Martin - Surbiton tutor
Information About Martin:
Personal Description:
I went to Cambridge to do a Maths degree with Management Studies in my final year in order to gain an understanding of how Maths could be applied in a business context. I stayed on to gain my PGCE. I taught for 12 years and then moved, initially as a trainer, into IT where I have worked in a number of software companies, large and small. For much of this time I have been a manager of technical professionals and software architects.
I live in Surbiton, am married to a teacher and we have two children both in further education.
Teaching Experience:
I taught in the London area for 12 years, the first 3 years in a grammar school and later in a comprehensive where I became Head of Department and introduced Computer Studies to the school when the subject was in its infancy. I was an examiner for several years in A-level Applied Mathematics. Through helping both my children to As in their Maths GCSE and A-levels and also just being in the same house as them, I have a good understanding of the demands on today's students.
I started tutoring on retirement from industry in 2012 and have since helped a range of people from someone who was struggling with GCGE via many A-level students to a woman needing with help with a Statistics module in her Psychology MA. One year 13 was doing Further Maths, but her school had only been able to fit in one evening lesson per week. After her results, she posted: "Never would have been able to get my A* in Further Maths A2 without his help! Had loads of good methods for doing things and showed me the relevance of what I was learning. This helped me to remember it and apply it in unfamiliar questions. Most of all he reminded me that Maths is fun! Thank you very much."
Tutoring Approach:
I love Maths and I like to make that passion infectious. Irrespective of age and ability, through coaching, I aim to create a virtuous circle where confidence brings success which then brings enjoyment. At the same time, what used to be confusing becomes clearer and simpler.
I am good at assessing my tutees' strengths and weaknesses and creating a personal plan which builds confidence and stretches ability.
I will travel to your home for lessons. For economic reasons, I have to charge an extra £5 per lesson for distances over 5 miles.
** Currently I am almost completely booked up. However, I will try to squeeze in anyone who needs help with a higher qualification such as Further Maths **
