Whilst I strongly believe that there are benefits to reading notation, I also teach by ear and am happy to focus on this if a pupil so wishes. In July 2013, I graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, undertaking a BMus (Hons) Music degree (2.1) with a principle study in singing (1st). I took two gap years before going to university to gain experience in the music and drama fields. I have studied modules at university ranging from Bach to Beethoven and Sibelius to Weill.

Teaching Experience:
In my two gap years I was a gap student at Bedales Schools for a term and then was invited back to cover a member of music staff. Responsibilities included teaching 8-13 year old mixed pupils classroom music as well as supervising music practices. I have a very laid-back attitude to teaching and will teach you in similar ways that I have been taught. I use various teaching resources which I have both collected and created myself to cover all areas of piano playing, i.e. sight-reading, theory, scales, technical exercises, duo and ensemble playing. I find it more important (especially for a young person) to develop a natural relationship with the instrument and to learn to love the sound of it by making it and listening to it rather than to merely focus on achieving grades as quickly as possible.

Hi, my name's Chris and I provide a guitar tuition service in and around Worcester. I offer both acoustic and electric guitar lessons for beginner and intermediate students of all ages. I teach a variety of styles and can tailor lessons to your own musical interests so that you're not only learning the music you love, but developing other essential skills in a relevant musical context.

Teaching Experience:
I have 12 years experience playing guitar and hold a joint-honours degree in music.

Tutoring Approach:
In addition to teaching you how to play the guitar, I can offer expertise in other areas of music. Having spent three years studying music at university, and being a writer myself, I can assist you with your own compositions, arrangements and songs. Likewise I can help with the sometimes precarious art of accompanying yourself as a singer! The focus of lessons is up to you, though equally if you're unsure of exactly what you'd like to learn I can offer plenty of options. My teaching has reading and listening at it's heart. The best thing I have done since coming to London is open my ears to all the styles I didn't like, listen over and over, until they started to grow on me! Music is a cultural and historical lesson as well, it's interesting to see where the popular styles of today came from! Reading will just make you more employable as all the session, musical theatre and holiday camp drummers will tell you! I use software such as Noteflight which allows me to playback scores, making sight reading an easier and more enjoyable process, and meaning I can share scores with students via email. Each student is also given a video recording of what we studied in the lesson, which is a very valuable resource, something they can take away from each lesson, and makes remembering what we learned much easier!

I come from a family where music is extremely important. At school, my first band was a rock covers band where my brother played bass. We played regularly in pubs in Dorset, (you may have heard of the Teddy Rocks festival, we played in the very first festival and have played with my band Last Resort ever since). I have 2 Grade 8 distinctions, one from Rockshool and one from Trinity Guildhall, I did the rockschool one first and then thought it best to add the Trinity one!
