I have completed my PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at UEA. I also have an MA (Distinction) in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway, and a First Class Honours Degree in English Literature. I also have a good Fine Art degree from Chelsea College of Art and Design. I have been a private tutor for twenty years, and have taught many children in that time.

I am currently tutoring in Wadebridge in Cornwall but can offer Skype or Zoom lessons.

Jack (16)
GCSE's

Jack's mock results were an E in English Language as well as a D in literature and he wanted to do Economics A level which required a B grade in his final GCSE. Jack had two hours of tuition per week from January to May. He enjoyed going (this surprised me as he hated English before the sessions) and had a new found likeness for literacy. He received a B in both language and literature and can now do A level economics. Jack related very well to David- this made learning easier for Jack and he obtained the grades he needed. His teachers at school noticed a marked improvement in his work when he was having tuition.

Oliver was falling behind in Math's and English. I am very happy to say that his confidence and his ability to retain what David teaches him has improved greatly. His teachers at school have also commented on his marked improvement and he now feels a sense of achievement in everything he does- he also speaks of making David proud. David was/is exactly what I was looking for. Oliver doesn't seem to think about his lesson as lesson, he genuinely enjoys spending Saturday mornings at David's as he now really wants to improve himself! Wow!!!

I have a First Class law degree from the University of Oxford and have almost 10 years of tutoring experience. At university, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Oxford University Undergraduate Law Journal. During my time at Oxford, I also published an article in the journal which was awarded the 'Best Private Law' prize, as adjudicated by the former President of the Supreme Court, Lord Neuberger. I also regularly won prizes for my academic work. Alongside my academics, I also mentored several students with various access schemes and assisted with outreach programmes.

I have been tutoring law to undergraduates from diverse law schools for the past three years. We have covered core subjects such as Tort, Land and EU law in the run up to exams. My teaching is inclusive by design and evidence-led. I train cross-disciplinary STEM thinking informed by Cognitive Neuroscience and Educational Psychology to build synoptic fluency, so students meet top-band descriptors and develop lasting academic confidence.

This highly structured approach has proved especially effective for GCSE students balancing demanding commitments in film, television, the West End, elite dance, football, and international tennis. Working across locations and time zones has refined my high-impact system that secures curriculum coverage, strengthens exam mastery, and aligns homework and practice with intensive training demands and travel commitments.

The same approach has also shaped my work through the Access Project and the National Tutoring Programme, where I have specialised in accelerating the progress of high-potential students from diverse backgrounds. In Psychology and other essay-based subjects (incl. History), I strengthen the transition from knowledge to application and evaluation, enabling students to critique evidence with examiner-level depth. Most marks are lost in Geography and data-rich subjects, when students can't execute on graphs and figures, so I teach consistent structures for describing trends, analysing processes, interpreting implications, and evaluating reliability, so graphs and figures become scoring opportunities rather than weak points.

The transfer-based strategies extend into Science and Maths. In Science, I specialise in practical, investigative, and data-response questions, teaching students to interpret experimental design and construct answers that boost grades. The cross-topic approach translates directly into Maths, connecting algebra, number, and geometry in a clear show / prove sequence, securing method marks through reasoning rather than guesswork.

That same discipline carries into English Language and Literature, which cannot be mastered through rote instruction alone, but through targeted practice and feedback. Strong reading comes before strong writing, so I guide students through detailed, line-by-line analysis of set poems, plays, and novels to deepen understanding, refine interpretation, and strengthen written response. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, for example, I take students through the most important moments in the text, then show them how to trace the deeper patterns, themes, and writer's methods that shape the novel.

I then coach each student by turning their written drafts into repeatable top-band blueprints aligned to their thinking style. We target strengths, close next-step gaps, and train students to produce argument-led responses with a clear thesis, embedded evidence, and precise analysis of method and effect. The goal is not just stronger writing in one essay, but independent control of high-quality responses under time pressure to maximise marks.

To keep the Thinking That Transfers Framework aligned with current educational evidence, I continually draw on research in Cognitive Neuroscience, Educational Psychology, and Behavioural Science, particularly in memory, metacognition, and effective teacher-student interaction.

• Question-Level Diagnosis: A precise diagnostic that identifies exactly why marks are being lost, from knowledge and application gaps to exam technique weaknesses, misconceptions, and reasoning breakdowns, so we can target the highest-impact improvements first.

• Weekly Progress: Turns those findings into specification-aligned weekly mastery checkpoints, so progress stays trackable and consistent.

• Concept Mastery: Strengthens long-term recall and understanding using evidence-led routines and explicit modelling of concepts. In Science, this includes lab practical thinking: variables, method, data handling, and evaluation.

• Written Consolidation: Students write notes in their own words during and between lessons, so learning is actively processed. This strengthens understanding, sharpens critical thinking, and reveals uncertainty early, before misconceptions become embedded. This allows students to follow the logic of each concept.

My online classroom is highly interactive and visually structured. Through PowerPoint presentations, annotated examples, and detailed explanations, students see abstract content unfold in real time, making it easier to connect ideas across topics, retain key knowledge, and apply it with confidence.

• A complimentary first lesson is available exclusively for Year 3 students starting 11+ entrance exam preparation.

• Lessons are confirmed only once payment has been received. For all tuition bookings, payment must be received in advance by the date stated on the invoice. If payment is not received, the lesson slot may be released to another student on the waiting list.

• Resources created by the tutor remain the intellectual property of the tutor. Third-party or licensed resources remain the property of their respective owners. Copying, recording lessons, taking screenshots, sharing, reproducing, or distributing lesson materials is not permitted. Students are encouraged to make their own notes for personal study only.

• To support lesson quality, focus, and student engagement, students are expected to keep their camera on during online lessons, unless otherwise agreed in writing.

• All online sessions are recorded for safeguarding and quality assurance purposes.

• Clients will be notified in writing of any updates to these terms and conditions.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching children from EYFS through to Year 6, and I now also tutor GCSE Maths.

Outside of teaching, I am married, a proud mum of two children who are both now at university, and owner of a small dog who keeps me busy with daily walks! Having raised my own children through school, exams and university applications, I understand the challenges that families can face and the importance of providing encouragement as well as academic support.

Teaching Experience:
As an experienced teacher with over 25 years in education, I have taught and supported learners across the full primary age range, from EYFS to Year 6. I now combine this expertise with GCSE Maths tutoring, helping pupils close gaps in knowledge, improve grades and develop confidence in their abilities.

Tutoring Approach:
My lessons are designed to be engaging, supportive and tailored to the individual needs of each student. With over 25 years of classroom teaching experience across EYFS to Year 6, and more recent experience tutoring GCSE Maths, I understand how to adapt my teaching style to help learners of all abilities build confidence and make progress.
At the start of our work together, I assess each student's strengths, areas for development and preferred learning style so that lessons can be carefully tailored to their specific goals. Whether a child needs support in building strong foundations in Maths and English, preparation for SATs, 11+ or 13+ entrance examinations, additional challenge in primary subjects, or targeted help to improve their GCSE Maths grade, every lesson is designed to meet their needs.
Whether on-line or in-person, I create a positive learning experience where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks and learning from mistakes. Lessons are interactive and include clear explanations, worked examples, guided practice and independent tasks. I use a variety of resources and teaching strategies to keep learning enjoyable and accessible, enjoyable and effective.
Feedback is regularly given so progress can be tracked and achievements celebrated. Alongside improving academic outcomes, I aim to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning. My goal is to equip every student with the skills and self-belief they need to become successful, independent learners and achieve their full potential.
