Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Victoria: I am 25 years old and have recently moved to York to start part-time postgraduate study in English literature. I really enjoy teaching and working with young people, and I believe I'm a good motivator as well as an organised, efficient educator. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent the last 3 years teaching EFL in a public senior high school in Japan with the JET Programme. I also taught EFL in a Chinese high school for six months. As an undergraduate student I volunteered at a homework club for local secondary school students, and in my vacation time I was employed as a group leader for a drama workshop company, typically leading a group of a dozen teenagers at a time. |
Tutoring Approach: In our first tutorial I'd like to familiarise myself with the work you are being set at school/uni etc. and see some examples of your writing. We'll also talk about what your weak/strong areas are and discuss what you need to work on. By the second tutorial I will have made an outline plan of how we'll study together. I'll cover not only the content required for any exams you are sitting, but also exam techniques and essay writing techniques. I'm confident that as I get to know you I'll be able to tailor my approach and materials to suit your individual learning style and your personality. My aim is for you to enjoy studying and to get top results! |

| About Eleanor: I am a Cambridge Classics graduate, and I am currently studying for a post-graduate professional law qualification. I am available for tutoring during the week and on weekends, and can either host tutees at my flat, come to the tutee's house, or meet somewhere mutually convenient. I can tutor lots of different subjects, and can take on more than one tutee in each class if required. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring professionally for over a year, and have had a high success rate with my tutees all achieving As and A*s in recent exam results. |
Tutoring Approach: As tutors go I am relatively young (22), so I try to connect with my tutees on a more personal level and develop in them some enthusiasm for their studies. I try to motivate my tutees to take pride in their successes and to recognise how to learn from any set-backs. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ashley: I am a recent graduate from the University of Manchester currently tutoring part-time and working for a Church in south Manchester. |
Teaching Experience: I don't have a great deal of formal teaching experience but my time at University has prepared me well for being able to present scientific ideas and explain them to my peers and supervisors. |
Tutoring Approach: I aim to tailor my tuition to students individual learning style and present ideas and concepts in a way that is easiest for them to grasp. I will provide through insight into the subject material often going slightly further than the syllabus requires just to ensure that the student has a proper and full understanding. With this in mind, the focus is always on exam success and I have looked into past papers and marking schemes to see the common exam questions that appear and how best to tackle them. Above all I believe that science is to be enjoyed, and I try to bring that across in all of my lessons! |

View Caroline's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Caroline: After completing A levels in English, German and Psychology, I went on to work in licensed conveyancing for a year. It soon dawned upon me that this was not the career for me. I wanted to be in a career which I could be passionate about and make a difference. This is when I decided to go to university and pursue a degree in Education Studies and Psychology at the University of Greenwich. My degree gave me an insight to the way in which we learn and behave and laid a solid foundation on which to build my knowledge of teaching. Immediately after successfully completing my Degree, I was offered a place on the PGCE primary education course, which I completed in 2006. |
Teaching Experience: I am a qualified teacher, trained in both key stage 1 and 2 (5-11yrs). My first two years of teaching were spent in London where I taught in Key stage 2. I am currently working with a mixed Key stage 1 (yr1/2) class in an Essex primary school. I have taught children of varying abilities and backgrounds and am able to adapt my teaching to suit the needs of the individual child. I am aware of and up-to-date with all current primary education policies and frameworks set out by the government, as well as having an excellent understanding of the marking criteria used to assess and level students at KS1 and 2 SATs. I am also very comfortable teaching pupils at Key stages 3 and 4 and feel that although I am primary trained, I have the skills, knowledge and ability needed to help those taking both KS3 exams and GCSE's. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a great believer in making learning meaningful and making sure that the student can relate their learning experiences to their real lives. I have an excellent understanding of the different learning styles (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) and can adapt my teaching to best fit the pupils needs and personal style of learning. I also feel that it is important to use lots of questioning and exploration through speaking and listening in order to make the learning experience more authentic. If children feel involved in their learning and can take ownership of it, they are more likely to succeed. |

View Fiona's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Fiona: I graduated from Lancaster University in 2007, at which time I was a classroom volunteer and also worked in a nursery. I obtained a TEFL qualification from Lancaster University as well. I completed my PGCE in schools in Plymouth and Cornwall, through University College Plymouth, St Mark and St John and achieves QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). I am available for tutoring in person weekday afternoons/evenings and any time at weekends. During school holidays I am available at any time. |
Teaching Experience: I am head of Religious Studies in a secondary school at present, but I also have experience teaching History, Geography, Philosophy and Ethics and English as a Foreign Language. My degree in Sociology well equips me to teach sociology. I also minored in Law and Polictics at university, and I am more than happy to teach these subjects. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe tutoring offers the student a more personalised approach to learning and offers the student the opportunity to gain more from a subject. Tutoring would be tailored to meet the needs of the individual student and would compliment school-based learning. My approach to teaching is similar to that of tutoring; I like to help students relate to topics covered easily and use examples/stories to help them recall information and games/activities where appropriate to engage the learner and bring the subject to life. |

View Isabel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Isabel: I am a friendly and enthusiastic teacher and my main aim is to help children move forward in their learning. I can explain things carefully and in many different ways in order to help a child/children get to grips with their new learning. I always ensure that I have a clear understanding of the work to be covered before taking on a new learner. I am calm and patient so that the learner feels confident in their learning and does not feel pressurised to work faster or further than their ability. |
Teaching Experience: I have completed a four year degree course that consisted of various placements, exams and time in university. This has given me a Bachelor of Education Degree (Honours). I have also completed one year of full time teaching and am now a fully registered teacher. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring is time where a child can take their time with their work and go at a pace which suits them. They can explain their difficulties and be given the opportunity to work slowly and carefully through their tasks. Tutoring allows me to spend one-to-one time with the pupil, which is what many children need, and allows me to see where difficulties lie and work through them until understanding is reached. Most of all, tutoring is time where the child has ownership - they express difficulties, questions or areas of excellence, which can all be worked on and explained in a relaxed atmosphere where they are allowed to go at their own pace. |

View Ian's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Ian: I am a master's student, currently reading for a master's degree in International Relations at King's College London. I took my undergraduate degree in History and Politics at the University of Oxford. I've worked with several research-driven think tanks, spent a year working on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, and have experience working in television research. |
Teaching Experience: I've worked with a broad range of young people to improve their academic performance, teaching all levels of ability across a broad range of subjects. Providing tailored teaching programmes for each student has ensured that every client has the best possible opportunity to realise their full potential. In the past, I've worked with A-level students applying to Oxford, through the Oxford Access Scheme. I've conducted mock interviews, and workshops to prepare state-school and ethnic-minority applicants for the interview process. In the United States, I participated in a scheme which gave disadvantaged children the opportunity to come to Washington to study and visit important landmarks and centres of government. I enjoy working with students and young people, and have strong communication skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to have a friendly, open teaching environment, since learning is very much a two-way process, dependent upon good communication. I am enthusiastic, and want to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment in the teaching process. I'd expect to build up a strong rapport with all pupils. Regarding academic method, I strongly believe in having a firm focus on aims and outcomes relevant to the subject and pupil. Syllabus-centric teaching with an emphasis on thorough understanding is, I believe, key to educational success. Broader learning should also supplement the general curriculum, and I would endeavour to develop the broader analytical skills of students, alongside providing a rigorous examination of the core syllabus. Within this framework, each tutoring experience needs to be tailored to the needs and competencies of the pupil, and I would make certain to provide a custom-crafted educational programme for each client. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Helen: I am currently a postgraduate student at the University of Leeds, I am due to start a PGCE course in secondary Physics in October 2008. In 2006 I gained a BSc (2.1 hons) in Astronomy and Philosophy, this covered all areas of physics to some degree including relativity, cosmology, quantum mechanics, atomic structure, mathematics for physicists and the history of the universe. I also studied relevant philosophy modules such as Philosophy of Science, Space and Time, and Biology. I am about to complete a MA in Philosophy of Physics, this course has involved studying the implications of relativity and quantum mechanics as well as the history of science and the impact of science on religion. It has involved considering how science should be defined, how it progresses and whether modern theories can be considered 'true'. In order to share my enthusiasm for science I have created a website, The Star Garden, where I publish educational articles on all areas of science. |
Teaching Experience: From October 2008 I will be enrolled in an online course with Canterbury Christ Church University in order to gain a PCGE in Secondary school Physics. This 18 month course will involve a total of 6 months teaching experience. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a friendly, informal approach which I can adapt to the needs of the student. I believe that the best way to understand something is to find an interest in it and so I hope my enthusiasm will be encouraging. I will ensure that students have a full understanding of a topic before moving on and can provide feedback to parents on a regular basis. |

I'd already done A-level French which gave me a grounding in grammar and spelling, but being in France took my speaking skills to a new level, making me highly fluent. This year I'm starting a degree in French and International Relations at Leeds to formalise my fluency. |
Teaching Experience: In France I helped teach colleagues French and also gave weekly English lessons to French speakers, so I've had a wide range of experience - from absolute beginners to near-fluent speakers. |
Tutoring Approach: With me, the disadvantage is that I am a student, not a professor. However, my strong points are that I'm young, I've actually lived in France for an extended period of time, and my language ability is very good. This means that I can really give an authentic tutoring experience with cultural knowledge, not just out-of-a-textbook standard lessons. Also, because French is a learned language for me, I can more easily help people understand French from an English-speaker's point of view: I had to learn it too! To make it easier to decide, I'll give you a first lesson for free with no strings attached, so you can know what I'm offering. |
