About Nadia:
I am a student of Spanish and Portuguese at the university of Manchester. I have lived 7 years in France and speak it fluently while my level in Spanish is very good and my Portuguese is catching up to my Spanish. I received an A grade in my A-level art and I continued through to a foundation art course at Camberwell-University of the Arts London. So I am aware of the structure required for GCSE and A-level in order to achieve maximum marks and also how to create a good portfolio to get into art colleges. My aims are to finish my degree and do a Masters in translation to enable me to work anywhere in the world and continue with my real passions, ski instructing and painting.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience tutoring French for GCSE and A-level and Spanish for GCSE. My approach varies depending on what the specific focus of the client is requiring. Some students struggle with pronunciation in which case we do a lot of reading out loud, repeating words, learning tricks such as keeping a log of phonetically written words for reference when practising without a French speaker.

I have also been a ski instructor for two years and I am aware of a variety of teaching techniques for different students and try and use a mixture of these to enable maximum learning outcomes.

Tutoring Approach:

For languages:

As stated before it varies depending on the needs of the client. Generally I would start by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the client and plan accordingly. If the students are currently studying at school then I will try to keep the same schedule if planned according to tenses. I will also help with their homeworks by clarifying the topics and rules of tenses and grammar. I also believe it to be important for the client to develop an interest in the culture and history of the countries of the subject language and will integrate this into the classes for certain tasks. It is very important to be enthusiastic about the topic studied and I am very keen on tapping into the interests of the student i.e. some students respond well to listening to the target language's music in their spare time. On top of this I will be continually assessing the student in order to make sure they are definately improving.

Art:

For art it also depends on the needs and wants of the client. For example if the student needs particular help with GCSE or A-level art I will need to know which board of examination is being used to assess the clients work. Then I will help with techniques, different ways of researching, suggest particular artists and movements relevant to their work, help them develop their ideas. I am also able to take the client on outings to museums and art galleries. I am to develop their knowledge of techniques, art history as well as giving them the methods involved with finding inspiration and letting this carry you through right to the end of a project in a creative and original manner. I can also help with creating a successful portfolio for entry to art college. I also will reccomend activities to do seperate of any course to develop basic skills.

About Adam:
I am currently completing my Phd at the University of Liverpool after finishing my masters degree at the same institute in engineering, a heavily maths and physics orientated subject. I currently tutor between 10 and 20 hours per week depending upon the time of year.
I hold a full enhanced CRB disclosure which is available on request as are a list of references. For the last 4 years I have been especially busy preparing tutees for the Blue Coat entrance exam.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for seven years, since the beginning of my undergraduate degree. I started by tutoring friends of the family which sprouted into a small network of tutees. This experience laid the foundations to begin teaching classes at the university. I currently teach to masters level within the university of Liverpool.
I have a large number of past and satisfied pupils who I can give details of for references. Many of whom where sourced through agencies who charge a pricey commission!
Most of my experienced is through working with Blue Coat applicants, KS2, KS3, GCSE and A-level applicants. However, I have also helped to prepare candidates for several different school and military scholarships. I would suggest calling for more details.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy a highly industrious relationship with my tutees. The single greatest advantage of private tuition, in my mind, is that it can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual. For this reason I will be happy to come along for a free half hour consultation with no obligation.

About Jenny:
I am an English lady who has lived and worked in many different countries. I have a love not just for languages but for learning about and experiencing different cultures and outlooks on life.
For a hobby, I work on ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts, with people in France, Spain, and world-wide.

Teaching Experience:

I have a wide range of teaching experience over 30 years, in primary and secondary schools, in universities and adult education. I have worked on a one to one basis, in small groups and with larger classes. I have particular experience of helping students with dyslexia or other learning difficulties.
Please note: Greek means 'ancient Greek' (classical or biblical).
I can also teach Catalan, to GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

My chief aim in tutoring is to give the students confidence in their abilities and to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses as well as the way they learn best. I like to make the lessons enjoyable and stimulating, adjusting the level of challenge to suit the student. The lessons do not have to be for an exam, they can also be a leisure activity. My philosophy is that everyone can learn a language, and that it can be fun!
I work on a one to one basis and also with small groups if friends want to get together. Charges are reduced per student for group classes.

About Victoria:
I am young but have several years' experience across ages and subjects. I am currently at University, and will be going on to a career in teaching next year, where I am looking forward to teaching in the city.

I have a genuine passion for education and love making a difference to young people. I am likeable and enthusiastic, and extremely friendly, although I command respect.

Teaching Experience:

I taught English and Mathematics in Nepal for two months, in adverse conditions and to classes of up to fifty children at a time.

I have been tutoring for five years, and have had excellent results. Please contact me for references, as I have many happy tutees (and parents!) who have experienced this! I have tutored children and teenagers from varied backgrounds and at different ages and levels of ability. For some, it is not about getting an A, it is about realising your child's full potential.

At University I am Leader of the SCA Homework Club, which provides tuition in schools in Durham, using the skills of University students.

I have also completed several months' work experience in a variety of schools, both primary and secondary, and worked as a teaching assistant.

Tutoring Approach:

It varies very much between students. Some need to be reassured of their abilities, and worked gently through examples and questions. Others need a firmer approach and strong encouragement, whether it be to achieve their full potential or just to finish their homework!

I like to bring variety and try to make sessions fun, and build confidence by using different approaches to make students feel comfortable. I also enjoy playing educational games, particularly with younger students and using props to develop mental arithmetic skills, and frequently use tables races etc to aid memory.

I usually set students homework, and spend time planning this and the session. I will then mark the work and give feedback to students/parents as necessary. Often it is the case that practice makes perfect (!) and I have found this extremely positive in the past.

About Annie:
I am currently and Undergraduate studying for my BA at the University of Cambridge. Tutors can be scary sometimes (from what I can remember) but don't worry I am very friendly and easily approachable! Having just recently completely my own General and Higher Education, I can easily relate to what the students are going through and will be able to share sometimes tips that helped me get through my exams.

Teaching Experience:

Previously I have worked as a Summer School teaching assistant, helping children between the ages of 9 to 13 with Physics. I have also volunteered with local inner city schools as a classroom assistant, helping children learning english as a second language with literacy and numeracy.
But my most valuable experience is having recently gone through the same pain and torment studying for exams as many of the students who are currently studying for their GCSEs and A-levels have.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer in understanding your material and enjoying what you are learning. However I understand it can be frustrating sometimes when you are trying to pass and exam, that you just don't have enough time to understand and learn everything. My aim is to introduce some of the techniques I learnt from sitting exams and also reinforcing all the facts and checkboxes you need to know.

About Emma:
I'm a Journalism graduate who has spent the last eight years working in a media monitoring agency in Edinburgh. I went to school in England and have 11 GCSEs and 4 A Levels. My particular areas of expertise are in reading and writing skills, English and basic French. I currently work as a writer/researcher in the oil and gas industry.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent many hours helping in primary classrooms, assisting the teacher with literacy and computer lessons. I have been frequently employed by family friends to help improve their children's reading and writing abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe tutoring should be very different from a school environment. That's not to say I don't expect hard work, but I do try and make lessons fun. I often got strange looks when helping out in schools when children would start laughing during our sessions. It's like anything in life - if you enjoy it, it doesn't seem like an arduous task!

About Jane:
I am a recent graduate of Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in Primary and Secondary Education specialising in Mathematics. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and greatly enjoy passing on my knowledge to others and helping them to understand this subject.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently a supply teacher working in a number of schools working with children of all ages. Although I specialise in Mathematics, I teach all subjects at the Primary level. Working in a variety of schools means that I am able to see lots of different teaching styles and approaches and that I can see methods that work particularly well. I have worked in both state and private schools.

Tutoring Approach:

Every child learns differently and so the tutoring needs to be tailored to the pupils own learning style whilst preparing them for exams or the work ahead in school. I will work at the child's pace whilst ensuring that they are achieving their full potential. My lessons will be purposeful, with a clear aim, but will also interest the pupil through using a range of activities. I have been told that my strengths in teaching are my knowledge of my specialist subject, my ability to set appropriate teaching and learning objectives and successfully monitoring and assessing pupils' progress.

Although I have no direct teaching experience it has always been a passion of mine. I have helped my younger cousin through her school life as she is dyslexic. I provided on-going support and made her feel totally at ease with all subjects that she completed. I have recently helped my brother in law undertake his GCSE's and my husband undertake a course in Maths and English in his Learn Direct course. Both of whom were dyslexic. I have also undertaken work experience in a primary school, and have helped others in both my college and university life during studying.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that a relaxed style benefits tutees greatly. Deadlines and an enthusiasm are essential to my style. Although my style is rather informal (I prefer first name terms and a friendly approach) I am able to stay disciplined and helpful.

About Cheng:
I am seventeen years old, holding a deferred place at Cambridge university for Natural Sciences (Physics). I have just graduated from Lenzie Academy, and I want to spend a year exploring the world. This includes teaching - to be able to pass knowledge on to others, and see that sparkle in their eyes, I look forward to it greatly.

Teaching Experience:

Although I certainly have no official teaching qualifications, I have always enjoyed, and often succeeded, in teaching others. My classmates say they treat my as more of an authority than my teachers - but I do not wish to come across like that. In all my subjects across Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, I find the content to be not so consicely and clearly taught. And so I made my own notes - which can be as short as 10 pages for an entire subject - that I find to be all that one needs to ace at the exams, and indeed properly digest the syllabus. Indeed, my friends agreed that what seemed so daunting was deep down so simple and sometimes elegant - that they think my explanation was not even that important! I smile at that, of course, happy that they comprehend and not memorise. I have also helped my mother to go back into education, by showing her that A level/Higher mathematics is not as complex as she thought.

Tutoring Approach:

It is simple - I focus on understanding, and skills of analysis. At Advanced higher level at least, the easiest way to achieve an A is not even exam orientated teaching, in my opinion - because there are really not so many fundamental concepts to master (except in pure mathematics). I ask them to forget the "tricks" that they have been taught, and give them, in full honesty and clarity, the firm foundations from the beginning. These are both the deep rooted concepts, as well as methods of analysis. Further on in the teaching then, I would find that they can pick up things so quickly, so self-initiated and renewed with confidence - they do not even need my help a lot of the times!

About Anick:
I am a young French Canadian woman who enjoys travelling. I have a lot of experience in different aspect of communication. I did some radio shows and lectures in Peru and Quebec. In French, I am familiar with peculiarities of both French and Canadian accents/dialects. I have also extended knowledge of historical and cultural aspects of Quebec and a good knowledge of France. I travelled through more than 50 cities all over France and lived more than 1 year studying in Montpellier.

I have an intermediate level of Spanish, so I can provide teaching for basic conversational skills.

Teaching Experience:

I have given basic English lessons to peruvian teenagers.
I tutored (being paid for it) many times though my academic background, most of the time to students in the previous level but also in my own class. I also did that volunteerly for a charity.
My last experience was as an environmental educator at College level, so I'm used to work with teens and young adults.
I created an organization providing an interesting education opportunity to students by cooking collectively. The organization (Canada-based) won a governmental prize for it's originality and the quality of it's structure.

Tutoring Approach:

I tend to focus on the student's need. My aim is to provide tools and tips for more learning autonomy. Project or problem solving pedagogy could be used if the student is open to it.
I want my student to become quickly functional but also to find some keys to keep on learning efficiently by him/herself.
I believe that learning a language should be fun and I want my student to have as much fun as I have learning/teaching.

About Natasha:
Native French speaker from France, I have completed the International Baccalaureate at Lester B. Pearson College in Canada and my BA in Anthropology & Communication studies at Goldsmiths College in London. Since completing my PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Oxford I have been a full-time teacher in a comprehensive secondary school in Oxfordshire.

Teaching Experience:

I am experience in giving one-to-one tuitions to young people as well as adults studying for exams or learning French as a hobby.

I have experience teaching in Primary schools as well as Y7 to Y12 and I am currently teaching Y7 to Y11.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring varies depending on my student's language learning skills and experience as well as their purpose for learning French.

However, I believe the advantage of one-to-one tutoring with a native speaker is the opportunity for the student to improve their comprehension and practise their speaking and pronunciation; therefore I try to immerse my students in a French speaking envirnoment throughout the lesson.

If I can be able to share some of my experiences and skills to help assist you in your studies and succeed, then that is great! I like to think that my tutoring sessions will be fun and informative.
