About Tayo:
My name is Tayo Richards. I am married with three children and I live in Herne Hill, which is in London. I am currently working towards my accreditation as a career/business coach. I am a very passionate believer of purpose and strongly believe that each and everyone of us has a reason for being here today. I partner with young people, professionals and business owners, helping them become more aware of their passion, motivators, natural talents and abilities in order to help them make very calculated and meaningful decisions when it comes to their careers and businesses.

Teaching Experience:

My particular experience comes from being a senior administrator in a learning and development organisation. I naturally took on the role of motivator and leader for the members of the administrative team because I was the longest serving member at the time and because I have a natural passion to see people realise their true potential in their work.

When I left this organisation, I started my own virtual business support business. I continually found that my passion was more helping business owners to see their business grow, help with pin pointing problems in strategically as well as with relation to members of staff.

In order to enhance my coaching experience, I decided to get accreditation in a very one of a kind coaching school.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach will focus on the following:

(a) First I would begin by establishing a rapport and discussing what the student would like to be left with having completed the tutorial. At this time an outline of topics to be covered will also be provided.
(b) Spend about three quarters of the tutorial time providing an insight to the subject by providing facts, insights, practical examples and insights from a personal perspective.
(c) Set 'homework' or something to go and read up on to further enhance the learning experience
(d) Spend a quarter of the tutorial time, catching up on previous taught material to ensure that the tutee understands the subject material before moving on.

About Hestia:
I'm a professional tutor and artist living and working in London. I'm as passionate about education as I am about the arts and am fascinated by the relationship between the two. Pupils can expect to find me friendly, interesting and engaging at all times.

Teaching Experience:

Three years of private tutoring with prestigious London agency The Tutor's Group.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is child-centered. I will work with your child to establish a programme suited to their needs which they can feel really empowered by and involved in. It is my belief that tuition outside of a school context can be extremely valuable to young people whatever their interests or ability. The new perspective that tuition in an environment they are comfortable in can transform their relationship with learning in and out of the classroom.

With all students I try to build a rapport based on their own interests and outlook. I keep sessions informal, aiming to instill a genuine interest in the subject at hand, allowing students to develop a strong work ethic that really means something to them. I can keep things interesting with a wide variety of inspirational activities, ranging from Origami to Mind-Mapping, encouraging the student to become aware of his or her own learning process.

I teach all subjects from Primary level to Common Entrance level and Key Stage 3 (age 14)
At GCSE I teach Maths, English and Sciences plus Drama, Art and Design and History of Art
At A level I teach Art, Art History, English and Drama.

I can provide coaching for interview and exam technique, mentoring and for those students hoping to enter Higher Education in the Arts I can provide advice and assistance in assembling a portfolio.

About Emily:
I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies. Since then, I have been living in London working as tutor and also as a box office assistant for the English National Opera. In 2006 I started a degree in costume Design at Wimbledon College of Art, due to graduate in 2009. I am a passionate lover of the arts in all forms, but particularly drama and literature. For the past three years I have been involved with a London based arts collective What They Could Do They Did , helping to organise events in London and Edinburgh.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as private tutor for three years, working with a range of ages and subjects. I specialise in english and drama but have also taught maths, science, history and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools. I also have experience working with children's drama groups and am currently working with the Lewisham Youth Theatre.

Tutoring Approach:

In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage the pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning!

About Chris:
Hello there

I am 23 and I have recently returned from Moscow where I spent a year working as a Russian-English translator and editor. I gained lots of experience over the year translating a wide variety of documents including legal contracts, stock exchange reports and real estate evaluations.

I graduated from Sheffield University in 2007 with a 1st in Russian, Spanish and Swedish and as part of my course I spent a year studying at universities in St. Petersburg and Seville.

Over years of study I have consistently achieved excellent grades and I would confidently be able to explain grammar and the techniques necessary for oral and written exams in Russian and Spanish.

My interests are varied ranging from contemporary dance to martial arts. At university I spent three years acting in a Spanish theatre group. I also enjoy doing art, reading and travelling.

Teaching Experience:

Volunteer tutoring primary school children at an after-school club in Sheffield.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very flexible and am able to adapt to meet required needs such as grammar, vocabulary or general help. I am highly organised and would be able to plan lessons effectively in order to provide the best assistance.

In my spare time I like to play different sports and enjoy socialising with friends. I use to tutor students in maths GCSE which I really enjoyed and wanted to continue.

Teaching Experience:

I previously taught maths GCSE to two students which I really enjoyed and was even more pleased to provide the service. I felt I had changed their lives, with the good results these pupils gained it had opened the door to a great amount of opportunities

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is a friendly. I like to teach the subject at the start of the lesson and then focus on solving problems together, so students can have a full understanding of the subject. A success is when I test a student and they can answer questions without referring to any text books.

About Terence:
I am a post-graduate from Kent University in Canterbury, where I am currently living. I have a keen interest in literature and cinematography and have graduated with an honours degree in English and Film Studies. I have also studied at Brighton Film School and have experience in directing short films and writing scripts on a freelance basis.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience has been informal but productive, from working volutarily with teenagers with learning difficulties, through to young men who were not able to learn about reading and writing as children.

Tutoring Approach:

I know from experience that the best and most interesting (both for tutor and tutee) method of teaching is not through rhetoric but through increasing the tutee's understanding and therefore reasoning of any given subject. I am friendly, polite and extremely patient, happy to tutor both children of a primary or secondary school age.

About Victoria:
I'm a 25 year old female tutor located in Gateshead, but willing to travel throughout the Newcastle/Gateshead area.
I have a friendly, patient and approachable manner and take a fun attitude to learning.
I have a degree in English Literature and Spanish.
I have a real passion for my subjects, and I believe this comes across in my teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently working full-time as a Skills for Life Tutor for adults in Numeracy, Literacy and English as a foreign language. In the past I have taught in both primary and secondary schools in Africa teaching English and maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I am of the opinion that learning needs to be fun and varied in order to keep the student interested and engaged. For this reason, I like to incorporate many different techniques in to my teaching, such as games and role plays, as well as more traditional methods. In my experience, I have found that a learner who enjoys a subject will have much greater success. I try to tailor my teaching to the individual learner, as I do not support a "one size fits all" attitude.

Subjects: Sociology

About Richie:
I am a 30 year old academic sociologist with a PhD in social science. Having taught in universities in recent years, I am currently taking a year out of academic employment to pursue other projects and to focus on completing a book based on my research. I am therefore very keen to work as a tutor for sociology students during this year.

As a person I am friendly, approachable and quite down to earth. It has not been such a long time since I was a student myself and I remember that at times it can be a steep learning curve. I am passionate about sociology and I very much enjoy teaching it - I aim to make it equally enjoyable for my students as well.

Teaching Experience:

I have three years direct experience of teaching sociology: For two years I was a course tutor for undergraduate students, firstly at the University of Salford and then at the University of Manchester. These roles involved teaching sociology in small interactive groups through critical discussion and analysis of key readings, concepts, themes and perspectives. I then worked as a lecturer in sociology at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. There I was responsible for preparing and delivering lectures to large groups of undergraduates and postgraduates, for the supervision of individual student research projects, and also for small group tutorial teaching.

In these roles I have gained experience of teaching students at different educational levels, from first year students in Aberdeen (who in the Scottish educational system are roughly equivalent to final year A-Level students in England), to second and third years, as well as postgraduate masters and research students. I have also taught students from very diverse backgrounds, including UK, EU, and non-EU students from all over the world, from Asia to the US. This experience has attuned me to the particular requirements of sociology students whose first language is not English. In addition I have enjoyed tutoring a number of mature students, with whom I have had some of my most rewarding teaching experiences.

In terms of topics covered, I have taught right across the sociological spectrum, from the sociology of housework to globalisation. I have particular expertise in sociological theory (classical and modern), philosophy of social science, research methods and methodologies, work and organisations, social class and social structure, historical sociology, and science, technology and society. These are my personal research interests and include some of the areas in which I have published articles, but I am very able and very happy to tutor in a wide range of sociological topics.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a flexible approach to tutoring in which I am guided by the needs of the student. This could mean for example giving very detailed feedback and suggestions on particular essays or pieces of coursework to ensure that a student attains the highest grade they can achieve, or it could mean providing more general support to a student throughout the duration of a course by explaining and clarifying key perspectives, concepts and arguments. I can also help students to prepare for examinations by supporting their revision of important or difficult topics and by suggesting the most effective strategies of exam preparation. I am happy to cater to students of all ability levels, from those who may be struggling with sociology and who wish to secure a pass mark, to those who already feel comfortable with the subject and want to take their achievement to the next level. I am particularly keen to provide online tutorial support, which in my experience can be very effective indeed, but I am also able to visit students' homes (or halls) if they prefer face-to-face tutoring.

I believe that effective teaching and learning in sociology should combine a structured approach to the material with an emphasis upon independent critical thinking. Sociology as a discipline is defined above all by its willingness to question and analyse taken for granted features of social organisation, institutions, relationships and norms. Effective learning in sociology therefore requires not just mastery of the course materials but also the ability to 'think sociologically' by asking fundamental questions about why people live the way they do. In my approach to tutoring I seek to foster this independent critical thinking, which is the key to sustained academic success in sociology.

About Noori:
I am a 27 year old female fully qualified doctor currently working in Pathology. I gained my medical degree at the University of Glasgow and also attained a BSc in Anatomical Sciences. I have a genuine interest in my subjects and thoroughly enjoy imparting my knowledge and understanding to the people I teach.
I also have research experience and have several publications in medical/scientific journals.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience stretches from tutoring siblings and family friend's children to teaching medical students and junior doctors. I have always maintained an enthusiasm for teaching and frequently volunteer my self for teaching sessions.

Tutoring Approach:

Being a Glasgow graduate, the emphasis was mainly geared towards problem based learning and this approach continues to feature in my teaching sessions.
I take a relaxed approach to teaching and promote open discussion. The use of visual aids and mind mapping, I personally find, is of great value when learning numerous facts. I, however, appreciate that every one's ability to grasp information differs and I have the flexibility to cater to different individual needs.

I have an enhanced disclosure scotland certificate.
I am free most evenings and weekends and am happy to tutor small groups if required.

About Sian:
I am a professional writer, with three books and several articles published. I write about eighteenth and nineteenth century history. I have two small children and live in central Brighton.

Teaching Experience:

Before I became a historian, I travelled a great deal and taught English and British history to children, teenagers and adults in England, Italy, Spain and Australia.

Tutoring Approach:

I think students need to be stimulated to learn, which means tapping each individual's imagination and capabilities. Compared to many teachers, I am strict - firstly because I think students will take a subject more seriously if they see their teaching being serious about it; and secondly because if you're paying for a lesson, you need to get the most out of it.
