About CJ:
I am 21 years old and I recently graduated from Strathclyde University. I live in Queen's Park with my wonderful wife, who I married in March, and two cats. My interests include frequenting the gym, watching sports and listening to music.

Teaching Experience:

Zero formal experience, though more than accustomed to tutoring as I have 4 younger siblings whom I have helped from primary to first year university.

Tutoring Approach:

Through my academic life, from high school and throughout university, I have experienced many ways of teaching. I aim to put together all of the methods I found helpful to me, while rejecting those I felt were least effective. My approach is not to supply answers, or even hints to make the answer easy, but to provide the student with a firm grasp of the subject so that the route through any problem can be confidently worked through. I believe the quickest and most effective way to learn is to do, so my lessons will be example intensive with my own worked solutions used as a guide.

About Katherine:
I have been described as friendly and kind, which I believe are important qualities for a tutor to have. I enjoy chatting to people about their experiences in life and seeing what we can learn from each other - I am good at listening as well as at relating what I have to say in an interesting and clear manner. I am adaptable and sensitively aware to other people worries and lack of confidence.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored a Key Stage 2 student in Maths, taught two young teenagers the flute and mentored and tutored a Classics and English Student at university. I have worked in a bilingual school in Romania and have done work experience at a number of Junior schools in England.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in listening to one's student, finding out what they know and discovering the most effective way for the individual concerned to learn. I do not believe in "dumbing down" for "less able" students as I think this complicates matters. I find the best approach is to encourage the pupil to find things out for themselves, giving them guidance, advice, explanations and, most importantly, encouragement, along the way.

About Akintola Idris:
I am currently a second year Engineering student at Imperial College London averaging over 80% and a top three student in my year. I am a young enthusiastic individual who always wants to achieve my best. I am quite funny (with silly science jokes at times), interesting and love to be around people. I am a sport fanatic and watch and participate in most sports except water sports. I am caring and helpful to people around me.

Teaching Experience:

I have various teaching experience both at A-level and GCSE. While studying my GCSE, I was made a mentor to junior students and we organised weekly classes whereby myself and other mentors help out junior students with their maths and science. This helped develop my interest in teaching. And during my A-level, I was part of a Peer Tutoring scheme. In my first year, I had to deliver maths lecture weekly in a local Secondary School (Oakland secondary school) in Tower Hamlets. The scheme really worked well as some of the students eventually took the Higher paper in GCSE maths and excelled. In my second year on the scheme, I helped out first year A-level students in Maths, chemistry and Physics. It was later extended for me to help colleagues (second year A-level students) who are weak or having difficulties in the same subjects. This experience helped to to understand various teaching methods and ways of approaching questions to match various people's understanding. During my first year in university, I tutored up to seven GCSE and A-level students in both maths and physics. Some of my students particularly the A-level students have now gained entry into universities after achieving good grades.

Tutoring Approach:

Effective tutoring should always involve the student. For teaching to be effective the student has to participate so my method of tutoring always involve the student as much as possible. Understanding and Exam-focused is something that has to be emphasised on. I try as much as possible to help the student understand the basic concept of the course and then relate it to exam and real life situations. I also have past papers which I go through with students to enhance their exam techniques.

About Tracey:
I have been privately tutoring for over 15 years in NW Kent & SE London and have taught in excess of 300 students in that time. My degree is in Chemistry and Biology and along with my many years tuition experience I am able to deliver personal tuition in a straightforward, and relaxed way.

Teaching Experience:

I work as a Maths instructor as well as a private tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

After 15 years I still enjoy the amazing moment when a student tells me with huge relief that they get it. That is when I know the results of our hard work are paying off. Improving a student's academic performance first begins with changing their mindset. Somewhere through their academic career they were given the wrong message about their learning ability and so are still operating in a way, which leads to ultimately uncomfortable results.

My job is to diagnose the problem and design the plan to set about remedying it, which will come in many different forms. When a student begins to trust and believe in me as a team we start to see significant improvements. The amount of which depends on how much the individual student is prepared to commit to consistent study. No subject is impossible to learn. I believe that by teaching with simplistic methods and a consistent study routine that is respected by the student they will obtain the optimum level of success - the sky is the limit!

About Emma:
I'm a Journalism graduate who has spent the last eight years working in a media monitoring agency in Edinburgh. I went to school in England and have 11 GCSEs and 4 A Levels. My particular areas of expertise are in reading and writing skills, English and basic French. I currently work as a writer/researcher in the oil and gas industry.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent many hours helping in primary classrooms, assisting the teacher with literacy and computer lessons. I have been frequently employed by family friends to help improve their children's reading and writing abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be very different from a school environment. That's not to say I don't expect hard work, but I do try and make lessons fun. I often got strange looks when helping out in schools when children would start laughing during our sessions. It's like anything in life - if you enjoy it, it doesn't seem like an arduous task!

About Hannah:
I am currently studying for a PhD in Neuroscience (connections in the brain underlying learning and memory) at Bristol University. I have a 2:1 degree in Physiology & Pharmacology and a Masters degree in Applied Biosciences (specialising in Neuroscience) from Nottingham Trent University. I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and French.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching 1st/2nd year Medical and Veterinary undergraduate students; demonstrating practical laboratory classes and taking small tutorial groups.
My experiences as both a student and a tutor mean I understand some of the difficulties students face in learning new topics and applying their knowledge. I have often been told that I'm approachable and give clear, concise explanations. I recently received 'teacher of the year award' from Bristol University for my efforts.
I am currently in the process of having my CRB check.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that understanding concepts and application of knowledge is an extremely important aspect of science that many students find difficult to master. As a result, this is something I focus on to help students progress in their studies beyond the classroom (helping students to think for themselves).
Practice in essay/scientific report writing and answering examination questions will, in addition to reading, form an integral part of tutoring sessions and homework (if homework is required). Mathematical problems in Biology, including statistics, will also be included in tutoring sessions where necessary.
I will cover exam board syllabus but, of course, pay special attention to those topics that the student struggles with. It can be intimidating to admit that you don't understand something in front of a classroom of peers, and so I think it is important that students feel at ease during tutoring sessions, can feel free to ask questions and take learning at their own pace. If you can interest someone in a topic, they will find it much easier to learn and this is what I hope to achieve!
I am very willing to offer help (via email, or telephone if appropriate) to tutees outside of tutoring hours and I am very patient, understanding, friendly and approachable.

About Antonia:
I am a 25 year old female English Language and Linguistics graduate (BA Hons, University of Sheffield.) I live in the Hunters Bar area of Sheffield and currently do a mixture of freelance and agency tutoring work.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience tutoring one-to one at GCSE and Alevel level (English) and also experience in teaching English as a foreign language to International students. I have also taught reading and writing skills at primary level.

Tutoring Approach:

The most rewarding aspect of tutoring for me is adapting my approach in a way that meets the demands of each student. This means that I tailor my approach finely, to the particular individual. The first session involves an assessment of the student's learning style, so I can find out what best motivates them. For example, if they they are motivated by a target-driven approach, then we write down a list of achievable goals, and then periodically do a review to see if these goals have been achieved. I find this approach advantageous for monitoring progress closely. However, I also favour a less military approach in the case of students who do not work efficiently under pressure (me included!) I find this especially useful if students are experiencing extreme difficulties and need support rather than constant targets. I aim to encourage and motivate students in a way that enables them to reach their full potential, and also emphasise the importance of questioning and discussion in my lessons particularly in the case of Alevel subjects. About Silvana:
Enthusiastic and hands-on french and german language tutor with a passion to teaching languages.
Results driven, I have knowledge of all GCSE exam boards and aim to deliver and improve students to achieve their potential.
Many students in my experience have expressed the advantage of not only excelling at the linguistic approach to passing their language exams, but also being taught the real art of exam practice and technique.
This approach has also led them to apply this technique to other subjects of study.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching qualification, but have been tutoring for several years and have been CRB checked. I am registered with a north London tutoring agency and have a real passion for language tutoring.

I am approachable and sensitive towards learners, and i can adapt the style, pace and content of lessons to meet the particular needs of the learner.I believe tutoring is all about helping learners to help themselves, supporting them to set goals for themselves, and helping them to meet these goals.
