'm very patient and can approach problems from many different angles so I'm sure to find a way of learning that will suit the tutee. |
Tutoring Approach: I will go through any maths material the tutee wants to do. If this involves finding extra material that is no problem. I will set extra problems to be done so that I can see the tutee is learning and see which parts he/she may need more help with. The bulk of my lesson will be teaching a generalised way of doing problems so that they can be applied to more than one situation. I'm extremely good at exam technique which is crucial for mathematics. |

| About Gavin: I trained as a Microbiologist and gained my BSc (Hons), I also have a post graduate diploma in Microbiology and Biotechnology. I then trained to be a secondary school science teacher and I gained my PGCE. |
Teaching Experience: I spent 2 years teaching in the Phoenix School in Dawley, Telford, Shropshire. I ran the BA CREST award scheme, which involved after school and lunch time activities and school trips. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy tutoring as I often performed this role during voluntary revision sessions for my previous KS3 and KS4 classes. I much prefer this way of teaching as there are usually smaller class sizes, which means I can spend more time with each student. This helped to improved their grades. |

View William's Profile

| About William: I work as as a private tutor of German, French, Spanish, EFL and ICT (Information and Communications Technology) |
Teaching Experience: I teach German or French to GCSE and A-level /university entrance, and Spanish to GCSE-level. I also teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL). As a fluent speaker of German, French and Spanish, I have taught these languages for the last 22 years. My teaching experience is wide and varied and includes private tutoring, community education, company /business language training and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), both for EFL schools and at the University of Wales. I have also worked full-time in state Comprehensive schools and have taught at an International School in Germany. Finally, I am also able to provide basic help with ICT tuition and have recently successfully completed the Open University's Certificate in IT and Computing, a first-stage qualification on the way to an I.T. degree with the Open University. Please contact me should you require any further details of my teaching experience /background. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to spend a lot of time concentrating on improving the speaking and listening skills of my pupils and adult learners, as this is what helps most to build their confidence in using a language. I also believe that grammar is very important in learning a language properly, and ask that pupils /learners complete some simple grammar exercises between lessons in order to maximise their learning and to really progress in the language. However, since learning a language is all about USING it, I do not overburden my pupils /learners with too much grammar or unnecessary extra work. I like to think that my pupils /learners really enjoy their lessons with me and am totally committed to their progress and to building confidence in them. Finally, I should point out that I also need to charge a small travel fee in order to cover my petrol costs. Naturally, travel fees vary according to distance - please contact me for further details. |

View Rosa's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Rosa: I am currently a full time student at University College London studying Hebrew. I have a Cambridge accredited CELTA qualification in teaching English as a foreign language. I think it is important that every student can receive a patient, inspiring and confidence-building learning experience from a teacher who knows their subject well. I would be happy to try and fulfil this role in someone's learning either as a support to their current learning or a teacher in my own right. My strengths are languages, art and history. |
Teaching Experience: I taught English for one year in China at a Vocational school in Gansu. I also taught many one to one lessons during my time there as well as classes. I have spent one month teaching s Language School in Highgate, London. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all, it is important to identify which level the student is at. The next stage is to recognise the strengths and problem areas of the student. I would then gear the lesson towards working on the issue areas. If it is a long term teaching appointment, I would possibly ask what the student was hoping to achieve from the lessons. I would then structure and plan the lessons to achieve these goals. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About andrew: I am currently a second year medical student at the university of bristol. In my first year I managed to gain the award of distinction, something only offered to 12 out of 240 people in my year group adn overall I am on course to complete my degree with honours. I enjoy working with people and am very sociable. I spend a great deal of time doing sports and going to they gym as I believe its important to have a well balanced and healthy lifetsyle. Coupled with exam tutoring I am also open to any requests for help with applications to medical school which I know from experience can be a very stressful period. |
Teaching Experience: During my GCSEs I tutored biology students going through the same exams. I then extended this into my A-levels where I worked in particular with one student to pull up his biology grade by two marks and so get him into the course he wanted. Together we succeeded in doing this. Although my experience is limited I believe because I have been thorugh the system so recently I am able to understand what is expected for the exams from a viewpoint many other tutors haven't had the opportunity to do so. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe a lot of the time the difficulty comes from a failure in communication from the teacher. Putting things into different formats and processing them properly is the correct way to learn. Its never enough just to know something, things must be understood and this must be tested. To do this questions need to be both asked and answered by the pupil and that I believe is a key role of the tutor. Im fully open to tutoring more than one student at a time if asked to. |

Teaching Experience: I have experience of teaching maths as an undergraduate tutor throughout my PhD (4 years) and tutoring A-Level and GCSE maths to younger brothers and sister and also to family friends. Despite being young...ish (27), with a Mum as a GCSE maths teacher and only recently finishing being a student myself, I have an understanding of methods and processes important to learning. If tutoring at university level, applied and pure maths only. For lower levels any field of maths is fine. |
Tutoring Approach: Willing to take on any maths topic. Will start from the current level of understanding and build from there at a pace that is able to be set by the student. Can adapt any lesson or topic to cover any relevant or extra material required. I take a logical approach to all aspects of maths and believe that a more complete understanding comes via a thorough grasp of the basics. |

Tutoring Approach: Diamond is extracted in raw form. In order to get the shining surfaces of a diamond, one needs to grind and polish it accurately at specific angles. A tutor does the same to a student. He finds the specific areas where a student in weak and then polish him/her with his qualification, intellect and experience. |

Prior to going self-employed I was a Script Editor and Story Editor on EastEnders and before this I worked at BBC Radio Drama and Laura Cecil Literary Agency (specialising in children's books). I have a real passion for reading, writing, performing- anything to do with the written or spoken word! I also strongly believe that learning should be fun and that everybody should get a fair chance- it is possible to achieve anything if you put your mind to it! |
Teaching Experience: I have taught Dramatic Writing to 1st Year BA students at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. I regularly facilitate Drama / Creative Writing workshops in both Primary and Secondary Schools. I am currently working with Year 8 and 9 boy students at Bushfield in Peterborough- Creative Writing Workshops inspired by Lord Of The Rings, as well as running a drama project at Red Balloon Learner Centre in Cambridge. I have also been given funding by the BBC to run a Creative Writing Project with vulnerable youngsters for the Action For Children Charity. As well as this, I also regularly read and edit fellow writers' and students' work. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to be as positive and empowering as possible. So much of successful learning is to do with confidence. I aim to make my students feel as comfortable and secure as possible, to create a non-threatening and inviting learning environment.
