Matthew - Upper Holloway tutor
Information About Matthew:
Personal Description:
I am passionate about mathematics, physics, philosophy, English and education in general. Knowledge is liberating and these subjects especially open many doors. Mathematics, physics, philosophy and English are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.
I am a first year PhD student in mathematical physics and the philosophy of physics at the University of Cambridge studying quantum computing. However, I am in London Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week. I am also very enthusiastic about literature and creative writing and I am in the process of writing my first novel.
Why is tutoring important to me? Firstly, I feel it is my responsibility to pass on the knowledge and skills I have attained; secondly, I find it satisfying to help others learn and achieve what they did not think possible; and finally, I think one of the best ways to assess your own understanding of a subject is to teach it; we learn the most about our areas of expertise when we try convey their concepts and methods to an audience.
Teaching Experience:
I have tutored many (tens of) students privately over the past three years, improving their results in all cases; have experience of teaching children as young as five through to undergraduates; and am happy to work one to one, in small groups or in a classroom.
Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring includes:
- free initial consultation with needs assessment and lesson
- encouragement of free thinking
- varying teaching methods depending on what the student is most receptive to including: problem based learning, discourse, traditional exercises, experiments, lectures
- exam preparation
- confidence building
- resolution of conceptual difficulties
- helping with homework
- homework marking
- undergraduate and postgraduate application advice
- interview advice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- email contact throughout the week to resolve your problems as an when they arise
- group tuition
Please note (a) while I am based in Hackney, I will cover central and South London; (b) I can offer reductions for group sessions.
