| About James: I am a professional actor and have trained fully for three years at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored privately and in schools on visiting workshops specialising in Shakespeare. I have worked at RADA and have led workshops in Stanislavski, voice and audition technique. I have also been involved with the RADA auditioning process for two years now. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach tends towards treating each tutee as though they were a professional, no matter what level they might be. My background is vocational- I see a preparation for a life in the theatre as a continual learning process that isn't academic. If you are thinking about applying to drama school then I would be the right person to contact- equally if you have to give a speech, are having to perform a recitation or in any way find yourself in a quandry about a public speaking situation then I could help you. |

| About Jennifer: I have a background in Biology, having completed a degree at Manchester University in Biomedical Sciences achieving a high 2.1. Since graduating I have worked in research and published papers in both Nature Medicine and Neuron. I currently work in the Marketing department of a small and friendly scientific publisher. I have a passion and a understanding of Biology, and also the ability to teach it (I'm in marketing because I love to communicate about science). |
Teaching Experience: Although I have not yet tutored pupils on a one to one basis, many of my friends are teachers and I have recently helped organise many science activity days for their classes (primary and secondary schools). I loved doing this and I believe I helped the pupils understand science topics a little better. I have also used to work in a Nursery school as an assistant (part time) before I went to university and have a good ability with children. |
Tutoring Approach: I would have a organised and dedicated approach to tutoring - using the first session to highlight what your child needs to learn and understand in order to progress in his/her schooling. I would try to make lessons as interesting and inspiring for your children as possible and would be firm on homework if needed. |

View Patricia's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Patricia: I am a graduate in English and Linguistics by the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and I am currently living in Manchester pursuing a teaching career while studying part-time towards Masters by research qualification in Applied Linguistics. I am an enthusiastic person with a real passion for languages and linguistics that is reflected not only in my academic formation but also in my personal interest in foreign languages such as French, German and Japanese. I am always looking for new proffesional and intellectual challenges and goal setting and achieving are a must for me. I genuinely enjoy contact with students and in general with all those who show an interest in a different language and civilisation and who can play an active role in the learning process by making it a complete life-changing experience. I believe in relevant proactive teaching that involves a personal commitment of the learner to master the formal and communicative aspects of the foreign language to the same extent as the cultural. |
Teaching Experience: After finishing my degree in June 2006 I joined the department of Modern Foreign Languages of the University of Wolverhampton to work as an Spanish Language Assistant. My duties were to work independently with groups of students doing Spanish either as part of their degree or as an elective course, as well as to offer one-to-one and group tutorials and to contribute to the design of language learning materials and activities. This was a great opportunity to initiate a career as teacher of Spanish as a foreign language since I was given the chance to work freely developing my own materials, contributing to every course's curriculum by adapting my weekly lessons to the groups' particular needs and interests at the same time that I try to give the students an insight into the sociocultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries- politics, history, media, culture, etc. For this purpose I truly believe in a communicative student-centred approach to language teaching that involves the use of up-to-date authentic materials adapted to classroom use, implemented with the latest range of audiovisual devices and computing programmes when most suitable. I also have experience as casual tutor with Berlitz Manchester and as a freelance private tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: I have very vauable experience in one-to-one teaching in higher and adult education and consider myself a friendly approachable tutor who genuinely enjoys taking part in the learning process letting the learner be the protagonist and thus acting only as facilitator and support. I develope taylor-made lessons adapted to the student's needs, level and interests through which I try to enhance their linguistic skills (grammar, written and oral production and comprehension) and encourage their autonomy, working at their own pace and taking into account their individual characteristics and learning styles. |

| About Frances: I have recently graduated from Cambridge University and I'm now spending a year living in Cambridge. I want to become a teacher but not yet, as I want to gain some life experience, something I think is vital in a teacher. I am a vivacious happy person and I really enjoy life and meeting new people. I very much enjoy spending time with children and I go into help at my Mum's primary school whenever possible. I have various hobbies but mainly I like spending my time singing in choirs, sailing or on the hockey pitch. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent a good deal of time working alongside my Mum in the speech and language section of the primary school at which she works. I do not have any formal academic teaching experience but I have had both an active and passive role in the classroom when I have gone into the school. I spent two years coaching a boys Under15 hockey team whilst I was at school and gained a great deal of experience in how to motivate people to achieve their best. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that, when it comes to private tutoring, encouragement and fun are the key elements. If a private tutor is required it is perhaps because they pupil is not getting as much out of the classroom as they need. As a tutor I would try to counteract the formulaic nature of classroom lessons by approaching the work in a way that makes it interesting, appealing and good fun. Relating the work to current affairs and making connections that the younger student will understand leads to an increased interest which fosters encouragement and achievement. |

| About Honor: I am a full time housewife with two small children. I enjoy tutoring and helping someone to understand maths, which I have a lot of passion for. |
Teaching Experience: I have various teaching experience with all levels and abilities of mathematics and statistics. I started tutoring my peers at school when it became evident to my maths teacher that I was bored in class. All through university tutored maths and statistics and taught a couple of maths courses. I qualified as a teacher in 2000 and spent a year in Zambia teaching primary school. Afterwards I returned to the UK and completed my masters degree. After which I worked as a statistician at the University of Manchester. After that I returned to teaching before leaving to become a housewife. I have been a regular maths tutor since September 2003. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all I asses the students requirements and abilities and goals, either by questioning (verbally) or written assesment. I look for their weak points and aim to strengthen those before starting new topics / developing topics futher. I think it is important to foster a liking and understanding of maths and its importance in the world, this is done by encouraging the student and making sure the student fully understands a topic before moving on to the next one. I am very patient and happy to explain over and over again until the student does understand. |

| About Kirsty: I am young, friendly, enthusiastic and experienced tutor. I have lived abroad for over 5 years so I am very open minded and value diversity. I am currently completing an Msc in Community Learning and Development and enjoying it very much. As a trained artist I enjoy making and exhibiting my work in Scotland. I am a very active person, I love snowboarding and rock climbing and I think my varied interests have stood me in good stead in my experience thus far - good analogies for teaching! |
Teaching Experience: Over four years teaching Art and English as a second language in Japan - to students aged 2 to 82! In Japan I taught in both private and group settings and trained colleagues to facilitate learning. Experience of teaching business English and preparing students to sit TOEFL, IELTS and other English Language tests. In the UK I have taught art and craft in children's classes and young people art school portfolio preparation. I have extensive experience of working with children, young people and migrants in a community setting, teaching everything from global citizenship to outdoor education. |
Tutoring Approach: As an arts graduate I am extremely creative and like to apply this to my teaching. While working in Japan I set up the community centre in which I worked and created the programme and curriculum according to the expressed needs of the students; I think this is very important - to respond to what the students wish to learn. I am patient and tolerant of mistakes and attitudes, while encouraging and hopeful about progress. I am very laid back and like to have a joke - I would like to think that my students enjoy learning with me, as I have certainly enjoyed learning with them! |
