I am a highly experienced multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. I have performed in a number of ensembles, playing a wide variety of music, including classical, pop, jazz, folk, and Southern African music. I have composed and arranged over 2000 pieces, mostly for educational ensembles. I have a BA honours degree in Performing Arts (majoring in music) and a PGCE Music teaching qualification.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a classroom music teacher for over 25 years - 23 of them as a highly successful head of department at Bradfield Secondary School in Sheffield. I have taught GCSE and A Level music, and my students have consistently achieved well above the national average. I have also organised a large number of concerts, shows, and festivals. I was Classic FM's inaugural Music Teacher of the Year in 1999.

Tutoring Approach:
I have an inclusive approach to music education, encouraging all students, regardless of ability, to fulfil their potential. I consider it vital that students enjoy making music and I always make sure that their learning is tailored to their musical interests and educational needs. In terms of instrumental lessons I am happy for students to progress through graded exams but I am equally happy to design a progressive route that avoids the potential stress of formal assessment.

Aishia Diment - Leeds University

When Aishia first came to me, she was studying Chinese as an undergraduate at the University of Leeds and was considering withdrawing from her degree during her first year. She had lost confidence in her language abilities and was extremely anxious about her upcoming January examinations.

Through one-to-one tuition, I helped her rebuild her confidence and establish a strong foundation in Chinese from the ground up. After just six months of studying with me, she achieved a 2:1 in her January examinations and went on to achieve a First in her end-of-year examinations.

Throughout her four years of study at the University of Leeds, including her year abroad in Taiwan, I continued to provide ongoing guidance, encouragement, and academic support. Riazat Butt - Journalist

Riazat Butt, a journalist, planned to spend some time living in Taiwan and wished to enrol in a Chinese language course while she was there. However, to gain admission, she first needed to pass an entry examination despite having no prior knowledge of Chinese.

She contacted me for support, and we began an intensive learning programme. Just three weeks later, she took a Chinese proficiency test and achieved a mid-novice level. Other Professional Experience

Over the past ten years, I have continued to develop my professional skills beyond the classroom. During this period, I took a short break from teaching and worked for a UK-based international company as a translator and Chinese Business Development Manager.

In this role, I successfully supported the company's expansion into the Chinese market by establishing a Beijing representative office, developing and implementing brand promotion strategies in China, negotiating business agreements with Chinese partners, and advising company staff on Chinese business culture and etiquette. This experience gave me valuable insights into international business communication and cross-cultural collaboration.

I Use a Variety of Teaching Skills and Techniques to Meet Individual Needs

Every learner is unique and acquires knowledge in different ways. Therefore, I adapt my teaching strategies and techniques to suit each student's individual needs.

To illustrate my approach, I broadly categorise learners into two groups: children and adults.

Children generally have shorter attention spans but are naturally attracted to games, stories, songs, and rhymes. Therefore, I incorporate a wide range of interactive activities into my lessons. This enables vocabulary and sentence patterns to be acquired more easily and naturally while keeping children fully focused and engaged. Colourful flashcards are both enjoyable and highly effective learning tools. After providing guidance and demonstrations, I encourage young learners to create their own phrases and simple sentences creatively. To keep adult learners motivated and inspired, I encourage them to take an active role in the learning process. Once they have understood the key concepts and language points, I engage them in a variety of thinking and communication activities. I hold a First-Class BA Hons degree in English and graduated as a mature student whilst raising three children and working part time. I formerly taught English as a Foreign Language, and have a Diploma in this area of teaching (DELTA), so can offer EFL to adults or children. This includes English conversation, pronunciation and help with proof-reading.
