I am an independent tutor with a strong scientific background and have lived in England since Aug 1965. Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. We have a son and a daughter; both graduated from Universities in Manchester. Following my voluntary redundancy from AstraZeneca, (Jun 2008), I am now a self-employed Tutor / Consultant. During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. During 2005/6, I mentored a pupil (Year 10/11) at St. Peter's High School, Longsight, organised by the University of Manchester. I am a UK qualified teacher with 20+ years' teaching experience. I graduated from Loughborough University with a BSc (Hons) in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2003 and a year later completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the same university. I've found in the past that the best approach to tutoring is to be very positive and flexible. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.

As a recently retired Chartered Engineer I'm looking to help students to improve, and gain confidence in, their maths or science skills. This might be helping with subjects that the student finds difficult, catching up with missed work, assisting with coursework, or stretching a budding genius

Teaching Experience:
I have been providing personal tuition to students for about 10 years. I only take on a couple of students at a time so that I can spend enough time with them. Most of my students have come to me through word of mouth.

Try to understand what the student finds difficult and focus on the big issues.

I hold two Master's degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, earned in France and South Africa respectively. My strong academic and engineering background has given me an excellent understanding of Mathematics and Physics and their practical applications.

Teaching Experience:
I have over 15 years of experience teaching Mathematics and Physics to students of different ages, abilities and academic levels. I have supported students in developing their subject knowledge, improving their problem-solving skills and preparing effectively for examinations. I am comfortable working with students who need additional support as well as those who want to challenge themselves and achieve higher grades.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching approach is patient, encouraging and tailored to each student's individual needs. I believe students learn best when complex ideas are explained clearly and broken down into manageable steps. I use practical examples, guided problem-solving and regular practice to help students develop a strong understanding of the subject. My aim is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to build their confidence, curiosity and independence as learners.
