I am a certified teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language. In May 2012 I finished the Master de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y Bachillerato, FP y Enseñanza de Idiomas in Spain, a program similar to a PGCE. As a language teacher I firmly believe that in order for the students to succeed, two things must be present in the classroom environment: trust and respect. I have a lot of experience as a language student, Spanish is my native tongue and I have learned English, German and a bit of French and I have struggled with that first phrase I wanted to say out loud thinking that I was going to make a mistake or that it was going to sound funny. I understand that not everyone learns a language at the same rate and speaking in a foreign language takes courage and self-confidence. Courage and self-confidence are supported by an environment of trust and respect. In my classroom there are always ground rules: we are all here to learn, we learn from each other and we must respect each other.

The other very important aspect for me is making sure that the level of proficiency is correctly assessed. If the classes are too challenging or too basic, a negative environment not conducive to learning is created. Even if proper evaluation is made before the groups are formed, there will always be differences inside the classroom. I, as a teacher, try to be as aware as possible of this factor and strive to use that for the good of the group. Pairing a strong student with someone not as strong usually helps. Another important issue that I try to be as aware as possible is preventing the strong students from taking over the exercises and leaving behind other students that, because of either lack of confidence or not being at the same level, stop themselves from actively participating in class. In my classes, I make sure that everyone is heard and that I can evaluate progress of all my students.

Tutoring Approach:
Lessons are individually planned rather than based on a fixed course. The starting point is always the student's current level, their goals and the areas that are limiting their progress.

For GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level and IB students, this normally means combining exam technique with targeted work on grammar, vocabulary, accuracy and communication. For example, a student preparing for an A-Level speaking examination may need speaking practice, but also more accurate grammar, stronger vocabulary and a wider range of structures.

Adult lessons are adapted in the same way. Some students want a clearer understanding of grammar, while others are more interested in conversation, travel or using Spanish professionally.

All students have access to an individual shared online document containing lesson notes, vocabulary, grammar explanations, exercises, corrections, homework and additional resources. This provides a clear record of progress and makes revision easier between lessons.

Lessons take place online using Google Meet and shared Google Docs. I provide the teaching materials, so students do not normally need to purchase a textbook or subscription.

I place particular emphasis on clear explanations. Rather than simply correcting mistakes, I help students understand why an error has occurred and how to avoid it in future.

For school students, I am also happy to communicate with parents when appropriate and provide feedback on progress and areas that require further attention.

A laptop or desktop computer is recommended for lessons.

Cancellation Policy

As tutoring is my full-time profession and lesson times are reserved specifically for each student, I operate a 48-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice are normally charged in full. Wherever possible, I am happy to accommodate changes when sufficient notice is provided.

Hello, I'm Freya - I am a passionate and dedicated Modern Foreign Languages teacher with a PGCE (Distinction) in Spanish and French from the University of Oxford and an MA in Italian and Spanish from the University of St Andrews.

At KS5, I put focus on language becoming a tool to analyse societal issues, culture, literature and film. I have created an in-depth study guide for Como agua para chocolate with a strict step-by-step approach to tackling a high-levelled critical analysis essay. I have been the A-Level speaking examiner for Spanish students in my school, so I am knowledgeable on the mark scheme and requirements for high grades.

I am a television producer who is currently looking to build upon the work I have previously done in education. I enjoyed school and learning, but I realise that I was fortunate enough to experience an ideal set of circumstances (including good teaching) and that many people find studying difficult, challenging and/or unenjoyable.

I really love working with people to plug the gaps in their knowledge and/or formal education, and I take a person-centred approach to finding what's right for each particular individual. As a TV producer, I have worked around the world with a multitude of different types of people, and I pride myself on the ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life. I am half Spanish, so have always had a knowledge of and been surrounded by the language. I am currently working on perfecting my fluency, so am working through the formal qualifications this year, currently operating at Pre-Advanced (B2). At this level, I am more than equipped to tutor in Spanish up to A Level.

Teaching Experience:
I trained in dance from the age of 3, and when I was about 13/14, started helping with the teaching of the younger children at the school. This was where I discovered my passion for helping others to learn. I took a huge amount of pleasure in helping people figure out a way to finally crack something they'd been finding difficult.

When I then went to uni, I spent my spare time working at Salford Young People's University to lead marketing and radio production workshops, amongst others. Upon leaving education, whilst trying to start my career as a television producer, I worked part time in a local high school as an administrative assistant, exam invigilator and cover support officer, covering classes when teachers were absent. Having obtained majority A grades at school myself, I found a great deal of joy working across all national curriculum subjects to help students complete their work and understand things that they were finding tricky.

Over the last decade, I have spent a great deal of time outside of my day job leading workshops in schools, universities and other teaching organisations to inform, educate and empower young people to pursue a career in television. I have also mentored upwards of 80 individuals, each time taking a person-centred approach to figure out what is right for that particular person. My name is Ella and I am Head of Spanish in a leading Independent School in Cardiff.

I have taught both French and Spanish to A Level for 10 years, and have experience teaching WJEC, AQA and Edexcel specifications.
