I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning. I also set plenty of work and get them to do past papers which I send to them in the first week. I then take these away and mark them in my own time and return with a deeper view of where they are going wrong after they have been taught. Most marks are lost in Geography and data-rich subjects, when students can't execute on graphs and figures, so I teach consistent structures for describing trends, analysing processes, interpreting implications, and evaluating reliability, so graphs and figures become scoring opportunities rather than weak points.

The transfer-based strategies extend into Science and Maths. In Science, I specialise in practical, investigative, and data-response questions, teaching students to interpret experimental design and construct answers that boost grades. The cross-topic approach translates directly into Maths, connecting algebra, number, and geometry in a clear show / prove sequence, securing method marks through reasoning rather than guesswork.

That same discipline carries into English Language and Literature, which cannot be mastered through rote instruction alone, but through targeted practice and feedback. Strong reading comes before strong writing, so I guide students through detailed, line-by-line analysis of set poems, plays, and novels to deepen understanding, refine interpretation, and strengthen written response. In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, for example, I take students through the most important moments in the text, then show them how to trace the deeper patterns, themes, and writer's methods that shape the novel.

I then coach each student by turning their written drafts into repeatable top-band blueprints aligned to their thinking style. The 1 to 1 dynamic of tutoring provides a great opportunity for real connection with the student, which then facilitates much better progress through mutual understanding and communication. I`ve found the more casual approach you get from teaching one student in their own home gives them so much more confidence and security than they have at school which makes it so much easier to understand their problems and work through things together.

Teaching Experience:
I have experience teaching Maths and Science in several schools in Derbyshire and south Yorkshire, and have been tutoring privately for the last two years. I attained a BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Nottingham and A*A*AA is Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Further Maths at A-level.

I have a broad range of experience tutoring in different settings and scenarios: online and in-person, KS3, GCSE and A-Level, Foundation and Higher Tiers, relaxed weekly or Bi-weekly sessions, intensive exam prep and even teaching in a home-school environment.

Tutoring Approach:
I opt for a more relaxed approach as I find student comfortability to be the most important factor for learning. Sessions are very interactive with the idea of helping the student understand where they are going wrong and what gaps they have. I am very analytical behind the scenes, building a bespoke portfolio that will inform the direction of future sessions.

I think students find the casual conversational learning to be a breath of fresh air. Many feel cramped and uncomfortable in a classroom so being able to just discuss things freely with no fear of judgement is a huge help. In my experience students always undersell themselves, so I make a point out of showing them how much they already know, which helps them feel more confident from the offset

Personal Description:
As a recently retired Chartered Engineer I'm looking to help students to improve, and gain confidence in, their maths or science skills. This might be helping with subjects that the student finds difficult, catching up with missed work, assisting with coursework, or stretching a budding genius

Teaching Experience:
I have been providing personal tuition to students for about 10 years. I only take on a couple of students at a time so that I can spend enough time with them. Most of my students have come to me through word of mouth.

Tutoring Approach:
Try to understand what the student finds difficult and focus on the big issues.
