About Sophie:
I am an 18 year old girl, who recently finished her A level examinations at Southend High School for Girls. I am currently on a gap year and during this time would like to tutor young people in those areas which I am most proficient in- Art, Photography, Media Studies, History and English (as well as the 11+ which I passed myself). Art and Photography tutoring especially I am able to provide at a high standard, and I will be going to University to study the former in September 2009. In terms of experience for Art, I have sold 2 paintings, been paid to paint a mural inside a caf earlier this year, earn money by creating and selling jewellery, and have been commissioned to create a poster for an esteemed driving school in my local area. I was also recently awarded my schools annual 'Art Cup'. I am extremely interested in History and English and am well read in both. On a personal level, I am very friendly, empathic and patient, all of which make for good teaching skills.

Teaching Experience:

Due to my age I do not have any qualifications in teaching, but I do have a plethora of younger cousins so I am used to spending time with younger people and enjoy teaching and helping them with things. I come from a family of teachers and this has definitely rubbed off on me, I both an enjoy and have been told I am good at teaching, especially art. In terms of actual experience, I recently had to commandeer a group of around 25 people my age in an art-based capacity, which was very rewarding and produced excellent results. Also, my A level in sociology has led me to increase my understanding of, and improve my interaction skills with young people aged 11-15.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe with enough enthusiasm and good teaching anyone is capable of, well, anything, and as a tutor I would aim to provide both these things. I do not believe in a harsh approach to teaching as in my experience it only lowers spirits and hinders productivity and creativity. I would aim not only to help potential students increase their skills and understanding, but also their enjoyment of the subject, which I think is essential to success. Because I genuinely do enjoy the subjects I am offering to tutor, I would aim to share that enjoyment and thereby increase enthusiasm, and ergo skill.

About Mark:
After twenty years experience in engineering and IT I am now starting a photography business being about to complete a photography degree.
In my professional experience I have had to provide technical support to people of all abilities, often having to teach complex subjects in plain English.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of mentoring new recruits and student interns in professional environments; tutoring Maths and sciences to GCSE and A-level; and informally teaching friends and colleagues many aspects of IT/computing and photography.

Tutoring Approach:

I always try to understand what the 'tutee' needs from me. No two people are the same so I tailor my approach to your requirements and skills. I believe that everybody is capable of understanding any subject -- the key is to make that breakthrough: and by finding the holes in the learner's grasp of a subject great things can happen!

About Michael:
I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them.

I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD.

Teaching Experience:

I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome.

About Sheila:
I am a mature professional, originally from Yorkshire. I hold a current enhanced CRB check and have spent most of my life working with children and young people. Most of my work has involved teaching pupils with special educational needs. At present I work part-time as a teacher in a hospital school with students 5-19yrs. I am highly qualified in teaching. In addition to a Bachelor of Education degree with honours, I hold an MA in the Psychology of Education, and diplomas in the teaching of reading (literacy and literature) and in Counselling. My work with children has not been restricted to teaching - I have worked as a Youth and Community worker, as a Counsellor and as a Child Protection Officer. My hobbies include drama, dance and choral singing.

Teaching Experience:

I trained as a teacher of infants but I have worked as a teacher of all ages and abilities. The majority of my teaching has involved pupils who experience a variety of special educational needs - social, emotional and behaviour difficulties, moderate learning difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, dyslexia, medical and mental health difficulties. I have also taught in secure accommodation. My teaching is effective - my work as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in a large primary school in South London received a very good Ofsted report because the pupils with special educational needs made good progress - better progress than pupils in the school who did not have special needs! I am also on the Upper Pay Scale for teachers who have proved to government that their teaching interventions make a difference to pupil attainment.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a great deal of experience as a teacher of individuals and small groups in school. I also have many years experience of private tutoring. My success comes from teaching each person, adult or child as a unique individual. I am invariably popular with my students because I endeavour to make learning fun whilst retaining high expectations of effort and success, attempting to be patient, firm but fair. My fee reflects my knowledge, skill and experience and my own investment in my craft over time. However, because I believe in the provision of quality education for all, I am prepared to negotiate fees according to need, so do ask if this applies to you. I try to integrate my tutoring with the tutees school syllabus and approach, increasing motivation with encouragement, challenge and the introduction of new knowledge in carefully paced steps.

About marie:
I'm a French 20 years old student. I am studying law at University College London. I have three brother and sisters: I like children and I am used to!

Teaching Experience:

Last year I went to Burkina Faso and I gave French lessons to African girls.
I have also supervised group of young people, between 7 and 17 years old: it was a good experience to be with children.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is for me a good way to share my language, to have good contacts with English students. In Africa I discovered the beautiful feeling which appears when the student has understood. Tutoring needs patience, and it is reward with the tutee's progress.

About Rachel:
I have been teaching languages for the last 10 years in many different settings around the world. I have always enjoyed learning and teaching languages as it opens so many doors to meeting new people and can also increase international work opportunities. As a linguist myself, I understand language and the problems students face when learning a new language. I can also provide you with many techniques to enable you to gain a much deeper understanding of what you are learning and methods you can use to aid your own personal learning in and out of class.

Teaching Experience:

I have a Masters in interpreting and translation and began to teach English to foreigners in an informal capacity at this time (93). I went on to gain my qualification and proceeded to work as a teacher to French primary and high school students in Reunion island.
On my return in 98, I began to teach French and German as a private tutor to individuals and small classes for conversational and business purposes.
I did a secondary PGCE teaching French and German up to A Level and Spanish up to GCSE and I am now a private tutor in the three foreign languages and am also available to teach English as a foreign language. My students range from those who require assistance to pass GCSE, A Level and final year university examinations. Also young children gaining foreign language acquisition and students wishing to learn for pleasure or business purposes.

Tutoring Approach:

Approaches to tutoring vary depending on the requirement and expectations of the individual. I have a MA in interpreting and translation and am fluent in all three languages. English is my mother tongue and I can identify with problems students face in learning learning. I have experience of working in secondary school and have been working with students from GCSE to final year degree for the past 4 years. I also teach language for business and leisure purposes.
Conversational language sessions may prove more relaxed than classes where targets must be reached in order to gain the highest possible mark in a specific qualification, however, I do try to put students at ease in all situations, as this is far more conducive to learning and makes the lessons more fun. I tailor lessons to your personal requirements and also burn them onto disc so you can recap in between lessons. I can also set 'tasks' to do in between time if you wish for reinforcement purposes.

About Ebru:
I am currently completing my PhD in the Deaprtment of Sociology at Lancaster University. I did my BA in economics and pursued my post-graduate study on discourses on state development around "East" and "West" imaginaries. I am interested in private and group tutoring in the following areas: teaching Turkish as a foreign language, sociology, history (in particular, empires, imperialism, modern European history, enlightenment, etc.) , politics (in particular, Middle Eastern politics, state theory, theories of discourse and subjectivity, political theory). I also hold a certificate of teaching and learning in higher education, obtained from Lancaster University, the Department of Education in 2006.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a teaching assistant (with temporary contracts )at Lancaster University since 2005. I taught the following courses: Introduction to Sociology (in the Department of Sociology), Empire and Imperialism, The Creation and Destruction of Modern Europe, Enlightenment (Department of History). I also taught Turkish as a foreign language to the children of ex-path employees working in Istanbul, Turkey.

Tutoring Approach:

I would describe my teaching style as systematic and the teaching agenda as up to date. I prepare outlines for each class and ask the student to retrospectively read through the notes as we proceed. The interactive nature of teaching enables the student to actively engage in the thinking process and encourage them to learn the philosophy of the subject, rather than memorising the information delivered. As we go along, depending on the subject, the student is asked to relate the contemporary material (newspaper articles, books, etc.) to the topic covered in the classroom. This could be (for example, reading and commenting on the news in a Turkish newspaper, or relating contemporary debates on the global financial crisis to debates on Marx in a politics class). For the student, the most important thing to do is to follow the tutor's instructions and repeat what is discussed in each class.

About Anna:
I've been teaching and working with learners of various ages . I love teaching and I love working with young people as they always teach me something new while working together. It a challenge to lead them through bushes , showing some possible ways of treating or solving
a problem .As a person I am honest , punctual , friendly but also demanding work at with young learners.

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching for 15 years in secondary schools , public and catholic, university as well and at vocational courses in Poland . I work as a teacher of English - EFL . I am known as a very inventive person with lots of ideas .I'm used to spending much more extra time with students to make project or just to explore some unknown for them area of scientific fields of knowledge .

Tutoring Approach:

I had had tutoring lessons before coming here but in Poland . Here I would have the first time so I may just say - the material and methods are flexible just to suit learners needs and abilities but when facing some difficulties I always try to bear in mind the main aim we are working for and time to get the abilities or knowledge try to use different methods and strategies to help adapt material and give personal support and praise the work done by learners.
