I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. I have been tutoring students since March 2008 and am able to offer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, and general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level. During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. Teaching Experience:
Since 2010, I have been tutoring in the academic subjects Maths and the individual Sciences; Biology, Chemistry & Physics.

I have taught at both primary- and secondary-school levels, with my students ranging between the ages of 6 and 16.

I can also help with entrance examinations for secondary school (including verbal and non-verbal reasoning), and I have provided mentorship and coaching when it comes to UCAS application forms, personal statements and CV writing.

Whilst I enjoyed some of the subjects at school, certain subjects and topics (including Maths!) didn't come naturally to me. I achieved 7A*s and 5A*s at GCSE, and went on to study Biology, Chemistry & Maths at A-Level.

As I have already mentioned, I have a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and my tutoring approach is a student-centred one. My experiences covers tutoring, mentoring and coaching and I use a combination of the three in my work.

I am yet to come across a student who doesn't possess the potential to improve. More often than not, it is the large class sizes at school, or a teacher whose approach isn't the right fit, which explains why a student doesn't understand a particular subject, or particular topics within that subject.

Through the 1-to-1 work I do with students, not only have I witnessed some remarkable grade improvements but also some amazing transformations in confidence. I strongly feel that the work I do is more than merely improving grades for exams.

⭐ My philosophy is that if you are struggling with a particular subject or topic, it's not your fault and there's nothing wrong with you. It simply means you've not been taught in a way that makes sense to you (or you've not been given the time and attention to be taught properly - in a big class and with the pressures of working through an extensive curriculum).

For older students, however, I do not want to undermine the importance of being properly prepared for public examinations. The beauty of maths and physics is that the amount of rote learning is much less than other subjects and practice problem solving and understanding concepts is the key to success, this provides much more engaging revision. Although if you are struggling with teaching yourself a new topic or just didn't find that you 'got it' in class, it can be incredibly demoralising. This is where a second explanation or some targeted understanding can help out. moreover, with regular meetings, we can increase the efficiency of your study and I can teach you some tips on self-assessment and identifying in what manner you can help yourself, which is a vital skill the higher up the educational ladder you climb.

For younger students, my approach is to build a strong foundation of the basic skills whilst exploring more intricate concepts in a guided but ambitious manner. I believe that many students are capable of going far beyond the scope of their syllabuses, with the right guidance and encouragement.

Those "Aha moments" that my student's experience when they make the connections that help it all make sense... sadly so often missed out in some of the narrowly focused school based classroom environments...

The students who go from bottom of the class and being advised they should aim for N4 not N5, to achieving A grades and their teachers recommending them for higher...

The students who were failing and dispirited who progress to pass with very secure B grades, their confidence and positivity restored.

A positive relationship between tutor and tutee is essential for effective learning, so building a respectful and trusting dynamic is the basis of my work. I always seek to focus on improving and deepening understanding with an approach that reduces anxiety and builds confidence and motivation.

My teaching style is collaborative and supportive. I am friendly and approachable with a real concern for each student's experiences, passions and difficulties and how I might best help them. I take a flexible approach to build positive relationships with students of varying interests and personalities.

Building a student's understanding of the fundamentals of the subject is key as this leads to deep and effective long term learning and will build confidence in the student and also their cognitive abilities to perform at higher levels.

I also work hard to help students improve their study techniques and to become more independent learners and more reflective and critical thinkers. This helps students to achieve at their best in all subject areas and also to develop the resilience and self-directed study skills needed to succeed in their future studies.

I am a qualified secondary science teacher who specialises in Biology. I currently work at Buxton and Leek College as Lead Lecturer for T-Level Health and BTEC Health and Social Care. I have a degree in Biology, experience working within the NHS and I am currently tutoring to students in the evenings, alongside my full time FE teaching role.
I am a very relaxed teacher, who likes to get to know my students so I can tailor a personalised approach to my lessons.
I am a huge Harry Potter fan, love books, movies and board games.

Teaching Experience:
I am a PGCE trained science teacher and I have spent 1 year teaching in a secondary school where I was able to teach all science subjects to GCSE students. I ran an after school science club to a group of students who were wanting additional support. I have spent the past 1.5 years lecturing at Buxton College to T-Level and BTEC students, teaching both Biology and Chemistry to level 3 and 4 students plus healthcare units. I have also been private tutoring for the past 10 months in the evenings.

Tutoring Approach:
I will first start by gauging my students abilities, strengths and weaknesses. I will then develop a personalised plan for each student so that we can develop areas of weakness and build upon their core strengths. I have a very relaxed style and realise that students learn better when they are engaged and interested in he content. I put an emphasis on a deep understanding of each concept, theory, method, and observation, as well as acquiring and mastering technical skills.I am thorough in teaching, and besides explaining everything clearly I also provide and walk with the student through the necessary material - usually in the form of slides, interactive questions and quizzes, simulations, notes, problems and past papers / exam practice papers - for a solid understanding through assimilation of the ideas as well as practice. Problem-solving methods are discussed and explained, not only as to how a problem is solved, but also why it's solved that way: this helps the student understand the maths and science behind the problem better, as well as develop their critical and analytical abilities that will help them tackle any other problem in maths and science as well as in life in general.

I encourage questioning, not hesitating to raise unclear points, individuality in thinking and working, having an inquisitive and creative mind, and being good friends and generosity with working time. My particular planning and delivery of the tutorials depend on the individual student's current motivation, needs, and knowledge, as well as the particular content of the topic that is taught. I also often discuss with the student ways to learn as well as study. True learning and understanding has a multifaceted nature.

I believe that everyone has the potential to reach their aims, and I always do my utmost so that this will happen for each one of my students.
