I am a qualified teacher with 2 children. I've been teaching for over 20 years at a variety of schools within Hampshire and across the primary phase. I tutor mainly Maths and English and over the past 7 years I have successfully tutored children through their SAT's exams.

Confidence is often the stumbling block for learners, and I always encourage all of my students to feel an early sense of achievement. Enabling students to see real progress quickly is essential to the building of self-esteem. I am very approachable and my style of teaching is relaxed and friendly. I have been a teacher since 1976. I have taught all age groups, from nursery to A Level. Teaching is a wonderful and totally satisfying vocation. Tutoring Approach:
Students can learn by either visiting my home or at a distance using Skype. Every student is assessed as an individual and the content of their course tailored to their needs. I test my students periodically to ensure progress is going smoothly; also testing is a good way for students to observe their own progress. We use a variety of materials: books for writing and reading in English, and for revision in Maths; the computer for visual skills and games, listening and speaking is a major part of the programme for EFL students. Children learn in different ways, and I like to offer my students visual, auditory and kinetic tools, we can see which is most comfortable for the individual. The speed of learning is not as important as the confidence of the individual and their inspiration and motivation to progress.

When I was a boy I was taught by people who were larger-than-life characters who dominated the classroom. They made clear to us boys what was expected of us and that if we didn't make the effort we would simply not achieve the rewards.

As a teacher, I share the same ethos. I expect pupils to follow my lead and work to the best of their ability.

I spend a lot of time reading and thinking.

I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said that 2% of people think, 3% think they think and 95% would rather die than do any thinking at all!

Sadly, I think that over the last thirty years dumbing down and inflated grades have shown how accurate Shaw's assessment was.

I see my role as one of reversing the tide of apathy and mediocrity and encouraging pupils to value themselves as individuals each with unique potential.

I finally achieved my educational potential because I came to see intellectual growth as the only sure path to happiness and fulfilment.

After teaching in the UK Primary and Secondary sectors as well as managing English and History departments in three international schools overseas, I now devote my time exclusively to private tuition.

Tutoring Approach:
My experience has led me to believe that one-to-one tuition is the best way to educate pupils. It brings them to the realisation that the whole point of education really is to set us free. It's not easy for a student to discover this when confined every day in a class of 30 or more others! Learning to think independently as an individual, and to read and write fluently enables pupils to participate fully in society, to achieve their full potential and thereby become happy, confident adults. Once the student is enthused and inspired by a tutor to think for themselves there is only one way forward.

I like to encourage pupils to develop independent thinking and logical analysis. Too many schools are teaching the children WHAT to think when they should be teaching them HOW to think. Naturally, many pupils become disengaged and even some of the most talented are simply going through the motions rather than actually studying. This lack of motivation together with highly inflated grades means that many of our youngsters are leaving school with minimal reading and writing skills. Indeed, few now have the aptitude for doing much reading, thinking or writing at all.

I like to build up the student's confidence by establishing their strengths first. Thereafter I identify weaknesses and gauge the student's awareness of them and motivation to put them right. Above all, I encourage my students to read widely and with full concentration. My best students learn to read closely and publish their reviews on Amazon. Aside from the huge adrenaline run, the boost in confidence and proficiency students get from seeing their writing in print is awesome to behold!

To put it simply, when they're reading they start succeeding!

Homework set weekly by me will always involve reading, thinking and writing. My feedback will always concentrate on reinforcing the idea that the writing process never ends with the last full stop. I expect students to read back their work to ensure that their writing communicates their meaning clearly and fluently. Editing with the focus on making the right word choices, organising sentences with the words in the right order and structuring longer writing assignments into coherent paragraphs are all priorities schools are increasingly neglecting thereby greatly hindering the life chances of their pupils..

Once the student and I have agreed which areas need improvement we use lesson time to extend the student's competence and skills by undertaking thinking and written assignments that allow the student to develop these.

Weekly homework set will advance and reinforce the skills the student has been encouraged to bring to the lesson.

I have tutored and homeschooled online and in person since 2012 in KS2 Literacy and Literature, 11+ & 13+ examinations, KS3 literacy, and GCSE/A Level examinations in English Language and English Literature across the full range of exam boards. I approach tutoring with patience and enthusiasm, focusing on exam technique to prepare the student for GCSE or A Level English Literature and/or GCSE English Language exams. I have always been naturally inclined to support others and to share my passion for English Literature and Language. From my sister teaching me to read when I was younger, to my English teacher supporting me throughout my 7 years of education at school, I understand the importance of patience and personal passion for your chosen subject.

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored both Literature and Language, providing tailored sessions and outlining a clear and structured tuition plan for the student. Personalising my teaching to each individual student has proven to improve not only grades but also confidence, which encourages better performance and overall an enjoyable learning experience. Furthermore, I have also taught in classrooms teaching English abroad, an experience which greatly developed my teaching techniques and approach.

Furthermore, I have a personal passion for creative writing, which I am passionate for sharing with my students to prepare them for the often heavy-weighted creative writing questions on their GCSE language paper. I was awarded the Athenaeum Young Writers' Award in 2023, and since then I have been published in numerous anthologies for both fiction and poetry.

Tutoring Approach:
I provide a completely tailored approach to tuition, as every student's needs are personal. I work closely with my students to develop a learning experience that is most beneficial to them, rather than a generalised structure like that within a classroom setting. My sessions are interactive and productive without being overwhelming, focusing on developing skills over a number of sessions so that come exam time, the student is well prepared and confident.

Hello, I'm Alex! I'm a highly experienced English tutor, educator and creative writing coach. I specialise in targeted GCSE and A-Level exam preparation for the AQA, Eduqas, OCR, and Edexcel exam boards. My focus is on delivering measurable results.

While I focus heavily on exam cohorts, I also offer foundational support for KS2 students, frequently mentoring learners all the way through to their A-Levels.

I graduated from Falmouth University with a First-Class degree in English in 2018. Alongside private tutoring, I am also a widely published poet and creative writing coach.

Teaching Experience:
I've been tutoring and working in educational settings for a decade.

Following graduation and prior to the pandemic, I began working in schools as a teaching assistant and educational support worker in preparation for my teacher training.

Ultimately, I decided that tutoring suited me more than classroom teaching during the pandemic. I started working for the national tutoring program, and haven't looked back since.

I've helped students of all levels improve, but my primary expertise is helping GCSE, AS and A level students improve their grades across all exam boards. I also have extensive experience with IGCSE, both Edexcel and Cambridge. I believe I am one of the top tutors in my field in this area.

Due to my practice as a poet, I have also worked with a number of adult students on creative projects, from assembling poetry collections to novel writing, a practice I enjoy immensley.

I am also a trainee psychotherapist.

Tutoring Approach:
Many students who come to see me are already quite advanced in their core skills, but we often find that this does not always translate into consistently high or predictable results. In these cases, my role is to help students adapt and refine their existing abilities to meet the specific demands of their exam board. This is about developing the know-how to turn strong English into high-scoring exam responses: understanding the assessment objectives in detail, recognising precisely what each objective requires, and learning how to shape writing so that it consistently targets and fulfils them. The aim is to help students understand how to maximise the effectiveness of their ideas, analysis and argument so that their existing abilities translate into the marks they are capable of achieving.

Other students may need more targeted support with deficiencies in core skills such as analysis, evaluation, inference, contextual integration or the confident use of literary theory. These students can benefit from in-depth, expert lessons and carefully tailored resources designed to build those skills while also unlocking some of the more challenging texts and concepts within their syllabus. My approach is always adapted to the individual student: identifying precisely where greater understanding, practice or confidence is needed and addressing those areas systematically.

Whatever a student's starting point or requirements, my approach is fundamentally student-centred. I see myself less as a traditional teacher and more as a facilitator of learning: someone whose job is to help students become increasingly independent, thoughtful and confident thinkers. Ultimately, I want students to learn how to think for themselves rather than simply reproduce what they have been taught. This is particularly important in English and the humanities, where the ability to form, develop and defend one's own ideas is not only intellectually valuable but consistently rewarded in assessment.
