I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

When I'm not acting or tutoring I can be found in the plumbing, plastering, kitchen or grappling with a cryptic crossword.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material to build students' confidence. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative and effective approaches to study, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

My passion is building confidence and fostering resilient approaches to problem solving.

I have over 15 years teaching experience, the majority of my work has been at secondary level, where my specialisms are Drama, English, English Literature, Film studies and History. However, I also have extensive experience in primary education where I have taught across the breadth of the curriculum.

My preoccupation with academia was nurtured at a competitive Grammar School, RGS Worcester, a top school with high expectations. I went on to acquire a first class degree. I remain now, as I have always been, a high achiever.

I also work in the creative arts, as actor, tutor and director, inspired by performance art in all its forms. I am a practising Head of English currently employed in a local secondary school. I live with my husband, Year 10 daughter, my 17 year old son who is training to be a Land Surveyor and our pets. I have, in previous years, taught Drama (for which I am also qualified), History and Religious Studies as I have a joint honours degree in English and Victorian Studies and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education for English and Drama.

Teaching Experience:
I have 20 years of teaching experience, many of which are in local schools and I am Head of English in a local secondary school which I am really enjoying. Over the years I have privately tutored 11+ and 12+ exams, KS2 English and Maths, Year 6-7 transition skills, KS3 English, GCSE English and English Literature for a variety of exam boards and A' Level English Literature. I have also worked at various times with SEN students with a whole range of issues and I set up and ran the gifted and talented programme at one of the schools where I taught when it was a new Government initiative.

I really enjoy teaching as a profession and very early on, I realised that it is my duty to treat every child in my care as if they are my own child and that they are getting the teaching and learning experience that I would like my own children to have. I have been a teaching assistant for 5 years, working with a range of abilities as well as within a variety of year groups.

I am currently working in year 6 and have experience teaching SAT's booster groups and have good knowledge of the year 6 curriculum. I can offer tuition in maths, reading comprehension, writing or spelling and grammar including practice of SAT's style questions and any other areas where the pupil may struggle. Tutoring Approach:
My approach is problem-based and diagnostic. This means that the student is actively engaged in solving problems for almost the entire lesson whilst I am responding to their answers by asking questions which reveal any underlying misconceptions.

I work on the basis that student difficulties usually arise from an insufficiently rich understanding of 'easy' topics. By investing time to revisit some of these easier areas and studying them in a more thorough and enriching way, students can subsequently make rapid progress whilst gaining an appreciation and enjoyment of their studies.

My teaching style is calm and informal. Although class discipline is always maintained I strive to make learning a fun process.

As parents have come to realise, it's essential for children to be able to successfully apply what they have learnt under the potentially stressful conditions of an exam or test. Additional support via exam techniques helps children take advantage of the knowledge they possess and have recently acquired.


Assessment and progress reports

Based on your child's initial assessment, we create a plan that sets their individual targets for verbal, non-verbal and numeric reasoning. All lessons throughout the course are designed to develop these areas. Tuition plans can be revised to ensure they meet the current needs and challenges of the student.

You will always have the same point of contact for progress updates thereby ensuring continuity of your child's preparation for the 11+ exams. I am an enthusiastic qualified teacher with extensive classroom and private tutoring experience. I am currently not working in school full time as I am undertaking my Masters in Education at Reading University as well as caring for live my little boy, I am willing to teach online, travel to your home or a nearby suitable study space.

I love teaching and believe that all children can excel. I have been teaching for over 15 years with a large proportion of my experience in years 5 and 6. I have been a SATs marker for over 10 years now so definitely know how to get the best out of children in preparation for success not only in their SATs but also secondary school. I am a friendly, capable and effective tutor with a degree in Maths. A 20-year career with Shell and 16 years tutoring have given me a lot of experience in helping people and a good dose of common sense! I tutor in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas, Newport Pagnell, Bletchley, Olney etc.
