I have recently graduated from Cambridge University and I'm now spending a year living in Cambridge. I have spent a good deal of time working alongside my Mum in the speech and language section of the primary school at which she works. I do not have any formal academic teaching experience but I have had both an active and passive role in the classroom when I have gone into the school. I spent two years coaching a boys Under15 hockey team whilst I was at school and gained a great deal of experience in how to motivate people to achieve their best.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that, when it comes to private tutoring, encouragement and fun are the key elements. If a private tutor is required it is perhaps because they pupil is not getting as much out of the classroom as they need. As a tutor I would try to counteract the formulaic nature of classroom lessons by approaching the work in a way that makes it interesting, appealing and good fun. Relating the work to current affairs and making connections that the younger student will understand leads to an increased interest which fosters encouragement and achievement.

I have various teaching experience with all levels and abilities of mathematics and statistics. I started tutoring my peers at school when it became evident to my maths teacher that I was bored in class. All through university tutored maths and statistics and taught a couple of maths courses. I qualified as a teacher in 2000 and spent a year in Zambia teaching primary school. Afterwards I returned to the UK and completed my masters degree. After which I worked as a statistician at the University of Manchester. After that I returned to teaching before leaving to become a housewife. I have been a regular maths tutor since September 2003.

Tutoring Approach:
First of all I asses the students requirements and abilities and goals, either by questioning (verbally) or written assesment. I look for their weak points and aim to strengthen those before starting new topics / developing topics futher. I think it is important to foster a liking and understanding of maths and its importance in the world, this is done by encouraging the student and making sure the student fully understands a topic before moving on to the next one. I am very patient and happy to explain over and over again until the student does understand.
