Tutoring Approach:
I follow the National Curriculum, with set lesson plans for each tutor session.

We will follow a learning plan that will run alongside school teaching. I do not help with school homework on a regular basis. Instead, I use the time I spend with each student, to improve their areas of weakness, so that they can do their homework and coursework / assignments with confidence themselves.

Lesson 1 is always a discussion of what the student / parents wish to achieve, along with an assessment of the students current capabilities. If you would like the first lesson to be more productive, I can send the assessment to be completed before the first class. I am a graduate in Physics with Astrophysics, which was a four year degree, which included me living and learning in Italy. My degree was challenging yet enjoyable, and contained a lot of Maths, which to me was great! As a born communicator writing and teaching have always appealed, and having spent the last decade tutoring and working for the Institute of Physics, I can definitely say I enjoy it as much now as I did when I started.. I also have a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language.

For the last 12 years I have taught a wide variety of learners from the age of 6 all the way up to 45! For example, I encourage students to underline keywords in questions and, particularly in maths and science, to draw diagrams to help them visualise problems. When it comes to exam technique I teach students precisely how to answer certain styles of question to score full marks and show as much working wherever possible. This is not only a very important skill to have to get good grades, but it will help them develop more of an understanding of the problems they are solving.

I like finding out how the world around me works, and am keen to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others. I also enjoy making or tinkering with things - I have customised a button accordion to play bass notes more flexibly, and have added extra buttons to video game controllers. In school I designed and constructed a solar-powered light of adjustable brightness. Patterns appeal to me. When I am not involved in science, I do Scottish Country Dancing, as well as many other genres of folk dancing with intricate symmetrical dance figures. My study of several languages, including Latin and German, allows me to identify parts of scientific terms that I can use to help my students understand them - for instance a recently discovered non-repeating tile is named Einstein not after the physicist but because only one ('ein') type of tile or stone ('stein') is needed to make the pattern. I find Richard Feynman inspiring. He himself got into science through tinkering and discussions with his father about how things worked. He spoke on beauty in nature, and that scientific understanding only enhances its appreciation - as well as seeing the beauty of a flower, a scientist can also wonder at its smaller structure, and how it developed to attract insects to pollinate it. Teaching Experience:
I have three years' experience conducting tutorials in Materials Science at Cambridge University, having myself studied Natural Sciences there, including Physics and Chemistry. In addition to the course material provided by the university and my own worked solutions to the problems, I used physical models in the teaching that I had made myself.

In 2018, I taught the Maths and Physics component of the NCC International Foundation Programme for Engineers (of around GCSE/A-level level) at the Star Exeter language school.

Since 2018 I have tutored science and maths independently and for local authorities.One of my pupils has been with me since 2018 - starting with GCSE Physics, and progressing through A Level Biology to finance for adult life.
