I have successfully taught and tutored pupils for 11 plus and 13 plus entrance exams, as well as for GCSE's in both Maths and all three Sciences, as well as Combined Science, and for A level Biology and Chemistry.

I have also 15 years GCSE and A level Science examiner marking experience, which allows me to support and explain to pupils what examiners are looking for within exam question answers.

Tutoring Approach:
I have a detailed knowledge of all current syllabus for GCSE Sciences, Maths, (as well as Maths and Science IGCSE, Functional Skills, and BTEC), and all current A level Chemistry and Biology syllabus's. I use a combination of theory, exam practice questions, past paper questions, and workbooks in the lessons, to improve pupil confidence with exam technique, and focus on exam skills.

In addition, I adapt my teaching methods to support the pupils learning needs and help to identify areas of study in which they need help to improve. I also look at revision methods and planning revision timetables with pupils to help them find the option which works best for their learning needs.

I have twenty-eight years teaching experience with a BSC Hons degree in Biological and Medicinal Chemistry and a Master's degree in Education leadership. I have been Head of Science for several years and have a vast amount of experience preparing students for examinations at GCSE and A level. I have taught Chemistry and Biology up to A-Level. I also teach GCSE combined and separate sciences including GCSE Physics. I am based in the Colchester area and willing to travel to students as required. As well as face to face teaching, I also have considerable experience in online teaching, which included teaching 15 students collectively online throughout the lockdown period and through individual online private tuition.

I take a clear, structured and confidence building approach to tutoring, designed to help learners understand how the concepts in Science and Chemistry work, not just memorise them. My sessions focus on breaking complex concepts into simple, logical steps, using real world examples and explanations so students can understand the overall picture as well as the specific finer details. I specialise in helping students who feel they "missed something" the first time around and allow them to believe in their own ability whether that is at GCSE, A level, or returning to science after a long break.
For adult learners, I offer a supportive and non-judgemental environment that moves at the right pace while still being ambitious for the individual. My goal is always the same: to help students feel capable, prepared, and genuinely confident in their scientific thinking. Hi! I'm Lucy, and I'm currently studying for my biochemistry degree at the University of Sussex. I have a passion for science, and want to share this with others, and hopefully help them with their own studies.
Outside of this, I am very creative. I enjoy playing piano, singing, folding origami and watercolour painting.
Outside of term time I live in the Oxfordshire countryside, and love taking walks around the places that I live.

I tutored for 2 years during my A level studies, in which I took biology, chemistry and maths. I have experience tutoring these 3 subjects, especially maths, and am able to tutor all of these to GCSE level, as well as other subjects to lower levels. I am a warm, engaging individual who loves working with a variety of people. I am currently a secondary school biology teacher, so am well used to working under pressure in a busy working environment. I have excellent creative and organisational skills; I currently plan and prepare lessons that meet every point on the specification from the exam board, whilst also tailoring it to my pupils' individual needs and attitudes.

I often reflect on how I could approach a scenario differently in the future, or how to continue a positive relationship, and will approach other teachers for advice if I have not found the right approach for a certain child yet.
I expect every pupil under my care to achieve to their own full potential, and to take responsibility for getting themselves there.
I love trying new things and I am very willing to change my approach if a pupil is not understanding, or already has mastery of what I had planned. Very approachable, calm and patient. Having a young son myself, I understand the challenges of educating different individuals and needing to adapt the style to suit the learner. I spent a number of years living in Bahrain, and as such am very used to working within a multicultural environment.

I have spent the past 20 years of my career working in the Pharmaceutical industry leading a team of chemists in the development of analytical methods to support new therapeutic treatments. I also worked within the external training team as a tutor to deliver training sessions within my specialism, training many delegates from other companies, which spanned a very large age range. Additionally, I wrote a number of articles and White papers on several key areas of chemical analysis within the Pharma industry, as well as providing support to business marketing.

As a person I am methodical, tenacious and have an eye for detail.
I have very good communication skills and always focus upon positive attributes to build confidence in weaker areas. I would conduct an initial evaluation of subject knowledge to ensure that any gaps present from an earlier stage in their subject are filled before moving onto further study.

Teaching Experience:
Extensive tutoring experience as detailed above. I was also regularly involved in mentoring new graduates within my team.

Tutoring Approach:
As eluded to above, I am acutely aware of the different styles needed to suit different individuals. Therefore I avoid a 'one size fits all' approach, ensuring that I adapt to suit each individual. I am always keen to evaluate current knowledge and identify gaps that will prevent effective learning in areas of weakness. I am also of the opinion that everyone has potential; it is fundamentally important to build confidence in demonstrating to the tutee what they already know and to demonstrate progress that they are making along the way. With my industrial experience my style will always involve real examples of chemistry in action.
