Personal Description:
I have been teaching for 12 years in a variety of educational settings in Further Education, Adult Education and working in Primary schools delivering courses to children and parents. I am currently up to date with primary school methods of teaching English and Mathematics - the latter has changed significantly over the years and parents may find methodology different to their own learnt methods which can cause problems when helping their children with homework.

I have a friendly approach, and encourage learning in a safe environment that enables learners to feel happy and stimulated to learn. But I still expect learners to work hard for me and complete homework when given it. I am a mature person, reliable and punctual, and interested in my students progress in their subjects. I have been so happy over this past year with exam results, raises in grades and the positive feedback from pupils and their parents.

I have been teaching since 1999, and have a varied experience due to working in larger colleges and smaller learning establishments. I have worked in Adult and Further Education teaching English and Mathematics, and also have worked with youth offenders.

I started private tutoring in 2011, and found it a rewarding and enjoyable form of teaching. I find it best to discuss with the students their learning needs, then create an 'Individual Learning Plan' with targets we can work towards. I do like to encourage learners to do their best, learn through doing and working out answers. Not so much focusing on 'wrong' answers - but the process of getting there - and realising where problems lie. Then we can remove the misunderstandings and misconceptions that lose them marks (especially with mathematics) and make new connections that enable learners to produce the 'right' answers.

I use all forms of learning through not just text books - but through games of mental maths or spelling, interactive work (if pc supplied in learners house) & help with school set 'mymaths' site, 'doing tasks' from counting money to making maths drawing with isometric paper and many more methods that stimulate a learner to make long term deep memory learning.

Students can feel in control of their learning, and see their progress in their Individual Learning Plans which can be shown to parents and adapted to suit the needs of the learner, either in long term courses or short intensive sets of lessons.

GCSE's

Jack's mock results were an E in English Language as well as a D in literature and he wanted to do Economics A level which required a B grade in his final GCSE. Jack had two hours of tuition per week from January to May. He enjoyed going (this surprised me as he hated English before the sessions) and had a new found likeness for literacy. He received a B in both language and literature and can now do A level economics. Jack related very well to David- this made learning easier for Jack and he obtained the grades he needed. His teachers at school noticed a marked improvement in his work when he was having tuition.

Oliver was falling behind in Math's and English. I am very happy to say that his confidence and his ability to retain what David teaches him has improved greatly. I am a fully qualified registered primary school teacher. I have been teaching for 18 years as a key stage 2 teacher. I am also foundation trained.

I have taught all subjects across the curriculum. I specialise in Maths and English. I am experienced in teaching children with a range of different learning abilities and confidence issues and have taught children who have additional learning needs.

I am able to encourage children to become more confident with their school work by explaining how to complete tasks using different strategies. Welcome to my Page! I'm Tyrone. I'm glad you're here. Education can transform lives, and teachers help facilitate this. I speak from personal experience about this. My teachers did not see an academic career for me at school - and they did very little to help me change this. I was considered a low achiever and expected to be a plumber like my father. There is nothing wrong with plumbing; it just wasn't for me. If you've read this far, I hope you will continue as I map out my journey.

I left school with a list of low-grade GCSEs and 1 A-Level - yes, it was Biology! I had no hope of going to university with these grades, so I got my first job testing soil samples. Still determined to study science at university, I enrolled on several open university (OU) courses. I did well on the OU, which allowed me to study Immunology at King's College, London. I did this after spending three years as a medical laboratory assistant in the NHS, my second job.

After graduating from King's with a BSc degree and a fascination with cancer biology, I joined Newcastle University. I spent the next four years researching anti-cancer drugs' effects on DNA. I successfully developed novel ways to measure the level of anti-cancer drugs stuck to DNA. It was a great day when the Royal Society of Chemistry published my work. The Royal Society of Biology rewarded my academic and research experience with the Chartered Biologist status. Charted Biologist is the recognition of professional competence.

On returning home to Wales, I had my first taste of teaching 16 to 19-year-olds - and I loved it. However, teaching at Bridgend College was only for maternity cover, and my contract soon ended. My next position was with Loreal (yes, I am worth It) as a microbiologist. Loreal was great as it was a weekend position and allowed me to teach part-time at Gower College Swansea during the week.

I have spent the last 17 years teaching A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea full time. During this time, I qualified as a teacher from the University of Wales with a PGCE. The Biology department is highly successful and renowned. The department has a 100% pass rate and grades well above the national average. I learned so much here about helping people with their education. It was where I saw firsthand how a teacher could facilitate the real transformational effects of education. Teachers and tutors may seem unnecessary nowadays because of Google and AI. The most valuable thing a teacher can do for their students is to teach them thinking skills. Students must analyse the information in questions to achieve high grades in A-Level Biology exams. It's not just about memorising facts like what Google and AI can provide; it's about understanding the underlying concepts. This, and other areas, is where I can offer my professional assistance.

To provide effective help, I customise my approach for each student. I communicate with students and their parents to identify the areas that need attention and create an initial plan for improvement. These plans are regularly reviewed to ensure they continue to address the student's specific needs. I monitor students' progress using questions, tests, and activities, making adjustments as necessary to keep them on track. I keep parents up to date with their son/daughter's progress.

This skill is vital for writing precise answers needed at A-Level. It can be challenging for students to develop this level of precision, often causing frustration. Consistent Study Habits:
I emphasise the importance of consistency in studying to all my students. Even with ample assistance, improvement can be limited without personal dedication and regularity in studying biology. Transitioning from GCSE to A-Level Biology can be overwhelming for students due to the abundance of new concepts, words, and facts. This transition is often referred to as the "big step up." Students may feel confused, frustrated, and disappointed when progress seems lacking or test results are unsatisfactory.

I teach my students that progress occurs incrementally through consistent effort and active learning strategies. With my guidance, their efforts will compound, leading to rapid advancement. This approach makes the learning process more enjoyable and less stressful. I focus on establishing solid foundations, good study habits, and providing support.

Embracing Failure and Mistakes:

My name is Stacey and I am passionate about books! I love reading and all things Literature. It is not surprise that I am a secondary English teacher! Outside of teaching my time is spent enjoying life with my wonderful 8-year-old and spending as much time outside as is possible.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching secondary English for over 10 years and have experience of working with students of all abilities and needs. I am currently in my seventh year at a school that is consistently ranked in the top 10 in Surrey.
I currently teach AQA GCSE English Literature & Language, AQA A-Level English Literature, and AQA A-Level English Language. I have also examined for AQA GCSE English Literature for the last seven years.
I am confident in delivering both content and skills for the AQA specification and am happy to consider tutoring for other exam boards depending on the texts required.
I am also the lead teacher for Key Stage 3 English at my school and have extensive experience working with this age group.
