| About Romina: I am a 27 years old Italian girl. I am curios and ready to share my knowledge. I am getting a degree in Communications for "La Sapienza", the first University in Rome. View Hannah's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Hannah: I am currently studying for a PhD in Neuroscience (connections in the brain underlying learning and memory) at Bristol University. I have a 2:1 degree in Physiology & Pharmacology and a Masters degree in Applied Biosciences (specialising in Neuroscience) from Nottingham Trent University. I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and French. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching 1st/2nd year Medical and Veterinary undergraduate students; demonstrating practical laboratory classes and taking small tutorial groups. My experiences as both a student and a tutor mean I understand some of the difficulties students face in learning new topics and applying their knowledge. I have often been told that I'm approachable and give clear, concise explanations. I recently received 'teacher of the year award' from Bristol University for my efforts. I am currently in the process of having my CRB check. |
Tutoring Approach: I find that understanding concepts and application of knowledge is an extremely important aspect of science that many students find difficult to master. As a result, this is something I focus on to help students progress in their studies beyond the classroom (helping students to think for themselves). Practice in essay/scientific report writing and answering examination questions will, in addition to reading, form an integral part of tutoring sessions and homework (if homework is required). Mathematical problems in Biology, including statistics, will also be included in tutoring sessions where necessary. I will cover exam board syllabus but, of course, pay special attention to those topics that the student struggles with. It can be intimidating to admit that you don't understand something in front of a classroom of peers, and so I think it is important that students feel at ease during tutoring sessions, can feel free to ask questions and take learning at their own pace. If you can interest someone in a topic, they will find it much easier to learn and this is what I hope to achieve! I am very willing to offer help (via email, or telephone if appropriate) to tutees outside of tutoring hours and I am very patient, understanding, friendly and approachable. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Niall: I am a 21 year old student, currently studying Financial Maths at Loughborough University. I have always had a flare for maths and excelled at it throughout school. Outside of studying, I am a keen sportsman, playing both tennis and golf to a relatively high standard. I am a hard working and reliable individual who loves new challenges. |
Teaching Experience: Although no formal mathematics teaching experience, during college and university, I often helped out classmates and other friends who struggled with problems in classwork or homework. I am a qualified tennis coach though, so I do have experience in working with children and adults in a coaching scenario which I think is a great benefit. |
Tutoring Approach: I love to pass on my knowledge (in either maths, tennis, or any other subject) and help others to learn/improve. I feel that I can adapt my style to the pupil, as everyone learns differently. Some like to be shown a method/technique and left to try, whilst others like to be talked thought it step by step. I am able to cater for all learning styles. |

View Leigh's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Leigh: I am a friendly, outgoing student from Nottingham and I am starting a Medical Degree in September at Newcastle University. I have a wide range of qualifications at excellent grades, up to and including A2-level. In my spare time I enjoy running and playing the oboe (I recently achieved Grade 8). I am a keen swimmer and a part-time lifeguard. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a part of my school's Maths Buddy scheme for the past few years, helping younger students with their difficulties with the subject. I have also provided informal tutoring services to peers. |
Tutoring Approach: I encourage tutees to approach problems from a difficult angle, rather than simply saying "I can't do it". I also believe strongly in presenting information in a different format than usual, for example using flow charts and diagrams in place of normal written notes, as this can often aid learning. |

View Lorenzo's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Lorenzo: I am Italian, aged 29, currently living in Brighton where I finished a MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems (including topics such as computer programming, mathematics, evolutionary studies, biology, neuroscience and philosophy). In my free time I am a Tango dancer (Argentinian Tango) and a photographer. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience is (unfortunately!) limited to: - teaching system administration to professionals (a 40-hour crash course on linux and system administration) - informally teaching computer science, networking and UNIX/Linux administration to fellows of the Linux User Group in Mantova (of which I am a co-founder) - volunteering to teach pupils upon request (in Italy) |
Tutoring Approach: Apart from love of science, the main reason why I enrolled into college the second time was to pursue the academic career and to become a professor. Even though my teaching experience has been limited due to lack of concrete possibilities (tutoring is much less common in Italy than in the UK), every time I had the chance to teach it was one of the most beautiful experience in my life. The joy of seeing the other person understand and learn (a skill, a theory, an application, a concept) cannot be compared to anything else. |

| About Ewan: My name is Ewan, I'm 23 years old and from Glasgow. After completing my BA (Hons) in Glasgow, I moved to Manchester to do a Master's in History and have decided to stay to do my teacher training (PGCE), allowing me to teach History in high schools. I am a very patient and personable person, and really enjoying working on a one-to-one basis with students. I have a wide range of interests which I like to bring into teaching where appropriate; using films, music and pictures can make learning a bit more interesting and appeal to many students own personal learning style. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently training to become a History teacher. I have spent time observing classes in various primary and high schools, and look forward to intense placements from September 2007 as part of my PGCE course. I have tutored before at A-Level and Degree level, and had some great results and feedback. I have an enhanced CRB (police) check. |
Tutoring Approach: Very happy to gear my approach around individual needs. I am happy to come to students homes, for students to come to me, or meet in another location. I am happy to answer emails, texts or chat on the phone or arrange some online time between sessions to maintain a bit of inspiration and make sure students are on the right track. I like to use some multi-media (film, music and pictures) to make learning fun and help with source work. I am also keen to make sure students are fully prepared for exams, and have spent some time looking at how to approach question in these stressful situations. |

View Aurélie's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Aurélie: I am French and English has always been my favourite subject at school. After studying English for two years at the Lyons University, I decided to move to Montreal to study Translation. I really enjoyed this bilingual city and my life there but after having graduated, I moved back to Europe because I really wanted to live in the UK and to discover the British culture. So I am currently living in Leeds and trying to begin my career as a freelance translator. I love arts especially music and cinema, I have played the saxophone for 13 years and I like to subtitle movies from English to French. I am also thinking about doing distance learning courses in order to have a qualification to teach French as a Foreign Language. |
Teaching Experience: When I was living in Lyons, I used to give private English lessons to several teenagers and adults. In Montreal, I taught French to 2 English-speaking people and also had conversation classes English/French. I used to be a Music Conductor for a Junior Orchestra so I am also quite used to work with children. |
Tutoring Approach: I think the most important thing is to make the lesson interesting for both of us. Especially with children, I like to teach French in a fun way, through songs, movies or cartoons and telling stories. But I also think that Grammar is really an important point in the French language and you have to learn it to understand the basis of French. Depending on what you want, I am ready to teach you the French language and the French culture through exercises, conversation and the best of my knowledge! |

| About Philip Charles: I am 26 and at present I am a Director at the Adam Smith Institute, an influential Westminster think-tank. Last year, I finished an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and previous to this I studied History at University College London. I am hard working and determined to excel, skills that I will pass on to whoever I tutor. I know what it takes to succeed and will work beyond what is expected to enthuse this confidence in to those that I teach. |
Teaching Experience: While at LSE, I tutored another fellow student from Japan who had only a limited grasp of the English Language. I took this extremely seriously and he managed to pass the MSc from being in a position in which his professors were certain he would fail. Outside of academics I have spent a number of years teaching tennis to children and adults of varying skills and abilities. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to teaching is based on two fundamental premises. The first is that it is absolutely essential to find satisfaction in the learning process. This may not come through the actual material that needs to be learnt and it is up to the tutor to inspire in the student the confidence to succeed. As your tutor, I will lay down the learning structure that will cement this through detailed lesson plans. The second premise is that supervised practise testing is imperative. This needs to be followed by a thorough evaluation of the results, in order to understand where improvements need to be made, in both knowledge and approach. As your tutor I will be available outside of teaching time to answer questions by email and phone, there will be no extra cost for this service. |
