Each student is different, and I feel it an insult to my students' integrity to tell them how to revise when first meeting them. Through my experience teaching, there is no right way to study, but there are a variety of 'better' ways to make the best grades for each person's potential.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe in tailoring the teaching approach to each student's needs and individual learning style. For school children and university students, I discuss their aims with them - and with their parents, if required - to determine what topics need additional tuition and then to work out the appropriate programme. I advocate continuous assessment to measure the student's progress. Closer to exams, the pupils will work through focused papers. At this stage, strategic choices may be made to concentrate on the pupil's strengths.
My core teaching is for A levels. I have discovered that certain topics in the new syllabus often require extra explanation and practice. These are:

From an early age I have been extremely enthusiastic about mathematics and since leaving education, and before I chose to pursue a career in education, I have been fascinated by learning and problem solving. Also, if acceptable, I would try to involve a parent in the tuition process so that they can work with the tutee at a later date, if they thought it would help. My first session is normally spent working out the best tutoring technique, how motivated the student is and what sort of ability they are. For example, in some cases I like to set small amounts of homework which actually help develop a deep understanding of the question, rather than bundles of questions that encourage method-learning repetition.

In general though, I like to go through the content as fast or as slow as necessary, and then do some past paper or textbook questions with the student. I work mostly as a software developer and have been doing this, self employed, for over 20 years. Maths tuition makes up a significant part of my work, but it is no more than half. Previous work has included engineering, as a draughtsman and CAD operator. I retrained as a teacher in the 1990s during a period of unemployment, but apart from some part time work in further education I have not worked as a teacher until recently starting with tuition.

Teaching Experience:
I have degree in Mathematical Education with Qualified Teacher Status and this included teaching in secondary school. I have also taught a Materials Science module in further education at the same time that I was training as a teacher. This was between 1993 and 1995.
I worked for an online tuition provider from November 2021 to December 2022, teaching maths to students between years 7 and 11, including GCSE revision. I taught around 400 lessons in that time.
At the time of writing this I am still providing online tuition but have a much reduced timetable while I try to acquire some more students.

For online tuition I use Zoom for the connection and a virtual whiteboard that allows me to share images and documents, and write and draw on them. My approach varies depending on the age and ability of the student. For older students looking to improve their exam grades it is usually a mixture of working through past papers, looking at specific questions, or demonstrating a particular topic. At the younger end We may be going over a topic that has been done in school recently and there will be more emphasis on the student answering some questions as we work through exercises.

I offer online tuition lessons for key stage 3 and 4 mathematics, GCSE revision and 11+ examination preparation.

The lesson is all about the pupil! I ensure my tutoring is pupil-centred and that I am meeting their learning needs and filling in their gaps of knowledge. I use positive rapport and relationship building to create a positive learning environment for the pupil.

In the first lesson, I would give the pupils an assessment, which allows me to identify their gaps in the curriculum. I would then focus on filling the gaps in future tuition sessions. In the beginning of each lesson, pupils are tested on prior knowledge to ensure they can recall the information.

I break down a topic or question into smaller parts, and ensure pupils can then confidently apply the skill they have learnt to future questions. I use a variety of resources and teaching methods, making learning accessible for all.

My techniques involve exposing students to exam style questions throughout the tutoring experience to ensure they can apply the knowledge they have learnt. Other methods I use are spot the mistake, underlining key parts of a question, and linking topics to prior information.

I can set homework at the end of each session if the pupil wishes me to do so. Parents/carers are given feedback at the end of each session to ensure they are kept up to date.
