Information About Simon:

Personal Description:

I am in experienced teacher who is passionate about my subject (physics) and communicating this passion to students in ways that make learing the subject accessible and intuitive.

Teaching Experience:

12 years classroom teaching (Ealing Hammersmith & West London College, East Norfolk Sixth Form College)

Tutoring Approach:

In secondary education, I studied humanities subjects before switching to physics. I deeply appreciate how difficult it can be for many students to understand physics, and my 12 year teaching career has been based around developing an approach to physics teaching that make learners' comprehension of physics more accessible.

The approach is based around qualitatively and quantitatively understanding the relationships between abstract representations and what concrete entities such abstractions represent. This allows learners to appreciate not just what the correct answers to questions are but also why those answers are correct, what the meanings of the questions are, and how the understanding that they assess are important in developing clear and stable physical intuitions.

The approach stresses how the interconnection between different topics in physics at different levels of study is useful in the better understanding of particular topics and in improving preparedness for study of physics beyond a learner's current level of study.

I have 7 years of experience in writing assessment and explanatory physics materials for various physics curricula. Specific physics curricula tend to focus on the acquisition of isolated fragments of knowledge that it is difficult for learners to piece together to form a stable understanding of. My experience with various curricula allows me to present what is shown in any particular curriculum in a broader context that better grounds the understanding of it.

I aim to instil in learners a deep understanding of physics that will be useful in a world of increasing AI use rather than a shallow understanding that increasing AI use is making increasingly obsolete.
