I have just finished a PhD in maths at Newcastle University so it goes without saying I'm enthusiastic about both maths and physics. On top of this I have a wide variety of interests, and this allows me to find ways of explaining things that the people I'm tutoring can relate to.

I have a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics and its Applications from the University of Sussex. Maths is one of the hardest subjects to bluff your way through, and although it's possible to scrape by with a passing acquaintance of the concepts involved, you will never do particularly well without a deeper understanding of the subject. However, this shouldn't be taken as a cause for despair - far from it! With a proper understanding of the subject, a real empathy with the "why" rather than the "how", mathematics not only becomes far more interesting but also easier. I have several years of recent experience of teaching A level Maths, Further Maths and Physics at a school in the south of England. I am a PGCE trained science teacher and I have spent 1 year teaching in a secondary school where I was able to teach all science subjects to GCSE students. I ran an after school science club to a group of students who were wanting additional support. I have spent the past 1.5 years lecturing at Buxton College to T-Level and BTEC students, teaching both Biology and Chemistry to level 3 and 4 students plus healthcare units. I have also been private tutoring for the past 10 months in the evenings.

Tutoring Approach:
I will first start by gauging my students abilities, strengths and weaknesses. I will then develop a personalised plan for each student so that we can develop areas of weakness and build upon their core strengths. I have a very relaxed style and realise that students learn better when they are engaged and interested in he content. Hello! I am fully qualified to teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths up to GCSE, as well as Biology to A level. If your child needs extra help understanding concepts, catching up with work missed or with exam technique, I can help.

Let's have a chat about how your child is getting on at school, how they learn and what they are struggling with. If they are feeling overwhelmed and confused I can help them get clarity and regain control over their school work. I know the curriculum really well and can identify where they have gaps in their knowledge and target those areas. I will reinforce the fundamental principles in cases where basic learning has been forgotten or missed.

I will tailor my lessons strategically so that the greatest achievement is managed in the shortest space of time. If your child has been attending school regularly, they often know way more than they realise, sometimes all they lack is clarity, practice and confidence. If your child has missed school through illness I can help them catch up. I am happy to help home-schoolers and can do various home-based science experiments to encourage engagement. Depending on your individual circumstances and what is best for your child I can arrange lessons before exams or during holidays. Oftentimes a block of six lessons, arranged weekly, is enough to get a child back on track and working without my help.

Teaching Experience:
I was awarded my PGCE in Secondary Science in 1997 with Qualified Teacher Status from Sussex University. Since then I have taught in various schools in Sussex, Essex and Bristol. I have experience with all ages and abilities at key stage 2,3 and 4.

In addition, I spent several years teaching English, History, Drama, Art+Design, Citizenship, ICT as well as Science and Maths to my tutor group as part of a year 7 Team and would be happy to help younger children generally with anything educational.

I have also taught A Level Biology both as a private tutor and at a higher education college.

I have been an examiner for AQA Biology.

Tutoring Approach:
During our lesson I would utilise a variety of different teaching tools to aid recall and stimulate brain cells: starter activities, subject games, exam questions, scientific writing, calculator practice, sequencing and comprehension activities. I will utilise the textbooks and revision guides that the student prefers.

Generally I would use examples, graphs, charts, tables, data and diagrams to encourage deeper thinking and improve skills and vocabulary. I would check that your child is familiar with the syllabus and requirements of their exam board.

I believe that a good understanding of Maths and Physics is a key skill with benefits in so many aspects of life. Having seen first hand how studying STEM at higher level can lead to an exciting and rewarding career I'm keen to pass on my knowledge and my enthusiasm for the subject.

Teaching Experience:
Currently I work as an Aerospace Engineer in fast jet development, I have tutored informally for siblings and friends in the past at GCSE level. I was previously offered a job as a secondary Physics teacher although I did not end up accepting the position.

Tutoring Approach:
As with any subject, everyone learns in different ways- however I believe this is especially true of STEM subjects as often key scientific concepts can be tricky to understand at first. I always aim to be able to teach a concept/idea in a few different ways and use tools such as visualisation of problems with diagrams and animations to illustrate a point. Most importantly I believe in using real world examples, as without them it can sometimes be hard to understand why we are learning these things, and can make the problem feel more approachable/familiar.
