I am a PhD mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. I am familiar with many aspects of secondary education through my children who both completed their A levels at Hills Road 6th form college. My son has just begun reading Economics at London School of Economics while my daughter obtained a first class honours degree from Oriel College Oxford.

Tutoring Approach:
The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

From an early age I have been extremely enthusiastic about mathematics and since leaving education, and before I chose to pursue a career in education, I have been fascinated by learning and problem solving. I am currently a teacher in a new school in Hackney, East London. The college is for 14-18 year olds so I specialise in GCSE and A-Level maths teaching. We cater for a range of different backgrounds and abilities which requires the staff to have a wide ranging skill-set. I have previously taught for 5 full years, including 2 years at a 4-18 international school, and have 3 years teaching experience in the UK. My previous school was an independent international school. In all my years as a teacher I have taught GCSE classes and have come to have a sound knowledge of both AQA and Edexcel curriculums. I am also aware that GCSEs serve 2 purposes - one to gain a specific skill set and acquire subject knowledge, the other to achieve a prestigious and important qualification. I have worked in business for several years since completing a maths masters degree at Leeds University. As a relatively new teacher I have a fresh perspective on current barriers to learning and misconceptions within my chosen subject.

I believe the key to learning is presenting a new topic in a way that the learner can engage with best. I would aim to break a complex problem down into smaller more manageable parts. Also, if acceptable, I would try to involve a parent in the tuition process so that they can work with the tutee at a later date, if they thought it would help. Half my students tend to be preparing for exams, using techniques I've perfected to help guide them through their exam periods. Most students will tend to require confidence boosting and I've had the most satisfaction being able to change opinions/beliefs about the subject, helping to show the student that they're capable of anything they set their mind to.

Since university I have enjoyed tutoring part time and full time and was also contracted for a few years by Honiton Community College to provide individual and group tutoring sessions to underachieving students, during and after school.

Teaching Experience:
I started tutoring GCSE maths part time in Year 13 (S6), providing a very structured tutoring by my school. The students engaged well and it helped to have people of a similar age that the students could relate to, enabling a more relaxed learning atmosphere. I also informally helped peers of various levels whilst at university, maths students but also engineering and foundation levels. When my services were required in a particular area, then they asked for help on short notice.

I've been tutoring full time over the past 10 years, working 7 days a week from the new academic year onward. Peak hours ranged in excess of 40hrs. I've therefore assessed the likely weaknesses of a student and have already provided and perfected the best methods of explanation.

Tutoring Approach:
Casual tutoring of areas of difficulty, or can do more structured learning of a curriculum, either intense learning (several school years of maths into months) or weekly troubleshooting. I've established good quality material for any level. Plenty of students just require good material and direction for their efforts, with positive reinforcement to really shine. Many long term students will tend to then appreciate and enjoy study, visibly moving towards their goals.

The first meeting will be free with the aim of getting to know one another, and establishing the strengths and weaknesses of the tutee, and at the pace the student requires. At which point a structured plan of action can be drawn up. In some cases the tutee may lack the confidence in certain areas, but can in fact do what's required. Even a casual troubleshooting session every now and then can set their worries at rest.

Should extracurricular material be required or wanted then I'll be happy to provide. This material might not be hard for the tutee, but will help link in various areas of mathematics and will require a little thought about the patterns seen. It's never compulsory, but with a little encouragement a little extra goes a long way.

Engineering is one of the hardest subjects you can study, and it doesn't help when module content is disorganised, learning materials are messy and hard to follow, and when lecturers are too busy to respond to your questions. I am Ian, a friendly and enthusiastic mathematician, a former teacher of maths and physics A Levels while living on the south coast of England, now relocated to Glasgow. I have a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics and its Applications from the University of Sussex. When friends asked me how I managed to get a first in my degree, I'm afraid I could only offer a traditional answer - hard work, and a fair amount of it. Maths is one of the hardest subjects to bluff your way through, and although it's possible to scrape by with a passing acquaintance of the concepts involved, you will never do particularly well without a deeper understanding of the subject. However, this shouldn't be taken as a cause for despair - far from it! With a proper understanding of the subject, a real empathy with the "why" rather than the "how", mathematics not only becomes far more interesting but also easier. I always aim to help students see the bigger picture and how the disparate parts of your course syllabus fit together.

Teaching Experience:
I have several years of recent experience of teaching A level Maths, Further Maths and Physics at a school in the south of England. While living in England, I have tutored students from across Brighton and Hove (and occasionally beyond), and have a good understanding of the common barriers to success that students encounter and how to help overcome them.

Tutoring Approach:
Everyone's tutoring needs are different. To make sure that I can offer you the help that you need, I usually start by arranging a visit to you at your home. For students living with parents or carers, this is an ideal chance to meet with everyone and make sure that we are all happy with the arrangements we come to. The FameLab competition gave me a chance to inform large groups of people about my chosen scientific topic. I gave multiple talks within my school and also at the University of Hull in the Allam medical building.
During my education, I would often find myself clarifying points to my fellow students which they didn't grasp first time.
During my time working on NCS, a large part of my role was to get participants of all different backgrounds and interests involved and this is something which is heavily applicable to tutoring.
