I have 30 years experience of teaching Chemistry and Biology at all levels up to A Level, and I am still teaching. This includes 7 years as Head of Department, and I am currently teaching A-Level Chemistry and Biology, plus Access courses, at a central London college.

I have 17 years experience as an examiner for OCR, Edexcel and AQA in both Chemistry and Biology at A Level and GCSE Science. I am familiar with all major exam boards in Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science. I have also been a personal tutor for the past 28 years.

In all areas I have had excellent success and can supply references if asked. I hold an up to date DRB certificate. I am considered to be patient and understanding, but I can also be a motivator when required to help students reach their maximum potential.

Online tutoring

If you are unable to travel to me, I also tutor online..I am very experienced in online tutoring. Since the lockdown I have taught hundreds of hours online and have found it to be nearly as effective as face to face teaching. I am proficient in the use of different software platforms including two way online whiteboards, PowerPoint, Word, Acrobat PDF and document cameras. This allows lessons to be clear, interactive and well resourced whether we are working through revision notes, past papers or complex diagrams.

All that I can say is that Ellie is fantastic. When she was teaching myself and my brother A Level Chemistry, she always gave short, concise explanations of concepts in a way that we easily understood. Also, she gave us past paper questions after each topic so that we had plenty of practice at exam technique. She marked these and sent us feedback on what to improve on. This meant that when it came around to do our exams, we were fully prepared for them and confident that we could do well. Teaching Experience:
Since 2010, I have been tutoring English, Maths and the individual Sciences; Biology, Chemistry & Physics.

I have taught at both primary- and secondary-school levels, with my students ranging between the ages of 6 and 16.

I can also help with entrance examinations for secondary school (including verbal and non-verbal reasoning), and I have provided mentorship and coaching when it comes to UCAS application forms, personal statements and CV writing.

Whilst I enjoyed some of the subjects at school, certain subjects and topics (including Maths!) didn't come naturally to me. I achieved 7A*s and 5As at GCSE and studied Maths, Biology & Chemistry at A-Level.

Tutoring Approach:
I have a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology and my tutoring approach is a student-centred one. My experience covers tutoring, mentoring and coaching and I use a combination of the three in my work.

I am yet to come across a student who doesn't possess the potential to improve. More often than not, it is the large class sizes at school, or a teacher whose approach isn't the right fit, which explains why a student doesn't understand a particular subject, or particular topics within that subject.

Through the 1-to-1 work I do with students, not only have I witnessed some remarkable grade improvements but also some amazing transformations in confidence. I strongly feel that the work I do is more than merely improving grades for exams.

⭐ My philosophy is that if you are struggling with a particular subject or topic, it's not your fault and there's nothing wrong with you. It simply means you've not been taught in a way that makes sense to you (or you've not been given the time and attention to be taught properly - in a big class and with the pressures on teachers to deliver an extensive curriculum).

⭐ I'm based near Twickenham/Teddington/Kingston and offer tutoring in-person and online (my preference is in-person where possible, as this tends to work best for the tutoring relationship and the outcomes that can be achieved).

Tutoring Approach:
The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. To do that, as tutor, I will facilitate their learning on a 1 to 1 basis so that they may gain a deeper and greater depth of knowledge of the subject. I will provide the subject knowledge expertise and transfer my knowledge to the tutee in a manner and at a level that is appropriate to the tutee but pushing them beyond their limits to the next stage. To achieve that grade "A*" a GCSE tutee should be able to understand basic AS Level material. For an A Level tutee to achieve the highest grades at A Level they should be able to cope with University first year material with ease. It is my aim to enable my tutees to achieve these goals.

I will work to improve the child's self esteem, self belief and confidence in their ability to do well. As a trained hypnotherapist I am particularly qualified to boost a child's self-esteem. Once the tutee is confident in their subject knowledge, then we will work on exam techniques and exam practice in order to enable the tutee to ace the exams and significantly improve their grades.

I will work with each tutee on an individual basis and adjust the tuition lessons to their needs. There is no standard one size fits all model with me. Homework will be set to enable the subject matter to be reinforced with some self-learning at home. Exam practice will be key to enable the tutee to become proficient in their exams and achieve the highest grades. Exam technique contributes significantly towards exam success. We will always work to enable the tutee to AIM HIGHER.

I am also able to guide sixth formers with their UCAS applications and personal statements.

At all times parents will be involved with the learning of their child so that they may guide and support their child's education and monitor progress. Parental involvement is also a major factor in the child's success.

For the science lessons my aim is to include as much practical work as is possible, where this is feasible in a tuition setting, keeping safety of the child of paramount importance.

If your child is quiet and shy or is in a mediocre class or is just coasting along or is struggling to achieve the grades required to get into the University course of their choice, whether it is Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Engineering, Computing, Optometry or other science course, then tuition with myself will enable them to boost their grades and give them the advantage that they need. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. A good tutor will help guide tutees who want to learn to get ahead and avoid becoming disinterested or bored. Why leave it to chance?

It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. A tuition boost will enable them to get into a better school or a higher stream set so that they do not have to struggle or get left behind when the come to do their GCSE and A Levels.

I also have experience of vocational courses such as the BTEC and Applied Science courses and I am able to provide the additional guidance and support required to ensure that your child achieves Distinctions rather than passes in their assignments. It is not my policy to do the tutee's coursework for them but to help, guide and support their research and provide constructive feedback.

Tutees will be required to complete all assessments and homework on time in advance of the relevant lesson.

I very much enjoy working with other people and passing on what I have learnt. I find it wonderful seeing people with that lightbulb moment when everything just clicks into place. I work in my local area of Plymouth and online. I have over ten year's main stream teaching experience in a classroom environment and eight years as a tutor/specialist. I've taught Music, English, Science, Maths, Art and Primary (KS 1 - 5). I`ve run my own department. As I'm also a musician I've taught guitar, cello, violin, keyboards and music theory. I use many different approaches to encourage development. I'm experienced in working with SEN. I`ve achieved excellent results with pupils with specific learning difficulties and behavioural problems. My experiences in this area are in Down syndrome, dyslexia dyspraxia, ADHD, Asperger's, ASD, verbal dyspraxia and sensory processing disorder. I've also taught pupils with cerebral palsy, deafness and visual acuity problems. I`ve completed a basic sign language course & RPM for ASD. I did this so I could communicate with pupils, without relying on a teaching assistant to translate for them/me.
Apart from classroom teaching and tutoring I've also been a curriculum coordinator for people with ASD. I specialize in helping clients with learning difficulties and disabilities (ASD, ADHD, Asperses, & dyslexia/dyspraxia). This role involved designing a unique syllabus/curriculum and managed a group of educators.

I like to understand a pupils strengths through looking at how they learn (Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic (VAK)). I take the information I learn and find the best way to adapt teaching/learning. I hold a MSc in Molecular Life Sciences from Université de Lausanne Switzerland and a BSc in Biology from Imperial College, specializing in Molecular Biology, Genetics and Neuroscience.
