I have 45 years of full-time teaching experience of Maths and physics in schools, colleges and universities. However for the past 13 years, I have been preparing students exclusively for the linear and modular GCSE Maths for the Edexcel, AQA and O&C examination boards with resounding success. I have just finished a PhD in maths at Newcastle University so it goes without saying I'm enthusiastic about both maths and physics. On top of this I have a wide variety of interests, and this allows me to find ways of explaining things that the people I'm tutoring can relate to.

While studying at Newcastle I've taken many tutorials for students taking courses in Maths. For the past 6 years I've also worked in a tutoring drop-in centre where any student at Newcastle University can come to ask maths questions. I am Ian, a friendly and enthusiastic mathematician, a former teacher of maths and physics A Levels while living on the south coast of England, now relocated to Glasgow. I believe that there is much beauty to be found in mathematics and science and try to convey this appreciation alongside the technical skills required to get you through your exams. These subjects don't have to be the impenetrable list of technicalities they are often portrayed as!

I have a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics and its Applications from the University of Sussex. When friends asked me how I managed to get a first in my degree, I'm afraid I could only offer a traditional answer - hard work, and a fair amount of it. Maths is one of the hardest subjects to bluff your way through, and although it's possible to scrape by with a passing acquaintance of the concepts involved, you will never do particularly well without a deeper understanding of the subject. However, this shouldn't be taken as a cause for despair - far from it! With a proper understanding of the subject, a real empathy with the "why" rather than the "how", mathematics not only becomes far more interesting but also easier. I always aim to help students see the bigger picture and how the disparate parts of your course syllabus fit together.

I have several years of recent experience of teaching A level Maths, Further Maths and Physics at a school in the south of England. While living in England, I have tutored students from across Brighton and Hove (and occasionally beyond), and have a good understanding of the common barriers to success that students encounter and how to help overcome them.

Tutoring Approach:
Everyone's tutoring needs are different. To make sure that I can offer you the help that you need, I usually start by arranging a visit to you at your home. I'm a fully qualified secondary Physics teacher with four years of classroom experience, having taught in South Lanarkshire and now working in an East Renfrewshire secondary school. I'm enthusiastic about making Physics feel less intimidating and helping pupils build confidence in a subject that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

I'm friendly, patient and approachable, and I really enjoy seeing that moment when something finally "clicks" for a pupil. I aim to create a relaxed environment where pupils feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and working through problems at their own pace.

I have four years of experience teaching secondary Science and Physics, including National 5 and Higher Physics. I currently teach both National 5 and Higher classes and have experience planning courses, creating assessments and prelims, marking and moderation, supported study and exam preparation.

As a classroom teacher, I have worked with pupils across a wide range of abilities and confidence levels. This means I'm very used to identifying where a pupil is struggling, breaking difficult concepts into manageable steps and adapting explanations until we find one that works for them.
