Tutoring in School
After leaving full time teaching, I have worked in quite a number of different Primary Schools tutoring pupils who have fallen behind with their Maths or English studies. This has been both on a 121 basis as well as tutoring small groups of pupils.
A recent block of work in school involved working four days per week at a local Primary School in Crawley from January to the end of May. Not only did I work with pupils on a 121 basis but also in a small group setting assisting them with Maths and English, I also took a large group of pupils from Year 6 every morning to help prepare them for their SATS papers. During this time, I worked with pupils from each of the eight classes within the KS2 section of the school preparing all of my own lessons based on the work each teacher asked me to focus on with the pupils.

Since March 2026 I have worked in a local secondary school in Horsham tutoring Year 11 pupils on the spectrum for autism for Entry Level 3 Maths, Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 Maths and GCSE Foundation Maths up to and including Grade 5. All of this work has been in preparation towards their exams.
Due to the work completed in the school since March, I have been asked to continue tutoring Maths in the school in September with Year 11 pupils tutoring three sessions per week on a 1:1 basis.

Working with pupils who are not in school
During the last 12 years I have also worked with pupils who for a variety of reasons, are not in full time education. This has been anything from two to three hours per day varying between one day per week to four days per week. Although the age of the pupils has been between 7 to 16 years, they have all been within the KS2 bracket of learning for Maths and English. This work has normally taken place at the pupils care home, in their foster parents home or occasionally, in their own home.

Present Private Tutoring Work
I have just finished working with a Year 4 pupil tutoring him 1 hour per week for Maths and tutoring a Year 6 pupil in Maths for two hours per week. As well as the work with Year 11 pupils in school I am also presently working with a 14 year old pupil assisting him with maths and English at KS2 level. In addition I am working with a year 11 pupil assisting her with Foundation Level GCSE maths.

Teaching Experience:
Over 15 years private tutoring experience tutoring pupils of a wide range of ability in their own homes after school. This has included assisting children both with their Maths and English KS2.

My teaching approach to tutoring varies from objective to objective. Languages should always be taught in a full immersion style, especially when it is targeting groups of people who are doing it for either vocational or personal reasons.
Tutoring of subjects such as languages with an objective such as GCSE or Highers or indeed University exams must take into account the syllabus that students must complete in order to reach their target: i.e. pass exams and, at the same time, learn in an effective though 'unforgettable' way. The majority of classes must be delivered in the target language, however in order to meet timing of syllabus coverage and exams some of the concept must be strengthened in the student's language.
In an ideal world, where no exams or timed targets exist, then tutoring of a language should happen 100% in the target language.

I am a proactive, dedicated teacher hailing from Montpellier, southern France, with a passion for teaching. I completed a PhD in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2018, and became an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE). My research portfolio contains a dozen publications in peer-reviewed outlets, including Academia Letters, The European Journal of American Culture and The Literary Encyclopedia, and a research monograph about two writers from the Beat generation - Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg - published by Peter Lang in May 2022, which has been nominated this year for a BSA Book Award. I'm an experienced primary educator with over 30 years experience. I will work alongside your child and support them in their learning. Each child is an individual, so there is no 'one size fits all' that matches every child's needs. I will ensure your child has an individualised learning programme that supports his/ her requirements.

I have been teaching since 1987. I have experience from EYFS through to Year 6 teaching the Primary Curriculum. I have experience of coordinating various subjects in schools, from Design Technology to being Special Education Needs coordinator. Teaching Experience:
I have experience working across the primary age range, specifically in Nursery and Years 2, 3, 4, and 5. This has given me a deep understanding of the EYFS framework and the Key Stage 1 and 2 National Curriculum. In my time in Year 4, I have successfully supported students through assessment periods, tailoring my support to help them achieve their learning targets in English and Maths. I am comfortable adapting my style for younger learners (using play-based learning) as well as older students (focusing on exam technique and deeper comprehension).

My approach is student-centered and adaptive. I begin by assessing a student's current level to identify any specific gaps in their knowledge. From there, I scaffold their learning to build confidence and bridge those gaps, ensuring they meet age-related expectations. I am a highly qualified, very experienced tutor of all aspects of English, with many testimionials (please ask for details). I teach all abilities and levels, and have high standards both professionally and personally. I teach lower secondary, GCSE and IGCSE (all boards), A level English Literature, English Language, and also Language and Literature. I also offer all aspects of undergraduate English including critical theory and essay/dissertation writing.

I teach both in person and online (currently on Microsoft Teams).

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching English for 25 years, across a range of levels and contexts, and have worked as an A level examiner (senior and principal) for over 15 years. I ran the GCSE provision in a local FE college for 5 years, along with A level and Access to HE teaching at the same college. While I studied for my PhD (in Shakespeare's language) at the University of Birmingham I taught both Shakespeare and introduction to Linguistics at that university and several others in the region, at undergraduate and masters level. I began full time tutoring in 2011, teaching a wide range of levels, from lower secondary to A level and undergraduate. I have high success rates in all of these. I have worked successfully many times with dyslexic students.

Tutoring Approach:
Although I have considerable subject knowledge and experience of delivering all aspects of English, I have learned over the decades that understanding my students and their needs is what makes the most difference. Developing their confidence makes it possible for them to learn more successfully, as I see year after year. English teachers in schools have challenges and pressures that mean they cannot always give individual attention to their students, meaning that they don't get the feedback or support they need. I aim to do just that: to tailor my approach to their individual needs, and work with them towards their goals.
