As a teenager I was lucky enough to receive tuition myself and it made a huge difference, so I really know how much of an advantage it gives.

Tutoring is my full-time job and has been for many years.

I am extremely quick at identifying student problem areas and devising the most efficient solutions, sometimes with budget or time constraints. Where necessary I focus on exam technique as I find many capable and knowledgeable students gain confidence (and marks!) once these skills are taught.

During the last two decades I have worked with many hundreds of students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. Semi-retired ex Managing Director and Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers with 30+ years in the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical industry, so not only am I good at maths / science but spent a lot of time applying it on projects worth up to $5 billion !

I am very into rare classic cars, so if you hear a loud exhaust note outside it probably means I've arrived.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is to ensure students understand the areas of learning they are struggling with and build on that to ensure confidence in all areas of the course. I challenge pupils on what they already know to ensure it is correctly reinforced and their confidence grows. I tutor using reciprocal learning, where students are able to independently learn a topic and then have a tutorial style lesson where they reinforce that learning. Tutoring styles are always adapted to the needs of the learner which is very quickly established.

I live with my wife in Tooting, London. We have two children, one at Manchester University, the other graduated from Leeds University. I am a keen cyclist, bass guitar player and physics enthusiast!

Teaching Experience:
I have 28 years experience in a Wandsworth secondary school teaching science at KS3 and KS4, and physics from KS3 through GCSE to A level. I have taught AQA GCSE Trilogy Science, AQA GCSE Physics, AQA and OCR A Level Physics and Edexcel BTEC Applied Science physics. As Head of Physics I am responsible for how the curriculum is delivered and also for examination results, for which I have a long track record of success. Outside of this role I have tutored students one-to-one at both GCSE and A Level.

I like to begin with a discussion of what areas of the curriculum to focus on, including subject areas and skills (eg rearranging equations, or long-answer questions etc) together with what learning styles work best - question-based or understanding fundamental ideas, or practicing calculations for example. MPhys (Integrated Masters) Physics and Astrophysics graduate at the University of Leicester. Currently working as a Systems Engineer at Thales, I enjoy teaching fundamental science and mathematics and spreading awareness of STEM.

I have worked as a private and with different organisations as a tutor for the past 8 years teaching Physics and Maths at different levels to various age groups.
I have also held my work as a summer school physics teacher, overviewing the basics of physics to students looking to study further. I approach teaching through storytelling rather than compound teaching. Firstly understanding the level of the student, and the background knowledge they have within the subject.
I then generate a plan according to what they know and teach them utilising different facts and a lot of problem-solving.
Having a good insight into what the student lack, and understanding why they lack the skills allows me to generate a targeted lesson, and help them understand and enjoy learning Physics & Maths.
