As Senior Teacher/ Teacher in Charge, of a Medical Pupil Referral Unit I headed up a dedicated team of skilled teachers who worked with young people on a 1:1 and small group basis. Hello, I am a well qualified, BA, MPhil, PGCE teacher who is looking to branch out into more private tutoring work. I have privately tutored for many years and have experience since 1996. I am now a published author, and split my time between writing novels and tutoring. I have been tutoring for over ten years and have worked with lots of students of all ages. Many of my students have worked with me through the transition from primary to secondary school, or through their GCSEs and on into their A Levels. When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:
My experience of tutoring has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

I have a BA Honours Degree in English Studies from Aleppo University in Syria in 2000. I embarked on two Postgraduate Diplomas at Aleppo University one in Linguistics (2002); the other in Education and Qualification in 2003. In both of these Diplomas I was awarded a Distinction. In 2002, I was fortunate in gaining a scholarship to study in the UK and was nominated to study in the department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. I found this course to be immensely useful to me as a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) professional as I was able to observe a range of different EAP (English for Academic Purposes)classrooms; make academic presentations and really developed my love of scholarship which fired me with the enthusiasm to read for a PhD degree. I finished my doctorate in TESOL at the University of Ulster entitled "EAP Teachers Approaches to Giving Written Feedback on Academic Writing in British and Syrian ELT Centres". . I am extremely interested in teaching the language skills (as my recent doctorate shows). I am extremely hard working and sociable. I have good comparative knowledge of Western and Islamic societies which I could share with students where pertinent. It is the application of an integrating approach for the development of communicative skills in the lesson, in which the four skills in the acquisition of knowledge of a foreign language can be taught in a coherent way, and practiced together, with a distinction of the importance of one upon the other. One image for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) is that of a tapestry. The tapestry is woven from many strands, such as the characteristics of the teacher, the learner, the setting, and the relevant languages (i.e., English and the native languages of the learners and the teacher). For the instructional loom to produce a large, strong, beautiful, colorful tapestry, all of these strands must be interwoven in positive ways. My approach to tutoring for exams is to focus specificly on the paper that the student is sitting. The content, how to answer exam questions, memory techniques, revision tips, taking into account all learner styles.


I love Psychology, Health & Social Care and Childcare and Education and really enjoy teaching these subjects so my enthusiasm motivates my students. I typically teach within schools but tutor one to one and also small groups either face to face or electronically. My teaching methodology tends to focus upon the needs of the student/s but would always begin with gaining an understanding of the students current knowledge and any gaps in learning. This ensures they are completely up to date on their understanding of the subject. I work in line with the current specification of what the student is learning and revising for or creating coursework for. I set work for students each session to complete for the following session and give them feedback to ensure they are progressing each time. This is measurable and graded. I also look at tasks they have been set by their school/college and support them with planning so they fully understand the requirements that are needed to gain the best grades they can achieve. I ensure I am available throughout the week with some online support via email and can be contacted via skype also at an additional cost.

Study skills tutoring: I provide this as an agreed package where I am your child's 'exam buddy' for a period of time. This involves me supporting your child through a stressful time in their lives. I help them to plan their time and create revision timetables, plans, resources and so on. I would check in with them on agreed days/ times via skype to see how they are doing with their studies and revision on the lead up to exams and assessments and help to support them through this. I provide this for students working towards any assessments such as 11+, GCSE's A'Levels and any other level 2 or 3 courses. This is a holistic educational support service for a fixed period. My Pug 'Tiggy' often joins in with the skype for younger students which can support them in keeping it fun and interesting and help them to stay on target. I also include anti-stress resources, stress busting techniques, basic mindfulness skills, breaking down stress barriers worksheets, tips and discussions. The study skills/ exam buddy package is charged at a rate dependent upon requirements.

Hello!! My name is James and I am currently doing an undergraduate degree in Applied Linguistics with Teaching English as a Secondary or Other Language.
Once I have completed this degree I will be starting a masters in TESOL with a focus on second language acquisition.

As well as this degree, I have also completed a CELTA qualification as well as an accredited 120 hour TEFL qualification.

I am currently a graduate student in Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. As a curious and driven learner, I am eager to teach what I have learned, as well as learn from those I teach.
I specialise in teaching Biology, Math and English until GCSE level, and as a fluent speaker of Mandarin I am also able to teach the language to younger students. I am able to teach both GCSE and those working towards the International Baccalaureate (IB). Scored 42 points doing the IB in Singapore myself, having done Higher Level Maths, Chemistry and my favourite- Biology. I was a Triple Science (I)GCSE student, scoring above 90 in all subjects, and tutored 2 IGCSE students myself as a Senior in high school. As a university newspaper editor and columnist, I love to write and communicate science, therefore am inclined towards teaching the sciences and English, but am also open to teach Maths, Chemistry and Mandarin.
