I am a graduate in Physics with Astrophysics, which was a four year degree, which included me living and learning in Italy. My degree was challenging yet enjoyable, and contained a lot of Maths, which to me was great! As a born communicator writing and teaching have always appealed, and having spent the last decade tutoring and working for the Institute of Physics, I can definitely say I enjoy it as much now as I did when I started.. I also have a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:
For the last 12 years I have taught a wide variety of learners from the age of 6 all the way up to 45! This includes Maths, physics, and EFL at all levels, as well as English language/literature and Biology and Chemistry up to GCSE. I also taught children EFL for 6 weeks over a summer. A bit of background about me: I completed my degree in chemistry in 1993 and began my PhD in physical chemistry the following year. Following completion of my PhD I continued to work in academic research in physical and materials chemistry until 2002 when I changed career to work in industry. I initially started off as a chemist in an analytical laboratory before working my way into senior management in the automotive, chemical and oil industries. I am yet to come across a student who doesn't possess the potential to improve. More often than not, it is the large class sizes at school, or a teacher whose approach isn't the right fit, which explains why a student doesn't understand a particular subject, or particular topics within that subject.

Through the 1-to-1 work I do with students, not only have I witnessed some remarkable grade improvements but also some amazing transformations in confidence. I strongly feel that the work I do is more than merely improving grades for exams.

Hello! My name is Gemma and I am a 32 year old doctor, chartered accountant, strategy consultant and successful start up founder. I graduated in medicine from Nottingham University in 2016, switched to finance, became a qualified chartered accountant, and now work for one of the 'Big4' in health advisory and strategic consulting. However, my heart will always lie with the sciences, and somehow in amongst all of my wide ranging career, my favourite job has always been teaching.

My approach is student-centred and goal-oriented, placing conceptual understanding above rote memorisation. I begin with an initial assessment to identify each student's strengths and areas for development. From there, every session is tailored to the student's specific needs-whether that means consolidating tricky classroom topics, preparing for an upcoming mock exam, or developing a long-term revision strategy for final A-levels.

Achieving a strong exam grade requires not only a solid grasp of mathematical concepts but, more importantly, strong problem-solving skills. In my sessions, I regularly use past paper questions, emphasising a logical, well-structured approach that makes workings clear and easy to follow. I also help students build their numerical fluency by introducing carefully selected mental maths questions as daily practice (set as homework). Finally, I provide constructive, specific feedback to help students learn from their mistakes and refine the exam techniques needed to reach the top grades.
