I am a fully qualified teacher and have worked as a private tutor since having my first child in 2009. I tutor Maths up to GCSE, offering exam preparation and last minute Easter holiday revision sessions. I also tutor English up to year 9 and specialise in 11+ preparation.

Teaching Experience:
I have six years of full-time teaching experience, working within independent and state schools. In addition, I have tutored a range of children aged between 5 and 16 years of age, privately, and within schools for the National Tutoring Covid Catch-Up Programme. As a result, I have a wide knowledge of the National Curriculum. In total, I have over 15 years of tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:
I offer face-to-face tuition which takes place at your home. I am a patient and caring person who can explain things clearly. In addition, I will take the time to ensure that your child understands a concept but I will also set high expectations to push them to achieve their full potential. I believe in positivity and praise to build confidence and enthusiasm, which ultimately will aid success.

I also tutor online using Zoom with shared PowerPoints and websites to create interactive lessons. I have a wide variety of books from which I provide relevant questions for students to practise. Homework can be set upon request, and I can also assist with homework set from school.

I have tutored and homeschooled online and in person since 2012 in KS2 Literacy and Literature, 11+ & 13+ examinations, KS3 literacy, and GCSE/A Level examinations in English Language and English Literature across the full range of exam boards. Engineering is one of the hardest subjects you can study, and it doesn't help when module content is disorganised, learning materials are messy and hard to follow, and when lecturers are too busy to respond to your questions. I am married, and live in Gloucestershire with our two Chocolate Labradors. Prior to teaching, I worked in advertising and then recruitment for 10 years. I have been teaching for the greater part of twenty years.
I am an avid reader, and keen amateur actor.

My approach is open and relatively informal. I feel that tutoring works best when a relationship is established between myself and the student - they should feel free to ask questions, raise issues, and discuss any aspect of the work that interests them. It's very different to being taught in the classroom: in addition to individual attention, it also offers the opportunity to read and study texts not on the curriculum which can augment and strengthen the school syllabus. English is essentially a skills based subject. Although there is a lot of content to learn at both GCSE and A level, students benefit from being able to access and flexibly use the techniques needed to study and criticize. Between 2020-2022 I have taught the neuroscience course (NHB) for 2nd year undergraduates at Jesus College Cambridge. Supervisions comprise of weekly small group teaching. I have also taught the NHB course privately 1:1. I regularly teach younger students (10-14).

Hello, my name is Milo. I am undertaking a Masters in Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge, having just achieved a First Class Bachelor's Degree in Natural Sciences. I have a high proficiency in Physics and Maths and am an experienced teacher. My approach to teaching conceptual misunderstandings is that any idea can be understood by anyone, as long as it is deconstructed into small enough steps and that the student is walked through each step at the correct pace. During lessons, I guide students through past paper questions, building their confidence as they apply their knowledge to real-life situations. For exams, I believe that active recall (recalling and using information from memory alone) and studying mark schemes are the best way to revise.

Alongside tutoring, I have previously worked as a Dyslexia Coordinator and teacher in various schools and colleges, including Harrow College, Uxbridge College, Barnet College, Stanmore College, Weald College, West Herts College, and as a Teacher/Tutor Inspector for Harrow Borough Council. My most recent lesson observations were graded Outstanding (Grade 1) by Ofsted, and I can provide excellent references from colleges, parents and former students.

My teaching approach is multi-sensory (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic). I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable, not a chore. In the first lesson, I assess individual needs, form a learning plan, give feedback to parents, then aim to fill in any learning gaps before moving on. Each session builds on previous learning. I always say that if a student does not understand how I have explained something, this is my responsibility to rectify, not the student. Repeating instructions is not the key - explaining in different ways is what works.
