I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

With the theory, I often look through past papers with the student to establish common questions and work to get the most succinct and correct answer. I aim to make the students complete the challenges themselves as much as possible - it is not my intention to create solutions for coursework/assignments for students to use as their own. Tutoring Approach:
I approach every assignment by first getting to know every potential student's requirements (i.e. the areas of their studies that they find very difficult to handle). Working with the student, I concentrate on those areas with a view to getting them ready for their exams.

GCSE & A-Level Computer Science Specialist (OCR Examiner)

I am Head of Computing and an official OCR GCSE Paper 2 Examiner (graded Excellent). I help ambitious students unlock the top grades they're truly capable of.

My Results:
The majority of my GCSE students achieve grades 7-9
Last year, my A-level OCR Paper 2 students averaged 99.6 out of 140 - significantly above the typical average

I teach both OCR and Edexcel at GCSE, with a sharp focus on exam technique and practical skills. At A-level I specialise in OCR, particularly algorithms, Big O notation, and the extended questions that separate good students from the very best.

My teaching combines deep subject knowledge with real examiner insight - helping students understand exactly what top marks require and how to deliver them under pressure.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching since 2010 and have been Head of Computing since 2012. I launched and have led the Edexcel GCSE Computer Science course since 2013 and have taught OCR A-level Computer Science since its introduction.

Since 2018 I have been an official OCR examiner for GCSE Paper 2, and in the 2025 series I was graded as marking to an 'Excellent' standard.

My lessons are structured, focused, and results-driven. I combine clear, engaging teaching with targeted exam practice to help students develop both deep understanding and strong exam technique.

Currently teaching Computer Science and Mathematics at Oxford International College Brighton, covering the Cambridge International curriculum for Years 10-13 (iGCSE and AS/A Level).

Last year, 60% of my Year 11 students achieved Grades 7-9 (A to A* equivalent) for their IGCSE Computer Science exams.

- Working through and verbally explaining past paper questions in a certain topic: this strategy allows the tutee to consolidate their understanding of any complex topic very effectively, as it clearly shows if there is a discrepancy between the quality of their written work and verbal explanations

- Getting to know the tutee's personal interests and hobbies, as this will allow me (as a tutor) to draw crucial connections that help them see where a concept is applied in their daily life (e.g. projectile motion and parabolas in the motions of flying balls in sports, data structures and algorithms being used in various online games of today...)

- Frequent questioning to make sure the sessions involve maximum engagement and active learning from the tutee's side: the questions may involve checking understanding, complex reasoning, fact verification and more
