Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online

About Rafael:
During the past 3 years I have taught both music and music technology at secondary school level, from year seven up to Advanced level. I have learned to adapt myself to the different abilities of the students, differentiating, assimilating, and adapting units of work and lesson plans that allow them to progress in accordance with the new trends of the National Curriculum. I consider the key activities in lesson plans to be composing and performing in groups. Indeed, recording and listening activities are key factors for assessing pupil's progress formatively and, what I believe is more important, for peer and self assessment. In relation with assessment I believe it is fundamental to explain and share the National Curriculum with my pupils. They should understand what it means, its implication in their educational development, how to progress within those levels and aim higher.

I have had the opportunity to develop my ICT skills and my knowledge of music technology, using ProTools, Logic Pro and Sibelius. I have also taught ICT to year 7 and citizenship to year 9 during my PGCE year. Personally, I listen to many different kinds of music, from classical music to the fusion Indian-Jazz music group "Shakti" and I believe that it is the role of the music teacher to give the students the opportunity to open up to different influences. This is of particular importance when working with students from such a diverse range backgrounds; as is the case in comprehensive schools in London. For this reason the composing and performing activities are crucial for sharing ideas, while listening activities help to improve and promote peer and self-assessment among pupils.

During my previous teaching post at St. Luke's Sixth Form College I led the music department. My duties included:

Good organizational skills and record keeping of student's progress and attendance.
Writing department schemes of work and lesson plans
Composing the student handbook and coursework deadline handbook
Creating department budget
Devising a proposal and developing a new state-of the-art recording studio in accordance to a given budget.
Organising extra-curricular activities (Choir, Trips, Charity Concerts, Courses for students)
The role of academic tutor

Last year I taught violin at Bexley Academy and very much enjoy teaching on a one to one basis. I would happily continue some peripatetic violin teaching in combination with extra curricular activities. Finally, I have a wide experience of performing. In the past two years I have played with the English Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony, Guildford Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Spain and the Orchestra of the Spanish Radio. I have also played with various string quartets and jazz bands, and attended several master classes.

Teaching Experience:

Sep 2003-Jan 2004: Violin Teacher for Lambeth Music Service (London)
Sep 2003-Sep 2005: Music KS3-5, Violin and string ensemble Director Teacher Dane Court Grammar School (
Feb 2004-June 2004: Music KS3-4 Teacher Walmer School (Kent). KS3-KS4
Sep 2004-March 2006: Violin, Chamber Music and Symphony Orchestra Director at Bexley Academy.
Sep 2004-Apr 2006: Music and Music Technology Teacher (subject leader) St Luke's 6th Form College (Sidcup). AS and A2
Sep 2006- present:Music KS3-5, Violin and Choir Director at St Mary's High School (Hendon-London)
Sep 2003-present: Private Violin, viola and piano Teacher

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that in a one-to-one environment will enable me to use my wealth of experience to inspire, instruct and guide students of all kinds, in order to maximise their musical potential. I also develop differentiated resources to cater all my students needs and learning styles.

About Malka batsheva (Melanie):
I have a BA (Hons) Archaeology degree and PGCE. I originally trained to be a primary school teacher but have mostly worked in High Schools. I currently teach GCSE History at an Orthodox Jewish Girl's High School.

I am able to teach primary boys and girls and I am only able to teach girls at High School level for religious reasons.

I am also able to teach English and literacy.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified to teach in 2003 at Manchester Metropolitan University. I have taught primary, English, Literacy (Key Stage 3) and History (Key Stages 3 and 4).

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to make the lesson material interesting, for example using PowerPoint presentations and relevant DVD film. I like to make the material as accessible as possible for the learner and instill confidence in their abilities.

History is fun and interesting and involves using analytical skills. First we learn the material and then practice exam questions and build upon the learner's knowledge. This enables the learner to progress and achieve good exam results. My lessons are visual and discursive, we analyse historical sources and look at different sides of arguments to gain a balanced understanding of history.

About Kate:
I graduated from The University of Nottingham last year where I studied French and Hispanic Studies. Since leaving university I have been travelling in South America where I perfected my Spanish skills, through getting involved with various volunteer organisations and conversing with the locals.
I am looking to start a PGCE course next September as I am very keen to start a teaching career. I love French and Spanish and think that it is important for children (and adults) to embrace languages and start thinking of them as an essential part of life!

Teaching Experience:

Home tutoring in Spain for both students and business people who wanted to improve on their english.
Home tutoring in my local area for children of all ages in both French and Spanish.
Working in a children's centre in Colombia where I was responsible for a class of 15 children. This role was particularly challenging as it was vital to maintain control within the classroom at the same time as making English fun!

Tutoring Approach:

I already have experience in home tutoring, both in my local area and in Spain during my year abroad. I pride myself on using innovative and effective methods to achieve excellent results, and with the younger children, I have always managed to keep them focused on the tasks in hand through applying a more interactive approach. Through past experience I have found that younger children work well with pictures and colour, and they especially learn at a much faster rate when they can relate to things. For example, if the class is about 'family', it can be fun for the child to draw their own family and then label it with the appropriate vocabulary.
With regards to older children and adults at both university level and beyond, I adapt to specific needs and give lessons according to those needs, whether the focus is on grammar or reading for example.
In any case, I strive to give professional, interesting and helpful classes and I have always had great feedback from students I have taught in the past.

About flavia:
My name is Flavia Day, I currently hold an LLB in law, Ba in English and a diploma in criminology. as well as being on the completion to a PhD in philosophical studies.
I have been awarded 123% in terms of I.Q testing and rank in the top 6%.
I am fluent in Italian and have written articles of various magazines.
I take education very seriously and believe each student to be unique, in need of lessons tailored to their own individual requirement, something not possible in a school class environment.
The term " I can`t" does not apply to any of my students.
I believe each of them capable of brilliancy when things are thaught according to their learning technique. These beliefs have been embedded in me from infancy, my father being a professor of classics in Oxbridge ad former examine rfor teh same establishement inclusive of Trinity college Dublin and La Sapienza.

Teaching Experience:

Since 2005, i have the sole charge of 5 children educated in a home schooled environment.
The areas I undertook to teach them, cover, English, Italian, law, criminology and mathematics.
Each of them in 2008 achieved entrance to different institutions, ranging from Eton, Trinity College Dublin, Yale and Our lady Ascot.
Furthermore, I teach 4 students on a home tutoring basis, including learning difficulties students.
I have helped on a voluntary basis in Kingsbury High School in 2003 to 2005 as a class assistant, flanking teachers in English studies and mathematics.
In terms of entrance exams into both the public and state fields I believe myself to have one further advantage above other tutors, mainly comprising in the close relations I have with senior academics who prescribe exams and mark them, this has enabled me to replicate sets of practice exam papers corresponding closely to the actual papers and marked with the same level of expectation the children will encounter when they sit the exams.

Tutoring Approach:

Each and every student, I believe is unique. In a class environment, it is virtually impossible weather this be public or state school setting, to pay individual, specially tailored attention to one student alone. This is what i make my objective with each student who crosses my path.
I take the time to see what works for that student, to tap into their unique learning pattern and use this to teach them the tools to bring about excellency in every academic path they decide to walk.
Parents and the student are never kept in the dark, there is constant collaboration , feedback as to progress and development and these are carried out with regular short intervals.

About Christian:
I am a physics graduate from Cambridge University. I have recently given up my previous job (in the finance department of a well-known film distribution company). I am now studying for a Bioinformatics masters degree, and tutoring maths in the afternoons and evenings.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring Maths privately for over a year now. I have two A-level students and five GCSE students, though I also offer tuition at the Key Stage 3 level (for 11-14 year olds)

Tutoring Approach:

Flexible and very student-oriented. The first session is free, and we would use it to discuss the student's particular requirements and difficulties, and make adaptable lesson plans.

I believe it is important not just to know HOW to do something, but also WHY it is done that way. I also believe in teaching every single topic in mathematics, within its wider context. You will not only learn dozens of different techniques, to be applied in this or that module, but you will learn how they all fit together and what their importance is in the larger maths world.

You'll get plenty of practice in past exam questions! I am also starting to put notes up on the Web, to explain key GCSE and A-level topics, and you would have unlimited access to those once you start studying with me.

I've also been a biology tutor to an A-level student for the last 2 months and am enjoying it so much that I'd like to take on more.

Tutoring Approach:

I'll look closely at your sylabus and identify exactly what you need to learn. Before any lesson we'll talk about any concepts or techniques you're finding hard to master, or any specific help you need before you can hand in a piece of work.

My tutoring technique is perfect for visual learners - people who are able to learn and remember information using pictures, colours and cue cards. Difficult concepts are also broken down into chunks so they are easier to learn and keep in your mind.

Before the end of each lesson you'll have a very short quiz to help reinforce what you've learnt. This will also show up things that either you need to work on, or that you have learnt well and should take confidence from.

You might also need help with exam technique - I can spend time helping you develop these with tailored exercises.

About William:
I currently study single honours history at the University of Glasgow, having previously studied history, politics and philosophy at university level and gaining 4 A passes at Higher level. I am entering my third year of a four year MA degree, with a view to earning an eventual doctorate in history.

I am nearly 20 years old and stay on my own in the southside of Glasgow, and I split my time between my studies and work relating to my studies (watching documentaries, reading books and articles et cetera) and more social activities, such as working out, playing football and going out to clubs.

Teaching Experience:

As a young man, I have relatively little tutoring experience, although I previously tutored a pupil studying Higher Modern Studies, and over the course of 3 months we together managed to raise her grade to a very well-deserved B.

Tutoring Approach:

I fully realise that the first thing many parents look for in tutors is a list of qualifications. I may not be able to provide as comprehensive a list of qualifications as an older tutor, but I feel I make up for that with something just as important: the ability to relate to young people.

To me, a good tutor isn't defined by how much he or she knows, but rather how they can engage and enthuse their tutee, and help them to grasp the issues surrounding the subject they are studying. The first step towards learning is to have a willing attitude. Many students who have difficulty in certain subjects feel a particular resentment towards it and find it hard to motivate themselves to study it.

I know this because I went through the same thing when studying mathematics at school, and it was only through the help of a very patient, friendly tutor that I managed to pass my maths examination.

As a younger tutor, I will perhaps be able to help a pupil by explaining and teaching a subject to them in a more relaxed, laid-back enviroment. This doesn't mean that the work will be easy, or that sessions will be lazily-planned, it means simply that I will treat the pupil as an equal, and teach them in a different way than perhaps they would learn in a classroom. Whilst school is undoubtedly a hugely influencial and important part of a pupil's learning experience, it seems to follow that if they are having problems with a subject, then the teaching style they are receiving at school is not beneficial to them, and that a different approach is needed.

I understand that as a parent or guardian, you have your child's best interests at heart and that picking a tutor is an important decision which is not to be taken lightly. I am therefore willing to offer my first session for free, in order to allow the parents and the pupil to assess my abilities as a tutor in a manner which will cost them no money.

About Vijay:
"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" - Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir - The Sign of Four

Which words catch your attention the most in the above quote? - Words "Impossible" and "Improbable" of course. These two words are by far the most strongest ever words that rule the world of possibilities and probabilities. Our day to day life revolves around these words, yet we stay quite unaware of them. We are pursuing the "Truth" behind every material, immaterial entity that we come across.

Even I'm a crusader in voyage of conquering the unknown. Well I had this knack of revealing the unveiled face since infancy. Though I believe Impossible and Improbable lures around, but my fight with them prevails. Every time I face such a situation, I find myself to win it out. Might be 'cause I know what the result will be. Might sound optimistic, but that's how I'm. I graduated in Bachelor of Computer Science and Engineering (1998), also did MBA from Middlesex University (2005) . I have worked in Investment Banks as Business Manager, Project Manager, IT developer & Business Analyst.

Teaching Experience:

Since childhood I always liked Maths, Science and IT subjects. All modern advancements (computers, mobiles, wireless, internet, digital TV, emails) are gifts from these subjects. I always wanted to be in touch with the concepts. The only way I could find was to teach 11-16year old friends. I have taught GCSE level, A level students. They have achieved good scores in their results. I get personal achievement through their achievements.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe everyone is different (just like the fingers in your hand). I also believe in structure. Hence I prefer to adapt a study structure as per the individuals needs. At the same time I don't stick to routine, I prefer to work out what suits best with the individual. To me Learning shouldn't be a chore, one should enjoy learning.

Tutoring Approach:

I do see teaching a dual interaction where one person helps to reenginner the mind of other snd helps to person to rediscover his/her self potential. In tutoring you are abkle to diagnose the student and be able to understand the needs of the person better thus you can help better. I am a person who cna go down the level of the student and can adjust myself to various needs of the students depending of their personalities. i like to see the progress and be able to help students overcome difficulties mutually.

About Hafsa:
I am a third year Pharmacy student at Keele University. I am a outgoing, friendly person with the ability to help people become motivated and passionate about what they do. I am only available in the Walsall area during the summer holidays, and during term time I tutor in the Newcastle-under-lyme/ Stoke on Trent area.

Teaching Experience:

I do not have specific teaching qualification. However, I have mentored students before helping them to understand the core subjects of Maths, English and Science. I have also been a mentor for English for children with social disorders. I also tutor my younger sister in preparation for her 11+ exam as I went through the process myself and so can relate to it. My older sister is also a teacher and so I have learnt many things from reading her reports and lesson plans.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to tutor to the students needs so I adapt to whether they are a visual, audio or kinesthetic learner. I use textbooks, materials around me, and relate things to the real world to make the concept easier to grasp. I also would like to keep a clear record and set homework so work can be reviewed and weaknesses can be highlighted and dealt with straightaway. I am happy to consult with parents/guardians before or after each session to review progress.
