I'm a qualified science teacher and Head of Science based in London, who currently teaches in a secondary school to students aged 11-18. I teach all sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) to KS3 and GCSE (Edexcel and AQA specification), and teach A-Level Biology (OCR specification). I like finding out how the world around me works, and am keen to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others. I also enjoy making or tinkering with things - I have customised a button accordion to play bass notes more flexibly, and have added extra buttons to video game controllers. In school I designed and constructed a solar-powered light of adjustable brightness. Patterns appeal to me. When I am not involved in science, I do Scottish Country Dancing, as well as many other genres of folk dancing with intricate symmetrical dance figures. My study of several languages, including Latin and German, allows me to identify parts of scientific terms that I can use to help my students understand them - for instance a recently discovered non-repeating tile is named Einstein not after the physicist but because only one ('ein') type of tile or stone ('stein') is needed to make the pattern. I find Richard Feynman inspiring. He himself got into science through tinkering and discussions with his father about how things worked. He spoke on beauty in nature, and that scientific understanding only enhances its appreciation - as well as seeing the beauty of a flower, a scientist can also wonder at its smaller structure, and how it developed to attract insects to pollinate it. What does this tell us about how bees see the world?

I have three years' experience conducting tutorials in Materials Science at Cambridge University, having myself studied Natural Sciences there, including Physics and Chemistry. In addition to the course material provided by the university and my own worked solutions to the problems, I used physical models in the teaching that I had made myself.

In 2018, I taught the Maths and Physics component of the NCC International Foundation Programme for Engineers (of around GCSE/A-level level) at the Star Exeter language school.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that the most efficient and rewarding way to learn is through understanding. Gaining deep understanding of the underlying physical and/or mathematical concepts, is key to tackling higher level questions. Understanding just one concept can make pages of your textbooks seem trivial. I will therefore try and identify and fix gaps in your knowledge and understanding. By doing this I aim to minimize that amount which you're required to memorize before an exam. I think that learning a subject by rigorous memorization is mind numbingly dull and is the best way to kill a passion.

Many people will not fulfil their potential due to fear of asking questions which they perceive as 'stupid'. I encourage you to ask me ridiculous and stupid questions.

A level exam boards have a tendency to ask very similar questions and even repeat exam questions from year to year. We will therefore spend lots of time looking at exam questions and the way in which they're marked to maximise the marks you can pick up.

I like to provide detailed feedback for my students by sending you a copy of your specification with the content we have covered highlighted red amber green after each session.

Hello to all prospective students. My name is Mark and I have been teaching secondary level Science and maths for over 10 years. I am personally passionate about learning and endeavour to ignite the same love of learning in each student that I teach.

I have loved science and maths from a young age and went on to pursue a degree in biomedical sciences, prior to my secondary teacher training. I hope to continue to work with young people to help them realise their own goals in the fields of science and engineering.

Outside the classroom I am an avid musician and play guitar to grade 6 as well as writing and recording my own songs. I love to listen to audiobooks about ancient history and geopolitics, often whilst on a long walk in the countryside. I also like to play some sports and swim occasionally.

Teaching Experience:
I am currently working across a multitude of schools in the North East of England for CER education resourcing. I have also worked as a science teacher for an outstanding rated academy, where I was personally graded outstanding as a teaching professional.

Throughout my career as a KS3/KS4 science teacher, I have taught and marked material for both AQA and EdExcel exam boards, which has given me an in depth knowledge of their expectations when it comes to GCSE exam preparations.

In recent years, I have also enjoyed teaching maths to key stage 3 across a variety of schools. As there are many mathematical principles which must also be applied to the sciences, teaching mathematics has helped me to develop teaching skills in both of these areas.

My initial goal whilst tutoring will be to assess a pupils abilities in each aspect of the subject, before moving on to anything specific. The logic behind this method of tutoring is to fill in any small gaps in basic subject knowledge so the students have a strong foundation with which to build on.
