After completing A levels in English, German and Psychology, I went on to work in licensed conveyancing for a year. It soon dawned upon me that this was not the career for me. I wanted to be in a career which I could be passionate about and make a difference. This is when I decided to go to university and pursue a degree in Education Studies and Psychology at the University of Greenwich. My degree gave me an insight to the way in which we learn and behave and laid a solid foundation on which to build my knowledge of teaching. Immediately after successfully completing my Degree, I was offered a place on the PGCE primary education course, which I completed in 2006.

Teaching Experience:
I am a qualified teacher, trained in both key stage 1 and 2 (5-11yrs). My first two years of teaching were spent in London where I taught in Key stage 2. I am currently working with a mixed Key stage 1 (yr1/2) class in an Essex primary school. I have taught children of varying abilities and backgrounds and am able to adapt my teaching to suit the needs of the individual child. I am aware of and up-to-date with all current primary education policies and frameworks set out by the government, as well as having an excellent understanding of the marking criteria used to assess and level students at KS1 and 2 SATs. I am also very comfortable teaching pupils at Key stages 3 and 4 and feel that although I am primary trained, I have the skills, knowledge and ability needed to help those taking both KS3 exams and GCSE's.

Tutoring Approach:
I am a great believer in making learning meaningful and making sure that the student can relate their learning experiences to their real lives. I have an excellent understanding of the different learning styles (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) and can adapt my teaching to best fit the pupils needs and personal style of learning. I am head of Religious Studies in a secondary school at present, but I also have experience teaching History, Geography, Philosophy and Ethics and English as a Foreign Language. My degree in Sociology well equips me to teach sociology. I also minored in Law and Polictics at university, and I am more than happy to teach these subjects.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe tutoring offers the student a more personalised approach to learning and offers the student the opportunity to gain more from a subject. Tutoring would be tailored to meet the needs of the individual student and would compliment school-based learning. They can explain their difficulties and be given the opportunity to work slowly and carefully through their tasks. Tutoring allows me to spend one-to-one time with the pupil, which is what many children need, and allows me to see where difficulties lie and work through them until understanding is reached. Most of all, tutoring is time where the child has ownership - they express difficulties, questions or areas of excellence, which can all be worked on and explained in a relaxed atmosphere where they are allowed to go at their own pace.

I've worked with a broad range of young people to improve their academic performance, teaching all levels of ability across a broad range of subjects. In the past, I've worked with A-level students applying to Oxford, through the Oxford Access Scheme. I've conducted mock interviews, and workshops to prepare state-school and ethnic-minority applicants for the interview process. In the United States, I participated in a scheme which gave disadvantaged children the opportunity to come to Washington to study and visit important landmarks and centres of government. I enjoy working with students and young people, and have strong communication skills.

Tutoring Approach:
I like to have a friendly, open teaching environment, since learning is very much a two-way process, dependent upon good communication. I am enthusiastic, and want to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment in the teaching process. I'd expect to build up a strong rapport with all pupils.

I am currently a postgraduate student at the University of Leeds, I am due to start a PGCE course in secondary Physics in October 2008. In 2006 I gained a BSc (2.1 hons) in Astronomy and Philosophy, this covered all areas of physics to some degree including relativity, cosmology, quantum mechanics, atomic structure, mathematics for physicists and the history of the universe. I also studied relevant philosophy modules such as Philosophy of Science, Space and Time, and Biology. I am about to complete a MA in Philosophy of Physics, this course has involved studying the implications of relativity and quantum mechanics as well as the history of science and the impact of science on religion. It has involved considering how science should be defined, how it progresses and whether modern theories can be considered 'true'.

In order to share my enthusiasm for science I have created a website, The Star Garden, where I publish educational articles on all areas of science.

Teaching Experience:
From October 2008 I will be enrolled in an online course with Canterbury Christ Church University in order to gain a PCGE in Secondary school Physics. This 18 month course will involve a total of 6 months teaching experience.

Tutoring Approach:
I have a friendly, informal approach which I can adapt to the needs of the student. I believe that the best way to understand something is to find an interest in it and so I hope my enthusiasm will be encouraging. About Mark:
I'm Mark, I've lived in France for about 2 years where I did voluntary work for my church -which involved a lot of talking to people! I'd already done A-level French which gave me a grounding in grammar and spelling, but being in France took my speaking skills to a new level, making me highly fluent. This year I'm starting a degree in French and International Relations at Leeds to formalise my fluency.

Teaching Experience:
In France I helped teach colleagues French and also gave weekly English lessons to French speakers, so I've had a wide range of experience - from absolute beginners to near-fluent speakers.

Tutoring Approach:
With me, the disadvantage is that I am a student, not a professor. However, my strong points are that I'm young, I've actually lived in France for an extended period of time, and my language ability is very good. This means that I can really give an authentic tutoring experience with cultural knowledge, not just out-of-a-textbook standard lessons.

Also, because French is a learned language for me, I can more easily help people understand French from an English-speaker's point of view: I had to learn it too!
