About Kerry:
I employ a modern and fun approach to tutoring. The key to successful learning is finding the ways in which we, as individuals, learn best.
I am honest, reliable and most importantly - I enjoy the process of teaching and the rewards of seeing my students achieve - however small that achievement may be.
I endeavour to help my students succeed yet in doing so, have fun and feel confident to use their newly aqcuired skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked within primary education in the UK for the last 2 years.

Previously I had worked as a teacher in Barcelona and Almeria teaching English to a wide range of ages and abilities.

I have taught English to large groups but feel that many progress quicker and retain their acquired skills far more successfully from individual tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer an adaptable, fun style and endeavour to provide stimulating lessons that are looked forward to, rather than dreaded!

For those wishing to better their English skills, I pay careful attention to encompassing reading, writing, speaking & listening skills and handwriting.

When teaching children, being flexible is essential. I constantly monitor performance and adapt my lessons as required.

Whilst teaching pupils of primary age, I often involve parents in order to help them participate in the future of assisting their children. New techniques of calculation and terminology can often seem daunting but are not as scary as they seem!

About Emily:
My name is Emily and I am 19 years old. I studied at Newstead Wood School for Girls, Orpington, where I gained all A / A* grades at GCSE and studied French, Music and Religious Studies at A Level, for which I received the grades A, A, B respectively, including 96% for French. Alongside this, I have grade 8 violin, grade 7 piano and grade 5 music theory, all with distinction. During my school years, I was a member of the Bromley Youth Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, both of which I led.

Because of my age, I am aware of what is currently being taught in schools, and what is expected of students in French and music in particular. I have a passion for teaching and am fun, friendly and cheerful. I understand the difficulties faced by students in large classes, who do not always receive the attention they need, and I feel it is important to address this issue. I have chosen to tutor French and music because these are my areas of expertise and the subjects about which I am most passionate. I have just finished a year studying Music and French at Sheffield University, for which I received a 2.1 mark. However, I have decided to pursue music performance and am now taking a gap year in order to apply to Music College.

As I do not drive, I prefer to tutor from home. However, I am happy to travel a reasonable walking distance to the tutee's home if required and am also willing to tutor online if preferred. I understand that choosing a tutor is a difficult decision to make, therefore I would be happy to meet with people so they are able to make an informed decision.

Teaching Experience:

During the academic year 2005-06 I mentored academically gifted Year 2 students in English and maths at Tubbenden Infant School, Orpington. I taught the children individually and was teaching skills beyond those being taught in the classroom and setting and marking assignments. I am also hoping to become a teaching assistant this year at St Olave's Preparatory School, Mottingham, and am in the process of undergoing a CRB check.

Tutoring Approach:

My skills would be best applied in helping tutees improve in aspects of work with which they are struggling as well as challenging more able students to learn more advanced skills and deepen their knowledge of the subject. I will also proof read any work or coursework as well as helping the tutee to improve it if necessary and I will help tutees develop revision techniques if appropriate. My approach would aim to maximise the tutee's understanding of their topic or subject with minimum stress.

About Catherine:
Hello!
My name is Catherine, I am a 19 years old French girl studying Politics at Leeds Uni.
I decided to go to England because I enjoy new challenges, I am really adaptable, open minded and easy going.

Teaching Experience:

I already was a French tutor for my first year at University. Last June, I was a Matron in an English boarding school where I founded a sketching society.
At university, I was the french reference for the whole hall of residence and the people I helped all got very good marks for their exams.
Next September I will be a seminar tutor for 1st year politics students.

Tutoring Approach:

If you already have some interest for French, I will be the one who will help you make your way right to the top (of the class!)!
Teaching is something I really love doing. I will be happy to help you improve your grammar, pronunciation, orthographe, as well as teaching you about the very rich french culture. The cultural side is indeed the part I love to speak about (as a lesson or just randomly) because I believe learning a language is not only learning its grammar.

About Nadia:
Personal Skills
I am a hard working, presentable and reliable young lady. I am prepared for, and look forward to, a challenge in my working life. I enjoy variety and challenges and believe that sustained hard work and dedication will help achieve job satisfaction and personal development. Whilst being able to work independently, I also have good inter-personal and social skills and enjoy working as part of a team.

Teaching Experience:

I have also worked as a teaching assistant with Young Enterprise North East, delivering one of its Primary programmes. It was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed working with young people.
A similar, behind the scene, experience was to work as a general assistant for the West End Youth Enquiry Service. It was an informative and formative experience as this was an underprivileged area of Newcastle and I was able to witness the needs of the young people living here and become aware of the assistance that could be given to them.
I am also hoping to start my role as a SETPOINT ambassador role for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in schools and colleges in the North East Region.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe teaching is very much a student centred approach. Each student is an individual. That is what gives the personal tutor the responsibility to attend to the needs of the individual that is learning.

About Steven:
I am a native English speaker with an excellent academic background, currently studying for a doctoral degree in the School of Chemistry at the University of Oxford. I have written and submitted my doctoral thesis in Organic Chemistry and am now waiting for the final oral examination of this thesis, hopefully within the next few months. This means that I currently have no work commitments and ample free time. I am looking for part time work tutoring 2-3 days a week and am fairly flexible about the hours / days of work. I have an obvious speciality in Science.

Teaching Experience:

Although I primarily have experience teaching Organic Chemistry to undergraduate students, I also have experience teaching science to younger students. Through a Student Community Action Scheme I have experience tutoring A-level chemistry to students, typically from disadvantaged backgrounds, over an extended period of two years. Additionally, I have intensively tutored GCSE Science and Maths over the past few months to a student from Rugby School, on school leave due to injury. Although not academic experience, I am also a rowing coach who has taught from novice up, and have found the qualities of patience and clarity fostered by this discipline are equally valuable in teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

From my experiences so far each student has required a different approach in order to encourage the best from them. With weaker students I have found it best to identify key problem areas and first build up confidence in these core topics with clear explanation, analogy, past-exam and exam style questions and continual re-enforcement; always with a view to scoring marks in the final exam. With brighter students I have strived to stretch them beyond their current syllabus rapidly moving between topics and involving real life applications of science. However, above all I believe that clarity from the tutor and an environment where the tutee is encouraged to say 'I don't understand this' is the most successful approach.

About Hons:
I work as a professional engineer and have been for the last 11 years. I have a BSc in engineering.

Maths is a vital part of Engineering and is used everyday to solve problem's such as areas, volumns, forces, stresses, it is the language of science and engineering. Most tutors brush up on their topics a few days before tutoring. Because I use maths everyday, I understand it fluently and should provide great tutoring knowledge.

Many kids feel that mathematics is an abstract and useless subject in life. With my experience I can give fine examples where the maths could be applied, and help change their attitude and views toward Maths.

Calculus is a little rusty but can provide some pointers and help with basic - circle, matrices, vectors, sequences, series, differentiation, integration, induction, at low cost, you provide the books, I'll provide the explaination.

Teaching Experience:

Over the years I haved worked around the UK with various companies large and small. In some of those offices we have taken on secondary school students at GCSE and A level standard for work experience. I was involved in mentoring some of these students with an introduction to engineering design, applying some basic mathematics, which is already taught at GCSE level, technical drawing, use of computer, basic research and management techniques.

As a more experienced engineer now, I have been involved with mentoring our university graduates, although their knowledge is be far greater than that of a secondary school student, the basic communications between people are fundamentally the same.

Tutoring Approach:

From my own experience from studying for exams, learning topics off by heart and not understanding it had been a problem. Some people are good at maths and others are not. For those of us who are in between it's a difference between a C grade or a B grade.

It is important to see where the pupils weaknesses are and the topics which they are struggling to grasp. I would provide time and effort to try and explain in the best way the more difficult topics so that the student will understand it better. With the topics which the student has a good understanding of, it would only be a matter of more practise.

It is assumed that the topics have been covered in school already and that the tutoring session is a means to advance the students understanding of the topics by further explaination and practise.

Recap - all and all, it is most vital to be able to recap and remind oneself of all the topics before the exam. Once the student has a good understanding of all the topics, I can provide a quick recap session to briefly run through all the theory to refresh the students mind.

If it is necessary to tutor more than one student at a time, I will only charge 75% rate for each additional student up to a maximum of 4 per hour.

On a one to one basis, I can run through the topics and aid the student on some problems. In a small group, it can best be divided up into 15 minute intervals where the first 15 minutes is spent on theory , followed by practise with a 15minutes 1on1 basis depending on the numbers, similar to a tutorial class.

Should a study session be longer than 1 hour, I suggest 2x45 minutes, similar to a standard double lesson or lecture with a 10-15 minutes break in between.

Circular Motion, Gravitational Force, Centrifugal Force were some of the toughest topics in higher A-level physics. Can help out with tutorials.

I can provide tutoring up to a 10mile radius from where I am located.
