I am an independent tutor with a strong scientific background and have lived in England since Aug 1965. Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. We have a son and a daughter; both graduated from Universities in Manchester. Following my voluntary redundancy from AstraZeneca, (Jun 2008), I am now a self-employed Tutor / Consultant. Teaching Experience:
During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. The key is for them to understand the topic by linking to something which they previously now. This creates a connection in their brain to help them remember and understand the concept long-term. My first session is normally spent working out the best tutoring technique, how motivated the student is and what sort of ability they are. For example, in some cases I like to set small amounts of homework which actually help develop a deep understanding of the question, rather than bundles of questions that encourage method-learning repetition.

From here, each session can build on the previous and will depend a lot on the current progress of the student, upcoming examinations, strengths and weaknesses and how confident they are. In general though, I like to go through the content as fast or as slow as necessary, and then do some past paper or textbook questions with the student. Each session I will set an aim determined with the student and work towards that aim.

My approach to teaching conceptual misunderstandings is that any idea can be understood by anyone, as long as it is deconstructed into small enough steps and that the student is walked through each step at the correct pace. During lessons, I guide students through past paper questions, building their confidence as they apply their knowledge to real-life situations. For exams, I believe that active recall (recalling and using information from memory alone) and studying mark schemes are the best way to revise.

I have always been interested in teaching from my GSCE years. I began helping my neighbours and brother with their after school homework.
