Information About Nadia:

Personal Description:

Hi! I'm Nadia. I'm a British polyglot (bilingual English-French) who has lived in many places around the world. I'm currently living in Lisbon and tutoring languages and art online. With skills in coaching and motivation and how to make learning fun, I'm a great choice for learning and improving language skills. I have a degree in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Manchester, and I've lived in Spain, South America, Andorra and France.

I've been through the UK schooling system and completed GCSEs and A-levels in Spanish and French and have a thorough understanding of the systems and what is needed to get top marks. More than this though, I understand what is fundamentally important to learning a language, motivation and practice! I try and create lessons that are immersive, that require the student to guess and fail and try again, that involve games and that create problems for us to solve together.

Outside of teaching languages I am a multi-disciplinary with skills in skiing, art, music, coaching, immersive experiences and working with adults who have learning disabilities. I'm also a huge fan of co-learning initiatives and have taken part in various in the last couple of years, exploring themes of music, community and hosting/facilitating.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring languages on and off for the last 10 years. I find that an approach that gives the student a real reason and motivation to learn the language is fundamental to continued improvement. In my lessons I try and immerse the student as much as possible through conversations in the target language, games, problem-solving, listening to the target language through video clips and recording, and encouraging guessing and failing to learn from our mistakes. (I have a whole arsenal of tools so rest assured there will be a combination that works for you!)

I also have experience teaching English as a foreign language in Brazil and online, as well as being a skiing instructor for many years and working with people from a whole range of nationalities.

Tutoring Approach:

GCSE/A-LEVEL languages:

My approach can vary depending on the needs and wants of the student. Generally I would start by assessing strengths and weaknesses and starting from here. If the student is currently studying at school then I will try to mirror the curriculum rhythm in order to really cement what the student is learning (although if there are big gaps or the student is behind then I will focus on bridging this gap). I will also try to tap into what the student is really motivated by to try and encourage their own curiosity in learning the language.

I would encourage young students to join up in groups of 2-3 to make the learning more interactive. I can involve more games and competitive aspects to the lesson this way and it may feel less like a 'chore'. This is really dependent on the student of course!
With 2 students per class I charge £25 per hour and with 3 students per class I charge £30 per hour. So it is better value for money when joining up with other students.

English as a foreign language:

I like to make things fun, relevant and interactive. I will tailor the lessons to suit the interests and needs of the student; this may involve listening to music in the target language, reading texts, games, exercises. I have a whole toolbox at the ready to help create lessons that will work for you. I will always try and give you reasons to speak as much of the target language as possible as this really is the key to improving.

Spanish and French for adults:

I know what it is like to learn a foreign language and the frustrations at not being able to communicate the things you want to communicate! And this frustration is the key to getting motivated to learn, so I will expose you many scenarios (role-plays, games, video-clips, texts) and we will problem solve them together! Learning this way is the closest thing to a young child learning and gives you a solid and practical use of the language that you can use straight away in situations that will be of great importance if travelling to the target country or even moving there! I like to make lessons immersive, relevant and interactive. I believe immersion in the target language and practice speaking to be two of the key elements to moving forward with learning a foreign language.
