After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I usually start with the current topics that student is studying in the school and explain to the student that topic and related background knowledge. As I teach one to one, my pace is faster than school and we usually finish the topic in one or sometimes two classes. And then we do previous topics and I explain doubts on those topics. I am a scientist and engineer who has always been curious about how and why things work - from small scale to astronomical - and I really enjoy being able to draw upon that experience to help students to understand maths and science concepts in ways that they can apply in their own studies and help with exam questions. I have been using maths and science throughout my career and I hope to help and inspire students by drawing upon both my academic knowledge of maths and physics and my wider work experience to help them understand the relevance of the topics they are studying by applying topics to some real-world applications.

I qualified with a bachelor's and master's degree in physics from Oxford University and an engineering doctorate (which was largely mathematics-based) from the University of Birmingham.

For most of school, university and career to date, my interest in how things work has guided my life. I have been applying maths, science, engineering and technology to real world applications, problems and challenges through conducting research and development and managing and coaching R&D teams, becoming a Chartered Physicist in the process. I am a Cambridge Mathematics graduate and experienced Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics tutor with ten years of private tutoring and teaching experience.

My academic background spans Mathematics, Physics and energy policy. I studied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, completed an MSc in High-Energy Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and am completing a UCL PhD in energy policy. I am also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and a published academic.

I achieved five A*s at A-level in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, including full marks across my Mathematics and Further Mathematics modules.

I specialise particularly in A-level and IB Mathematics, Further Mathematics and advanced problem-solving, although I also teach GCSE/IGCSE Mathematics, Physics, STEP, MAT, Digital SAT Mathematics, AP examinations, 11+ and other school and university entrance examinations.

Teaching Experience:
I have ten years of tutoring and teaching experience across Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and entrance examinations.

My school-level experience includes GCSE/IGCSE, European Baccalaureate, A-level, IB, Pre-U, STEP, MAT, Digital SAT Mathematics, AP examinations, 11+ and selective-school entrance examinations.

I have repeatedly helped students improve by two or more grades. Previous examples include students moving from U to B, D to A and C to A*. I have also supported students through MAT and STEP before they went on to read Mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge.

Alongside private tutoring, I have taught Mathematics and Further Mathematics in high-school and sixth-form settings from Years 10-13. My responsibilities included working with the Head of Mathematics to structure the A-level curriculum, adapting lessons for students who were either falling behind or progressing beyond the expected level, and working across different examination boards.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach begins with diagnosis. When I start working with a student, I establish where they currently stand relative to their syllabus or admissions requirements and identify what is actually limiting their progress.

The same disappointing result can have very different causes: missing foundational knowledge, fragile algebra, difficulty recognising which method applies, inaccurate execution, poor examination timing or a lack of confidence with unfamiliar questions. I use recent work and carefully selected problems to distinguish between these before developing a longer-term plan.

I then build understanding before turning it into efficient technique. I want students to understand why a method works, when it applies and how it connects with ideas they already know.

Students do as much of the reasoning as possible themselves. I use questioning, staged prompts and progressively harder problems rather than simply demonstrating solutions for them to imitate. As the student's understanding improves, I deliberately reduce the amount of support I provide.

Mistakes are treated diagnostically. We identify whether an error came from understanding, recognising the appropriate method, algebraic execution, interpretation of the question or examination strategy. This allows us to address recurring problems rather than repeatedly correcting isolated answers.

For high-attaining students, Further Mathematics and admissions candidates, I place particular emphasis on unfamiliar problems, sustained mathematical arguments and learning how to recover when an initial approach fails.

As examinations approach, we combine this with detailed work on timing, question interpretation, method selection, clear working, checking and targeted past-paper practice.

My ultimate goal is not to make students dependent on tuition. It is to help them become increasingly confident and independent mathematicians who can diagnose their own difficulties and approach demanding work with greater control.

Personal Description:
I live in Woking & work in a college in Weybridge. I've enjoyed teaching & tutoring maths & physics all my working life & even during my years working in engineering. By far the most important thing for me is for a student to feel relaxed in a lesson & know they are not being judged about topics & theory they are not confident with. This is as important for my students aiming for A* at A level as it is for a student who just wants a bit of confidence & repeatable methods to achieve a grade 4 or 5 at GCSE. I have always had an interest in maths & Engineering & feel very fortunate that this is my profession. I also enjoy a modest amount of cycling & swimming together with tennis.

Teaching Experience:
I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol & worked in industry within the hydraulics & gas sampling sector. I am a qualified teacher, specializing in gcse/igcse maths & physics and A level maths at schools in Surrey. I have taught maths & physics for 15 years & for the past 6 years I have enjoyed teaching maths & Engineering at a college in Weybridge. Throughout this time & my time in industry I've had continuous & extensive experience teaching learners one to one, tailoring my teaching very much to learners individual needs.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching starts with gaining an understanding of how the student feels about the subject, how they learn best, whether its by following examples, going through specific theory or starting from the building blocks eg fractions & algebra. Many difficulties go back to primary school where few principles were thoroughly explained & embedded, sowing seeds of difficulty when moving on to more advanced arithmetic & algebra in secondary school. My teaching is very relaxed and emphasizes a consistent repeatable approach to solving problems, trying to see the connection between what you are given & what is being asked, a crucial skill for all learners. This is by far the best way to allow students to build their confidence both to get through the grade 4 barrier and to gain fluency in those last grade 8 & 9 questions in the High level papers.
I also extend this approach to A level learners to ensure everyone can reach their full potential. It is no secret that early and very extensive exam practice is a huge part of exam success. My fluency in the specifications allows me to help learners focus on sometimes small subtopics & wording that can make all the difference to achieve a high grade.

I feel having genuine empathy with the learner, their hopes & fears and where they wish to be with their maths or Physics is the most important must of teaching. All other aspects of achieving follow from this.
